Is an international redirect hurting my ranking
-
We're a small international company that redirects users based on their language identifier.
I've now taken a big interest in and also how it affects ranking. When I look at my MOZ dashboard the fundedbyme.com domain has a higher ranking than fundedbyme.com/en/ for example.
Our company wants to target other markets such as Spain and Germany, I am imposing penalties on myself by not having rel="canonical" in place and redirecting to the TLD?

If you use gLTDs as your sub-directories, you can then use WMT to set preferences.
See a further discussion here:

From my understanding (as a hosting provider not a SEO), is that increasingly signals coming from on-page or WMT are far more important that server location, IP or other hosting related information. This makes sense with more and more CDNs.
You may also want to see:
http://googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.com/2013/04/x-default-hreflang-for-international-pages.html
In terms of what to optimize that is up to you, but the important part is to give Google clues as to what pages you want ranked where/how.

Have you thought about rel=alternative instead?

Hi,
I've just answered a very similar issue in this Q&A.
While it is referring to GEO-location redirects I've heard of very similar issues with language redirects.
Take a look and let me know what you think.
Thanks

301 redirect Question
Hi all, I have a client who has a domain lets say www.xyz.de which is redirected 301 to www.zyx.de. Now they're working on a relaunch and they want to use the www.xyz.de as their origibnal doman after that. So, at the end the www.zyx.de - which is indexed by Google - should be redirected to www.xyz.de. It vice versa. So the redirect becomes the original and the original becomes the redirect 😕 Is there anything we have to care off? Or will that run into the hell? Thanx. Seb.

Internal 302s
I am noticing a lot of 302 status codes on my site. After inspecting the elements, I believe this is because a link on a certain page is 302ing to a secure page. So when it changes the URL from http to https its using 302. Is this something important to change and would I change this to 301s? There are thousands like this. Thanks much!!!

Malware ranking drops
Hi, One of our sites got hit with malware in November. We cleaned it up and sent a reconsideration request and no malware warnings are in WMT anymore. We still haven't seen an improvement in rankings even though people say it can take up to 90days? Organic traffic is down 40% and still dropping. Any advice? Thanks

Redirecting According to the occasion
We have loads of different departments that relate to specific occasions (e.g. Christmas, mothers day, father day etc), they all have good PR and inbound links etc and most of them rank well for the specific occasion. What I was thinking is that I could redirect all of the occasions that aren’t in use and send the traffic to the valid occasion live at the moment. So I would 301 all the Christmas pages to our valentine’s day main page. Then once valentines is gone I will redirect Christmas and valentines to the mothers day main page and so on. So this would be constantly switching as different occasions come along. Can you see any possible negative problems? Is there any chance that if I redirect Christmas for example, and then when Christmas comes we remove the redirect, could it harm the Christmas page?

Is this a safe 301 redirect?
We are moving our site from one platform to another. Currently on our site we have two homepages. "www.homepage.com" and "www.homepage.com/Index" Both pages have some high quality links pointing in on them. The problem: We are going to be doing a 301 redirect from "www.homepage.com/Index" page to "www.homepage.com" as we are moving platforms at this time we weren't going to create a "www.homepage.com/Index" page all. This leaves this page as an empty URL. With this webpage disappearing all together will we lose traction as we are redirecting an empty URL? Or is it better to recreate this "www.homepage.com/Index" on our new platform redirect it and wait for google to deIndex this page for us? As well is there a tutorial for how to implement 301 redirects or is this something worth looking for a developer and pay someone to do?
