Very strange: META descriptions not showing
-
Hello,
Since Panda 4.0 has been launched, all of my optimized META description have been gone in Google.
A while ago, I posted a question about this problem here: http://moz.com/community/q/all-meta-descriptions-gone.I know about Google's own will to decide which META description will be shown. And also about unique content of the descriptions. All pages did have an optimized description before Panda 4.0 and there were no troubles at all, what tells me there is something else going on.
I tested some things:
- Rewrote 50 descriptions to very uinique ones, only five got indexed. This tells me that duplicate content of the descriptions is not the problem (they have never been 100% duplicate, product type was a variable which was always different for each page).
- Removed cache in GWT and fetched again as Google, didn't help. I checked the pages I tested and they all have been indexed again without showing the optimized descriptions.
More information:
- The first time I changed some META descriptions and fetched the pages again in GWT, Google picked up my new META descriptions and showed them. A few days later, most of them disappeared again (so Google is aware of the description but seems to ignore it).
- Some pages show the optimized description when I change my search query (only a few, mostly the optimized description never got shown)
- Technique is ok. Source code shows the right optimized description. META robots isn't blocking anything except NOODP/NOYDIR (always has blocked those).
- Websites using the exact same CMS, website template, META descriptions (style and build-up), do not have these problems
- I compared elements like place of description in source code, usage of meta robots, og:description, crawl-delay in robots.txt, and special characters in descriptions between websites that are showing optimized vs. website that don't show optimized descriptions. I can't find any connection.
Something I noticed is a change is my Robots.txt file: my webmaster has added the following command:
Crawl-delay: 2May this have to do with my problem? I guess it doens't.
I did some research and there are more websites that are suffering this problem beside mine. This tells me it must be Google (and so Panda 4.0) that is responsible for this change.
I realy want my optimized descriptions back. Does anybody have an idea what to do?
Thanks in advance.Marcel

So I am encountering the same problem as Marcel. My meta descriptions are similar to other pages, but not exact matches. There are variables in each description that change depending on the page you are viewing. My main issue with Marcel's solution is that I don't want to put the exact meta description in the content as it doesn't really flow with the layout/design/messaging. The meta desc works on the SERPs but as an actual part of the copy, it does not fit.
Any other suggestions? Could I put the meta desc. at the bottom of the page?
Would including NOODP do the trick?

Very pleased it helped Marcel

Here I am again. I tested 47 META descriptions by adding the exact description to the upper content of the page. Google has picked up 45 optimized descriptions. Problem solved, thanks again iNetSEO!

Hi Andy,
Thanks for your reply. I'm testing your advice. For five pages yesterday I added the exact META description to the upper content of the page. Then I fetched the pages in GWT as Google. Google has picked up the optimized META description now succesfully for four of five pages!
I am going to add more pages to this test.
Thanks, I will post the results of the new test in here.

Hi Marcel,
Google are doing this more and more and one thing I find does help, is to make sure the description is very closely targeted to the page in question. Don't have key words and phrases in the description, that don't appear in the page. This has been changed by Google because they don't consider it to be focussed enough or as on-topic as it could / should be.
As a matter of course, I would also block Google from going anywhere near your ODP listing by adding

Meta description issue on Google
Hello, I have a small issue on Google with our Meta Description tag not always being properly displayed. If you search for the term: Globe Car (in two words), everything is being displayed properly: http://screencast.com/t/YQCUkJnk Now do the same search for the term GlobeCar (in one word) and the meta tag set into our homepage seems to be totallly ignored and Google is now displaying something that is generated from out of their hat: http://screencast.com/t/K0KeeRGSgspV Anyone has an idea what would cause this? Thanks!

Meta Description Being Picked up from another site!?
Hi, when we search for a phrase (which is the most searched for phrase for our company) the meta description which is displayed isnt the one we set, and it hasnt picked it up from any text on the page. The description is incorrect, it says we have an office in a city that we dont, and it just isnt a very good description generally. What has been suggested to us by our website developers is that the description is being picked up by google from a website which lists companies details. The description which is displayed on that website, is the same as the description which is shown for our company in the search results. But is it possible for Google to ignore the meta description which is set in our homepage and the other text on the home page, and pickup the text from another website and use it as our description? Many Thanks

LSI keywords logic - enter in meta and bold in text?
Hello, In the lack of good info about this on the Internet, let me try here. I know that it is a good idea to put LSI keywords in natural flow in the body text of the article. But shall I also put LSI keywords as a meta? In the same manner as doing with non-LSI keywords? Or shall I only reserve meta for non-LSI keywords? In body text, shall I emphasize LSI keywords in bold? As non-LSI keywords already does. This is a bit confusing as I don't wan't LSI keywords to take over show from my long tail (phrase) keyword. I will appreciate if someone could share a bit light over this. Thanks in advance!

Implications of multiple page descriptions?
Are there any implications of using two page description properties, i.e. meta name="<a class="attribute-value">description</a>" and meta property="<a class="attribute-value">og:description</a>"

Advice on strange URL problem
I'm considering doing some pro bono work for a local non-profit and upon initial review they have a number of serious issues but there is one in particular I'd like to check my thinking on. The developer who set up the site some years ago implemented a javascript redirect on their root domain so that it redirects to: http://domain.com/wordpress This is wrong for all kinds of reasons and I want to recommend eliminating this redirect and getting rid of the 'wordpress' part of the path altogether. However, the site is quite established with good PR and they would take a hit by changing the path. I'd do 301 redirects to the new URLs that would not have 'wordpress' in the path in addition to other remediation. My question - is my thinking here good? It's worth it, right? The other option is just get rid of the weird redirect and keep 'wordpress' in the path but this seems unacceptable to me. Any opinions?

OSE - still showing me links are there when they are not?
Has anyone else had the issue for a couple of months now where ose is showing links that are live when they are not. I am doing seo for a big e-commerce website so it is important i can find out what the anchor text distribution is for the domain. How is this possible when ose shows me links which are not live? There's been 2 or 3 updates and still showing expired links in our back-link profile. This is very frustrating and has led me to see if anyone else can recommend an alternative which is more up to date? And yes before seomoz reply, i know you only update a certain percentage of the web.

How can i get the Authors photo to show in the Google search result?
I added the rel="author" tags to the blog posts last week and updated the authors page with a link to the Google+ account, but I have yet to see the authors photo surface in the Google Results. Example URL: http://spotlight.vitals.com/2011/10/dr-richelle-cooper-testifies-against-dr-conrad-murray-in-trial/ Can anyone identify what else needs to be done?
