Why isnt this site ranking?

I just took over for a site and noticed they have no presence for any keywords...not even low ranks.
Their backlink profile is not the best, but webmaster tools says they have no manual actions.
Thoughts on the matter?

Moz shows many of my other clients with local keywords like that. I see vonderhaar in the map listings but not organic results

It doesn't look like moz counts local results, but I still have moz pulling http://www.vonderhaar.com/ at 33rd for "Cincinatti Fireplace Cleaning" with http://www.vonderhaar.com/mantels.php.

I'm seeing them on the first page for both "Cincinnati chimney repair" and "Cincinnati chimney cleaning" which appear to be your 2 main keywords. These are both showing in the local pack.

The blog was hacked yesterday. All of those blog posts were up for less than an hour and promptly deleted. So I highly doubt they had any impact on the rank.
I 100% agree that this site is ugly and not well formatted. But the client is unwilling to change that or pay for a design. So we have to try to build a house on a bad foundation to begin.
Most pages have header tags
And while I see all of these things as issues, I am more concerned with why the site would rank and then suddenly disappear entirely. Backlinks are obviously a big thing, but it is a small local niche site where I can say that a large portion of the companies also do not have backlinks or even an seo company helping.
The site gets "A" grades on their moz on page reports for keyword targeting so I feel they should at least be somewhere to be found.

I'm guessing the site had the wrong permissions, and someone was ablt to get into it.Tons of links to beuy oreos and Jordan shoes. Many of these pages have a lot of unnatural links to questionable sites with exact anchor text.
Could be they dont have a manual action yet, but I wouldn't leave it this way. Check the folder that these posts are coming from, and delete it if possible. Set new permissions of 0644 and for coding files 0444 if it will still allow the site to load. Sometimes a 444 is too strict, and will not allow a user to access the site, depending upon your file setup.
Another thing I noticed is that none of the pages that arent spam are optimized well. Take the homepage for example:

vs a competitor's description:
American Chimney and Masonry offers chimney sweeping and chimney repair services to the greater Cincinnati Ohio area for over 30 years. A+ Rating by the BBB and over 85,000 customers
Bit more organized, a bit more direct.
Compare this site to a competitor. The site you are managing doesnt have any compelling reasons for a user to contact them:

Backlinks are also a large contributor to a site's ranking. If you say it has a poor or non-existant backlink profile, could be a large reason of why it doesn't rank.
NO HEADER TAGS:
seo-browser reportThis is how search engines see your site. Lack of header tags isnt good for users, as it doesnt separate your content, nor for SEO because it doesnt make the page summary evident and clear.

Looks like you may have been hacked at some point. Go to Google in incognito mode, and type site:vonderhaar.com and start going back a few pages. This page is an example of a blog page that is filled with spam http://www.vonderhaar.com/blog/kprsd40080f/. Looks like it might have just happened, as I see today's date on at least one of the posts.

SERP Ranking
Hi everyone, I'm struggling to figure out why our website has dramatically changed and is ranking far worse than ever. We were top for around 10 keywords, and had over 4 high traffic keywords in position 1. I think the website needs updating (as it's magento 1.7), and that the competition is increasing. Would changing the file name of an image (not the alt attribute) have an effect of on seo / ranking of that image and thus the site?
Would changing the file name of image, not the alt attribute nor the image itself (so it would be exactly the same but just a name change) have any effect on : a) A sites seo ranking b) the individual images seo ranking (although i guess if b) would be true it would have an effect on a) although potentially small.) This is the sort of change i would be thinking of making :  changed to

Why is my client's site not ranking anymore? Like big time!
Ok, I'm reaching out to all of you Moz'rs for some help with this one. My client's site has dropped off the face of google in a real short period of time. It went from page 1 (avg rank 3 to page 6 (avg rank 50) and below in the matter of 2 weeks. Here's some facts: 1. DA is a 22 and homepage PA is a 31. It outranks all other sites in its competitive set. 2. The homepage used to be the page that displays for keyword searches, now its the FAQ page, which has a lower PA of 23. Why has the home page seemingly vaporized? And, why is the FAQ showing as the first result? What should I start checking. I feel paralyzed, not sure where to start. More info: a. There are no alerts present in Webmaster Tools. b. For some reason the homepage (domain.com) was 301'd to domain.com/home.html. Domain.com is indexed by Google, however, domain.com/home.html is not. If this is the issue, what is the best way to handle it? Thanks in advance for your help!

Potential problems with my site
Dear Mozzers I hope you can help me with the following problems: My site is up and running for a year now and may be there has been problem with the homepage, because it ranks on first page for a competitive keyword on Google.com and Google.com.au only, however in other countries it just shows up as internal page and does not rank well. google.com/Google.com.au: homepage ranks top 10 (example.com)

Our quilting site was hit by Panda/Penguin...should we start a second "traffic" site?
I built a website for my wife who is a quilter called LearnHowToMakeQuilts.com. However, it has been hit by Panda or Penguin (I’m not quite sure) and am scared to tell her to go ahead and keep building the site up. She really wants to post on her blog on Learnhowtomakequilts.com, but I’m afraid it will be in vain for Google’s search engine. Yahoo and Bing still rank well. I don’t want her to produce good content that will never rank well if the whole site is penalized in some way. I’ve overly optimized in linking strongly to the keywords “how to make a quilt” for our main keyword, mainly to the home page and I think that is one of the main reasons we are incurring some kind of penalty. First main question: From looking at the attached Google Analytics image, does anyone know if it was Panda or Penguin that we were “hit” by? And, what can be done about it? (We originally wanted to build a nice content website, but were lured in by a get rich quick personality to rather make a “squeeze page” for the Home page and force all your people through that page to get to the really good content. Thus, our avenge time on site per person is terrible and Pages per Visit is low at: 1.2. We really want to try to improve it some day. She has a local business website, Customcarequilts.com that did not get hit. Second question: Should we start a second site rather than invest the time in trying to repair the damage from my bad link building and article marketing? We do need to keep the site up and running because it has her online quilting course for beginner quilters to learn how to quilt their first quilt. We host the videos through Amazon S3 and were selling at least one course every other day. But now that the Google drop has hit, we are lucky to sell one quilting course per month. So, if we start a second site we can use that to build as a big content site that we can use to introduce people to learnhowtomakequilts.com that has Martha’s quilting course. So, should we go ahead and start a new fresh site rather than to repair the damage done by my bad over optimizing? (We’ve already picked out a great website name that would work really well with her personal facebook page.) Or, here’s a second option, which is to use her local business website: customcarequilts.com. She created it in 2003 and has had it ever since. It is only PR 1. Would this be an option? Anyway I’m looking for guidance on whether we should pursue repairing the damage and whether we should start a second fresh site or use an existing site to create new content (for getting new quilters to eventually purchase her course). I have a general site for my insurance agency. Should I create niche sites too?
I work with several insurance agencies and I get this questions several times each month. Most agencies offer personal and business insurance and in a certain geographic location. I recommend creating a quality general agency site but would they have more success creating other nice sites as well? For example, a niche site about home insurance and one about auto insurance. What would your recommendation be?

Widespread Ranking Drops for Strong, White Hat sites
Hi Moz, A few of our sites experienced widespread ranking drops across all keywords this morning. Both of these are very strong sites with a high DA (56), moz rank and moz trust above 5. We haven't been doing any black hat SEO, creating spammy links, or paying for links. Is anyone else seeing anything similar or have any ideas as to what type of Algorithm update this might be? We currently rank 67th for our name.
