Off-site company blog linking to company site or blog incorporated into the company site?
-
Kind of a SEO newbie, so be gentle. I'm a beginner content strategist at a small design firm. Currently, I'm working with a client on a website redesign. Their current website is a single page dud with a page authority of 5. The client has a word press blog with a solid URL name, a domain authority of 100 and page authority of 30. My question is this: would it be better for my client from an SEO perspective to:
- Re-skin their existing blog and link to the new company website with it, hopefully passing on some of its "Google Juice,"or...
- Create a new blog on their new website (and maybe do a 301 redirect from the old blog)?
- Or are there better options that I'm not thinking of?
Thanks for whatever help you can give a newbie. I just want to take good care of my client.

Thanks very much to all you for your thoughts. Very helpful indeed.

This is a great response an I love the advice about "over-thinking". Well said. Move on.
There are a great deal of wordpress self hosting options and themes out there should you chose to stay with wordpress. We chose Genesis from Studiopress and have been very satisfied. But there are many other great choices.
Best!

I would put the blog on the domain of the company.
Since the blog is on Wordpress.com, I would just move it even if it has little traffic. The PA 30 is generic wordpress.com blog PA. Nothing really important with that. Keeps things simple and you'll have more freedom. Overthinking this will just make things harder and since you are new, itll just make your learning curve longer.
Tell them what to do, don't give them options and hope they aren't sentimental for a wordpress.com blog. Move on and market their site. Boom!

If your clients DA is 100, it's probably hosted on a Wordpress subdomain (http://clientblog.wordpress.com/), right?
I would incorporate that blog into their existing site on their domain and work with WP to redirect if at all possible. In terms of theory, this is pretty easy to think about. Simply ask yourself (or your client)...
"If a potential customer is taking the time to read this piece of content you took X minutes/hours/days to write, where would you prefer they read it? On Wordpress.com, where they can easily find content on the same subject from 1000s of other writers? Or on your site, where they can learn more about only YOU and YOUR business?"
If they can't wrap their head around the virtual aspects of Wordpress.com vs. their own domain, give them a real world analogy.
- Compare Wordpress.com to them having a pop-up stand at a tradeshow for anything and everything available for sale in the world, then
- Compare their own domain to their physical brick and mortar store.
Where would they rather the potential customer engage with their brand? I think we can all come to an agreement on what the right choice is for that one.
I'm not saying it's a BAD IDEA to have a blog on Wordpress.com, but the content they write should probably be generalized about their industry and offer links back to their services where applicable. Their company-centric news and top content for generating traffic via SEO/inbound marketing should be hosted on their own domain.
Hope this helps.

We went through the same thought process and decided to self host a wordpress site and dump the wordpress.com (in our case) blog. There are many advantages of having the blog on your own site. You will be increasing the number of pages and adding fresh content. Google likes that and you can compete for more keywords. Also creating content in your blog that other people will link to because it is high quality will get you links naturally. I don't think it can be overstated as to how important this can be for SEO.
I can't really speak to whether or not the 301 is a good idea. In our case it wasn't possible anyway.
Hope this helps!

Malicious Link
Hello all, We're doing an adwords campaign, and Google has said that there is a malicious link on the website we're looking to advertise - so cannot launch the campaign. I've tried to go through Search Console (I am a novice BTW). And it says that "Domain properties are not supported at this time". Which I don't understand. Any advice please?!

301'd site, but new site is not getting picked up in google.
Hi I'm having big issues! Any help would be greatly appreciated This is the 3rd time this happened. Every time I switch my old site greatcleanjokes.com to the new design of chokeonajoke.com traffic goes almost completely down (I even tried out the new design on greatcleanjokes [to see if it was a 301 issue] and traffic also went down.) What can possibly be wrong with this new site that google just doesn't like it ?! I was ranking high up for many big phrase like joke of the day, corny jokes, clean jokes, short jokes. Now It's all gone. I also think it's strange that when I search for site:chokeonajoke.com the post pages show up before the category pages!? Here is the old site http://web.archive.org/web/20140406214615/http://www.greatcleanjokes.com/ Here is the new one http://chokeonajoke.com/ If you can't figure out anything do you know of anyone I can hire who may be able to figure it out?

Blog Location
We are planning on redesigning our homepage and are thinking of moving the location of our blog. Currently it is part of the main menu with a tab "Blog and News" Links to the top news article are also displayed below the fold. I checked with Google In-Page analytics and the news articles main link get 0.1% of the clicks and the blog&news don't get any clicks. The Marketing VP wants to move Blog&News to a link below the fold... which seems like it will send a message to Google we don't care about it and get it even less traction than we currently have in terms of visitors. Any suggestions of what we should do with it?

How to fix broken links?
Hi, I use WordPress CMS with Yoast SEO plugin. I have just found out that my 403 errors increased dramatically. It seems that all my tags below of each post are being broken for some reason. When i click on the tags i get the following massage: **403 Forbidden Request forbidden by administrative rules. ** I assume it has something to do with the configuration within Yoast SEO plugin. Dose anyone know how should i fix that? Thanks, Raviv evsGujA

Redirecting a old aged site to a new exact match site?
Hi All, I have a question. I have 2 sites with me in the same sector and want some help. site 1 is a old site started back in 2003 and has some amount of links to it and has a pr 3 with some good links to it but doesn't rank much for any keywords for the timing. site 2 is a aged domain but newly developed with unique content and has a good amount of exact match with a .com version. so will there be any benefit by redirecting site 1 to site 2 to get the seo benefits and a start for link bulding? or is it best to develop and work on each site? the sector is health insurance. Thanks

Should I create mini-sites with keyword rich domain names pointing to my main site?
Hi, I'm new to seomoz (and seo in general) and loving it so far. My main domain name is more of a brandname than a search engine friendly list of keywords. I rank well for some keywords I optimized for, and less so for the more competitive keywords. I was wondering if making one page minisites hosted on keyword rich domain names could help in this respect? What I want to do is just have a single page with a few paragraphs of content and links to the main site. I am not looking for links to boost the main site, just for the minisites to do better for several keywords. Will this help? Is this ok, or against some Google policy? Can this hurt the main site rankings? Thank you! **Edit: **I noticed that sites ranking above me on the first page for some keywords have much less on-page elements than my page, have about the same domain trust and also very little inbound links. The only factor I can see is the exact match of keywords in the domain name.
