Detailed ranking question for the pros
-
Hi Community,
We've been struggling with the search engine ranking of our SEO optimised homepage for a number of months. I'm going to provide an overview of the page stats in hope that somebody might have a suggestion as to what the problem might be or where we should be focusing our efforts. I have also provided the stats of our main competitor as I have no idea why they are ranking so high based on the stats provided:
URL in question: https://mysite.com
- On Page Grade for our targeted keyword: A
- Domain authority: 36
- Page authority: 45
- Root Doman Links: 57
- Total Links: 634
- SE Ranking: #17
Competitor URL in question: https://competitorsite.com
- On Page Grade for same targeted keyword: A
- Domain authority: 32
- Page authority: 43
- Root Doman Links: 28
- Total Links: 919
- SE Ranking: #1
Another strange this about our homepage is that a second tier page on our site is actually ranking higher in the search ranking for the Targeted Keyword (#9), even though this page has not been optimised and has an On Page Grade of F.
Does anybody have any suggestions of what we might be overlooking or what the issue here might be?

Thanks Netrepid - that might be a last resort in order to just boost up the internal page, but at this stage I'm trying to get to the bottom of why the homepage is ranking so poorly and why the internal page is ranking better. Once we understand what the issues here are then we can probably put together a better plan to optimise and fix both of the pages.

Hi Sheena,
I'd like to post a direct link but I've been told that it opens you up to getting a lot of contact from agencies/freelancers looking for new biz (not a bad thing though!). Also, I recognise that some competitors may have their eye on the forum so we'd just prefer to keep it private at this stage - at least until we figure out the issues!
Would it be OK if I PMed you with info in case you might be able to see any glaring issues on the site upfront?

Cheers AMHC,
I took a look at the trust flow and I see that our competitor does have a slightly higher trust flow than us. However, the trust flow of our internal page (which ranks higher than our homepage) is 17 whereas our homepage is 23. Taking into the fact that the On Page Grade and the back link profile for our internal page is much lower than the homepage, it's really confusing as to why it might be ranking higher. Any other thoughts on that?
-
I say optimize the internal page to an 'A', put a keyword rich text link from the homepage to that internal page in content, and get some co-citations for either your homepage or your internal page to match the link profile of that top ranking page.
And when that's done, add a reciprocal link from that internal page back to the homepage and see if you can get that bumped up in the SERPs, too.
Might work, might not. But it's worth a shot.

Sheena is spot on. Google has over 200 ranking factors. A tool that I like is Majestic SEO and it's trust flow metric. Quite often, when I can't figure our why a site is outranking us, they have a higher TF than we do. I rely on Moz's DA/PA and Majestic's CF/TF, and they are usually pretty accurate when used together.
Here's one other factor - DA/PA/CF/TF needs to be taken with a grain of salt. Majestic and Moz have their own Bots, and don't crawl and index nearly as thoroughly as Google does, and they also crawl more slowly. I've seen some studies that show that Majestic and Moz only pick up 1/3 of your actual backlinks. If your competitor has some awesome links that were missed by Moz and Majestic missed, this could also be the answer.

There are a thousand possibilities as to why they're outranking your site. I know everyone tries to keep their sites private in here, but for such a specific inquiry, we really need to see the pages in question. Kind of a 'help us help you' situation.

Ranking going down and down and disappears.
I asked a question a few weeks ago about a main keyword that we are targeting that is fluctuating up and down. The keyword is "trash bags" and that is what my company sells. All different colors, thicknesses and sizes. This isn't just a random keyword we are trying to optimize for, this is our business. Before I started optimizing the website for "trash bags" we used the term "garbage bags", now that we started we have been off the charts and on the charts, but we have never regained rankings. The trend finally looked like it was going upwards... but now I see I dropped off of google again. Is this normal? Should I be worried that google is penalizing me for this keyword (There is many links that have trash bags in the anchor text - but we do sell that!)? Here is a screenshot of our ranking history for trash bags: https://www.diigo.com/item/image/3vpdp/no01

Question about Robot.txt
I just started my own e-commerce website and I hosted it to one of the popular e-commerce platform Pinnacle Cart. It has a lot of functions like, page sorting, mobile website, etc. After adjusting the URL parameters in Google webmaster last 3 weeks ago, I still get the same duplicate errors on meta titles and descriptions based from Google Crawl and SEOMOZ crawl. I am not sure if I made a mistake of choosing pinnacle cart because it is not that flexible in terms of editing the core website pages. There is now way to adjust the canonical, to insert robot.txt on every pages etc. however it has a function to submit just one page of robot.txt. and edit the .htcaccess. The website pages is in PHP format. For example this URL: www.mycompany.com has a duplicate title and description with www.mycompany.com/site-map.html (there is no way of editing the title and description of my sitemap) Another error is www.mycompany.com has a duplicate title and description with http://www.mycompany.com/brands?url=brands Is it possible to exclude those website with "url=" and my "sitemap.html" in the robot.txt? or the URL parameters from Google is enough and it just takes a lot of time. Can somebody help me on the format of Robot.txt. Please? thanks

Event Landing Pages not ranking
Hi there I need to optimize the website of a club/concert venue. The site isn't bad and has authority, but the event pages don't seem to rank and I'm unsure about the reason. There is an overview page of the events: http://www.kaufleuten.ch/events/ What happens currently when clicking on a specific event (on "WEITER", top right of each event) is that users get redirected to a hashtag page by jQuery. The href of "WEITER" itself links to another landing page (which is IMO the one we should see ranking for the specific event). Here is a concrete example: Look at the event "Tanz & Konzert: Andreas Vollenweider, Seven & ROKPA-KIDS" on /events by clicking on "WEITER", you get directed to http://www.kaufleuten.ch/events/#2790/andreas-vollenweider the actual "WEITER" link in the source code though, points to the landing page http://www.kaufleuten.ch/event/andreas-vollenweider/ This seems to be done by an AJAX load: jQuery loads a DIV with the ID "ajax-content". Apparently, this is the code responsible for it: $(„.link“, click(function() {
Technical SEO | | zeepartner
el.find('.wrapper').load(target+' #ajax-content', function() {
});
return false;
}); I know the site has good authority and should rank well. however, the event landing pages never seem to appear, but only the page /events is ranking: SERP
(Strangely, when using the site command, the event page suddenly appears above: SERP. (But I have never seen this in a "normal search query", even though we are the organisers and should at least be among the top 5). Now my question: Does Google consider this AJAX load to be some sort of cloaking? (because the href in the code is different to you actually end up by clicking "WEITER"). Will the landing pages begin to rank if we disable this AJAX load? Or should we stick to hashtags and not even create landing pages? (but then, we will have no control over title tags of specific events, right?) Thanks for your help, I'm a bit lost here as my JS knowledge is meagre... Cheers,

Keyword ranking not moving
Hello, We have a very important keyword for our website (www.decorplanet.com) that hasn't moved in any direction in over a year. The keyword is "bathroom vanities". Our current SEO company has told us that the previous company has "over- optimized/linked" for this particular keyword and now Google is penalizing us for this. They told us that we need to leave it alone for a while and concentrate on other keywords and this one should naturally come back up (I should mention that at some point, we were much higher than where we are right now for that particular keyword). Many of our other high-profile keywords have been moving nicely to the first page. Keywords like "modern bathroom vanities", "antique bathroom vanities", "contemporary bathroom vanities", but the one that we really want ("bathroom vanities") hasn't budged at all. Does anyone have any thoughts on this. Is it possible that Google put us in some sort of a "sand-box" - I mean we are on page 2 so it doesn't sound like that's the case. It's just very bizarre that we can't seem to do anything with this keyword. Really appreciate any thoughts or input on this.
