Pleasing the Google Gods & Not DeIndexing my site.
-
Hey Mozzers,
So plenty of you who follow these threads have come across my posts and have read bits and pieces of the strange dark dark gray hat webspace that I have found myself in. So I'm currently doing some research and I wanted all of your opinion too.
- Will Google always notify you before they stop indexing your website?
- Will Google always allow you back if you do get pulled?
- Does Google give a grace period where they say "fix in 30 days?"?
What is every bodies experience with all of this?
-
No worries. I haven't labeled you as a blackhat. In fact, my apologies, but I didn't remember that I had answered a question for you previously.
So, your questions are mostly ones that can't be answered in a general sense. They'd require someone to know the intimate details of your penalty/algorithm demotion/technical on site issues/etc etc etc. There's no black and white answer to any of these questions.
Google doesn't often just completely deindex a site. Most penalties cause ranking demotions. If you get affected by an algorithm (ie Penguin for unnatural links) then your site won't rank well until the links are cleaned up AND Penguin refreshes again. But for algorithms your site won't get deindexed.
Google does not give warnings to say that you are going to be hit soon.
Google says that any site can recover from a penalty or algorithm change provided you fix the issues. But you've got to have good stuff there in order to recover. In other words, if you got a penalty or an algorithmic demotion because of unnatural links and once you've removed those links there are no natural ones there then don't expect recovery.
I've written some articles on Moz that probably answer your questions:

Thank you! I do value the criticism, that's how we learn!
I want to make it clear as possible that I am not engaging in anything Blackhat in anyway shape or form. If you look back at some of my older posts, for example the one that you and EGOL commented on, it begins to paint the picture that I am working with.
I am trying to remain vague to protect the company that I am working for, although realistically I'm not sure how much that matters.
So, as I have stated before, I am pretty new to SEO in the scheme of things (seriously for about 1 year). And I am new to this company (about a month). As you pointed out in the last paragraph I have no idea what I'm doing in this realm. I understand SEO theory, but the problem that I am running into, and probably part of that makes my questions appear blackhat, is that I am not even sure how to identify exactly what has been done with this website.
In the last post of mine that you commented on we discussed the various updates and how the may or may not have effected the website that I am working on. Now this post was aimed at trying to add to that data.
I told my boss that I thought we needed to pull the links and restructure the website architecture immediately because I did not want google to remove us from their Index on my shift. His response was:
What was put in place is working. We want to do a rebuild and redesign. All of that will happen, what I want to know is:
- When will google pull us from the index?
- Have we already been hit?
- Do they warn people if their website is going to be pulled.
- Can we come back from a hit?
- If we are pulled how quickly can we get back on google?
I will be following up shortly.

I can't tell from your posts whether you are just trying to remove black hat work from a site or whether you're actually engaging in black hat methods. I'm going to say some harsh stuff. I would say that if you have to ask these questions then you really should not be going down either road unless you are working on sites that you can afford to lose permanently. Also, in some cases if you get caught doing black hat stuff Google can take action on ALL of your sites.
I know a number of people who are really good at black hat methods. And a good number of these guys who have been gaming Google for years can either no longer do it or are finding that it is getting harder and harder.
I work with a lot of penalized sites and there are many different kinds of penalties. For some you get manual notification of the penalty in WMT (not a warning...just a notice that it's been penalized). For others there is no notification at all but the algorithms just stop trusting your site. While recovery can be possible, a good number of the sites that I consult over are completely toast because of past SEO efforts.
If you are trying to clean up a site that has been damaged by former SEO work and you are asking the questions that you have asked above, then you probably need a lot of help. I'd make it really clear to your boss that you are not experienced in penalty cleanup but that you're doing your best and to set expectations low.
You probably already know this, but still, I felt I should comment.

Thank you both.
I have inherited a website that is entangled in a very devious web of darkness. And the process of trying to expediently prune the links, dismantle the foundation, and eradicate the poor content while not drastically hurting us more is very difficult to put into words to my boss.
At the end of the day I just want to make it as clear as possible that if we get taken off Google on my watch, that I have given him all the information necessary to make an educated decision.

Consider a warning a pleasant courtesy from Google. They by no means do this on a consistent basis.
-
You can usually get back in, but the effort it takes to recover from being deindexed is demanding and probably not worth it for you naughty "dark dark grey" hat folk.
-
I agree with Irving: I've never encountered a friendly warning from Google before they destroyed all the things.

Google says they MAY send you a message in WMT
-
You need to make a reconsideration request, and if the site is found to be no longer in violation, they will allow your site to get indexed again
-
No, if you get banned it's usually because of something they feel is very serious like a site that is infected with a virus, of it violating some copyright laws. Banning is the worst thing that they can impose and when it happens it will just happen out of the blue because they don't want it in their index, so you'll get no grace period.

Active, Old Large site with SEO issues... Fix or Rebuild?
Looking for opinions and guidance here. Would sincerely appreciate help. I started a site long, long ago (1996 to be exact) focused on travel in the US. The site did very well in the search results up until panda as I built it off templates using public databases to fill in the blanks where I didn't have curated content. The site currently indexes around 310,000 pages. I haven't been actively working on the site for years and while user content has kept things somewhat current, I am jumping back into this site as it provides income for my parents (who are retired). My questions is this. Will it be easier to track through all my issues and repair, or rebuild as a new site so I can insure everything is in order with today's SEO? and bonus points for this answer ... how do you handle 301 redirects for thousands of incoming links 😕 Some info to help: CURRENTLY DA is in the low 40s some pages still rank on first page of SERPs (long-tail mainly) urls are dynamic (I have built multiple versions through the years and the last major overhaul was prior to CMS popularity for this size of site) domain is short (4 letters) but not really what I want at this point Lots of original content, but oddly that content has been copied by other sites through the years WHAT I WANT TO DO get into a CMS so that anyone can add/curate content without needing tech knowledge change to a more relevant domain (I have a different vision) remove old, boilerplate content, but keep original

Google Algorithm non-manual penalty. How do we fix this (quality?) drop?
Hi, See attached image. We received a non-manual penalty on March 22, 2015. I don't think we ever came out of it. We have moved up due to the Penguin update, but we should (by DA PA) be up on the first page for tons of stuff and most keyword are lower than their true strength. What kind of quality errors could be causing this? I assume it was a quality update. I am working on the errors, but don't see anything that would be so severe as to be penalized. What errors/quality problems am I looking for? We have tons of unique content. Good backlinks. Good design. Good user experience except for some products. Again, what am I looking for? Thanks. non-manual-penalty.png

Duplicate content - multiple sites hosted on same server with same IP address
We have three sites hosted on the same server with the same IP address. For SEO (to avoid duplicate content) reasons we need to redirect the IP address to the site - but there are three different sites. If we use the "rel canonical" code on the websites, these codes will be duplicates too, as the websites are mirrored versions of the sites with IP address, e.g. www.domainname.com/product-page and 23.34.45.99/product-page. What's the best ways to solve these duplicate content issues in this case? Many thanks!

Is one of my competitors trying to get my site penalized?
Hi guys, I have been ranking #2 for a popular search term for several months now, and today I noticed a drop to #5, so I went to check my backlink profile, and I'm seeing thousands of no-follow exact keyword matched backlinks, all from spammy looking websites. I looked at some of the links and they do link to me, but I didn't generate these links, and I have never paid anybody externally to build links for me. What is the best course of action for me here? link disavow tool?

Creating duplicate site for testing purpose. Can it hurt original site
Hello, We are soon going to upgrade the cms to latest version along with new functionlaities - the process may take anywhere from 4 week to 6 weeks. may suggest - we need to work on live server, what we have planned take exact replica of site and move to a test domain, but on live server Block Google, Bing, Yahoo - User-agent: Google Disallow: / , User-agent: Bing Disallow: / User-agent: Yahoo Disallow: / in robots.txt Will upgrade CMS and add functionality - will test the entire structure, check url using screaming frog or xenu and move on to configure the site on original domain The process upgradation and new tools may take 1 - 1.5 month.... Concern is that despite blocking Google, Bing & Yahoo through User agent disallow - can still the url can be crawled by the search engines - if yes - it may hurt the original site as will read on as entire duplicate or is there any alternate way around.. Many thanks

I think my site is affected by a Google glitch...or something
Although google told me No manual spam actions found i had not received an unnatural link request notice i figured it would be a good idea to clean these up so i did. So i have submitted 3 reconsideration requests from google. They all came back with the same response: No manual spam actions found. I really doubt that anyone at google really checked those out.You will notice that i don't even appear on page 1-10 at all...its clearly google filtering the site out from the results(except for my brand terms), but i have no idea what for. What do you guys think it is? If you see anythign let me know so i can have it fixed. This has been going on for 2 months now...my company has been around for a long time...i dont understand why suddenly im not showing up in searches for the keyword si used to rank for...

Is Google stupid?
Why does buying links still work? I don't mean approaching an individual webmaster and cutting a deal, that seems to be nearly impossible to detect. But the huge link brokers, like Text Link Ads, Build my Rank or Linkvine, Google has to be aware of them, right? Can't they just create accounts to see the whole network, and ban the sites? Why wouldn't they just do that?

Do backlinks with good anchor text from bad sites help?
Hi, In the Netherlands, the SEO competition for terms like loans is very competitive. I see a website in this industry that seems to be doing very well based on links with good anchor text from sites that seem quite worthless to me, such as: http://www.online-colleges-helper.com/ and http://www.alohapath.com/ My question is: is it worth pursuing this type of links? I assume these must be paid links, or am I wrong? I'd really rather not go down this route but I don't want to be outranked by someone who is using these types of links... Many thanks in advance for any type of insight! Annemieke
