Page Title Tag operands , - |

Hi,
Anyone have any good suggestions about using commas, hyphens, vertical bar in the title tag and how it affects rankings?
Thanks.

Thanks everyone for you giving me your viewpoint. I was particularly interested with MorganNw answer, but I have not found any data to support this (as much as it would have been great if it was like that!)

We've run out of indents in Q&A. Can you clarify which is your understanding of title tags? It's not clear which person you're responding to. Thanks!
-
This is exactly my understanding of title tags as well. From our own work, this is exactly how it works.
-
I'd love to know your source for that info.
What happens when the marketer does the following for the title and would there be any any difference between that and not using pipes?
3D | Printing | Video | Computer | Movies | Jail

Hi Morgan,
I'm familiar with using the pipe as an OR operator in some searches (also works on Craigslist now, thankfully), but I have not seen anything about it having any type of meaning to the search engines like that when used in a title tag. Could you share any references you have about how the search engines evaluate characters like this in a title tag, rather than a search query?
Thanks!
-
Also to make a comment, it seems that when you put a | at the end then but the brand name the search engines move that to the front in the title tag in the search engine results page.
-
Character width is now a consideration when deciding what to put in your title tags. Keep that in mind too. I think the pipe most likely consumes the least real estate.

Hi!
The pipe ( | ) is a search engine operator that tells the search algorithms that the phrases on either side are of equal importance. When a string of words in a tag is evaluated, the first word inherits the highest weight, the last word the lowest and the steps are determined by how many words are in the string. The pipe makes the first word after it the same weight as the first word. While a hyphen ( – ) connects the words in a title and the comma ( , ) separates phrases but does not restart the weighting process so words following a comma are not considered important.
That's the main reason why I would recommend the pipe ( | ) and also because I personally find it more user friendly and more readable. It separates better the sentences or keywords you are targeting in your page title.
Have fun

Neither make any difference for rankings, strictly from an SEO point of view.
This video way back in 2009 discusses as such and in my years of testing and looking around I've never seen a notable difference in which separator was used. Pipes (|) and Hypens (-) are the most common. I mention that because you should consider what separator you use for user experience and click through purposes.
You might want to test which version gets better click throughs - or trump for the one that you think looks the best (this might be influenced on your competitors for your keywords. If everyone is using pipes, you'd immediately stand out if you used hyphens). I don't buy into the fact that clickthrough rate (CTR) affects SEO rankings (although some do), but all things considered you will want to use separators that will help increase your CTR, and as a rule of thumb either pipes or hyphens will help you with that. Commas can often look clunky and dated in SERPs (although that's more of a personal opinion).
Hope this helps.

Duplicate Page getting indexed and not the main page!
Main Page: www.domain.com/service
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | Ishrat-Khan
Duplicate Page: www.domain.com/products-handler.php/?cat=service 1. My page was getting indexed properly in 2015 as: www.domain.com/service
2. Redesigning done in Aug 2016, a new URL pattern surfaced for my pages with parameter "products-handler"
3. One of my product landing pages had got 301-permanent redirected on the "products-handler" page
MAIN PAGE: www.domain.com/service GETTING REDIRECTED TO: www.domain.com/products-handler.php/?cat=service
4. This redirection was appearing until Nov 2016.
5. I took over the website in 2017, the main page was getting indexed and deindexed on and off.
6. This June it suddenly started showing an index of this page "domain.com/products-handler.php/?cat=service"
7. These "products-handler.php" pages were creating sitewide internal duplicacy, hence I blocked them in robots.
8. Then my page (Main Page: www.domain.com/service) got totally off the Google index Q1) What could be the possible reasons for the creation of these pages?
Q2) How can 301 get placed from main to duplicate URL?
Q3) When I have submitted my main URL multiple times in Search Console, why it doesn't get indexed?
Q4) How can I make Google understand that these URLs are not my preferred URLs?
Q5) How can I permanently remove these (products-handler.php) URLs? All the suggestions and discussions are welcome! Thanks in advance! 🙂0 -
May integrating my main category page in the index page improve my ranking of main category keyword?
90% of our sales are made with products in one of our product categories.
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | lcourse
A search for main category keyword returns our root domain index page in google, not the category page.
I was wondering whether integrating the complete main category directly in the index page of the root domain and this way including much more relevant content for this main category keyword may have a positive impact on our google ranking for the main category keyword. Any thoughts?1 -
One page ranking for all key words, when other targeted pages not ranking
Hi everyone I am fairly new to SEO but have a basic understanding. I have a page that has a lot of content on it (including brand names and product types and relevant info) ranking for a quite a few key words. This is cool, except that I have pages dedicated to each specific key word that are not ranking. The more specific page still has a lot of relevant text on it too. eg. TYRES page - Ranks first for "Tyres". Ranks okay for many tyre key words, including "truck tyres"
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | JDadd
TRUCK TYRES page - not ranking for "truck tyres" Further on, I then have pages not ranking all that well for more specific key words when they should. eg HONDA TRUCK TYRES - Then has a page full of product listings - no actual text. Not Ranking for "honda truck tyres". ABC HONDA TRUCK TYRE - not ranking for "abc honda truck tyre" key word
These pages don't have a lot of content on them, as essentially every single tyre is the same except for the name. But they do have text. So sometimes, these terms don't rank at all. And sometimes, the first TYRES page ranks for it. I have done the basic on page seo for all these pages (hopefully properly) including meta desc, meta titles, H1, H2, using key words in text, alt texting images where possible etc. According to MOZ they are optimised in the 90%. Link building is difficult as they are product listings, so other sites don't really link to these pages. Has anyone got ideas on why the top TYRES page might be so successful and out ranking more specific pages? Any ideas on how I can get the other pages ranking higher as they are more relevant to the search term? We are looking in to a website redesign/overhaul so any advice on how I can prevent this from happening on essentially a new site would be great too. Thanks!0 -
I have 2 keywords I want to target, should I make one page for both keywords or two separate pages?
My team sells sailboats and pontoon boats all over the country. So while they are both boats, the target market is two different types of people... I want to make a landing page for each state so if someone types in "Pontoon Boats for sale in Michigan" or "Pontoon boats for sale in Tennessee," my website will come up. But I also want to come up if someone is searching for sailboats for sale in Michigan or Tennessee (or any other state for that matter). So my question is, should I make 1 page for each state that targets both pontoon boats and sailboats (total of 50 landing pages), or should I make two pages for each state, one targeting pontoon boats and the other sailboats (total of 100 landing pages). My team has seen success targeting each state individually for a single keyword, but have not had a situation like this come up yet.

Putting "noindex" on a page that's in an iframe... what will that mean for the parent page?
If I've got a page that is being called in an iframe, on my homepage, and I don't want that called page to be indexed.... so I put a noindex tag on the called page (but not on the homepage) what might that mean for the homepage? Nothing? Will Google, Bing, Yahoo, or anyone else, potentially see that as a noindex tag on my homepage?

Optimize the category page or a content page?
Hi, We wish to start ranking on a specific keyword ("log house prices" in italian). We have two options on what pages we should optimize for this keyword: A long content page (1000+ words with images) Log houses category page, optimized for the keyword (we have 50+ houses on this page, together with a short price summary). I would think that we have better chances with ranking with option nr.2 , but then we can't use that page for ranking with a more short-tail keyword (like "log houses"). What would you suggest? Is there maybe a third option for this?

Why are Title Tags wrong in SERP
The title tag for this page is the following: "Best Mothers Day Gifts, Unique Mothers Day Gift Ideas | UncommonGoods" However, when you search Mothers Day Gifts UncommonGoods the title tags show up differently. What's up with this? Can I fix it? Is it a problem?
