How is best to use Permalinks for Wordpress /category/postname or /postname
-
Hello ,
I have a question Regarding the Permalink structure form Wordpress ,I am trying to figure out what would be the best structure of the blog post link ,for the moment I am using the structure example.com/postname and I changed the structure to example.com/category/postname ,redirected with 301 the old links to the new links and I thought about it and wanted to ask ,
I would really appreciate if you could tell me what is best form SEO point of view to do.
Regards,

In the short-term, even using 301 redirects may have a slight negative effect on the weight of your links, but in the long-term, they shouldn't be affected by it really.

If it's a very tight niche with similar or related categories, Id just go with a post name. It's cleaner and easier to promote.
I go the category route if it's a different set of products/topics or ecommerce site.
Both works

The juice flowing to your posts from your frontpage will still be the same, but if you have post that have external links pointing to them you wanna make sure that you are using 301's to direct the traffic to the new path.
And just because your post urls are example.com/category/postname doesnt send them any less value then you link from you frontpage. The juice till not go to the category it would still go to the post. But the stucture is more clear to people and search engines

Thank you for your answer ,but for example i have posts looking like this example.com/postname and they have some weight connected to the home page, after i reconfigure the permalink into example.com/category/postname ,would i lose all the weight from the post ?and will transfer the weight of the post to the category ? right now the juice will go directly to the website example.com ,but after i introduce the category for every post the juice will go to the category and my website will get lower in juice, weight, like right now i have on homepage DA 25 and PA 36,But after this modification do you think will remain the same ? i doubt it

I have to Agree with Lumina and I would like to add:
When you are using a url string like this:
It makes it easier to track what categories that are doing best on your site in analytics or other tracking software you might be using. As well as it tells the user what topic the post is all about.
In My opinion the example.com/category/postname is the best practice and it also helps defining how you site is structured.

I would say that example.com/category/postname is the better way to go. It's good for SEO and, as an example. many popular (and even marketing-specific blogs like Hubspot) use categories before a post name in their URLs.
The only real downside is that the URLs themselves will be longer. Though, unless you expect posts to end up on SERPs. that shouldn't matter too much. Another thing to consider is: if some of your posts would fall under multiple categories, then you'll have to choose between them each time. Again, not a huge issue, but one to consider.

Hi all, I'm trying to breakdown some SEO 101 tips and start from scratch. Starting with Keywords! I would like to audit our site for main keywords, grouping them in categories and subcategories. My questions are: 1. Is it possible to see where we rank on google AND search trends of visits to our site?

Software to indicate search volumes/trends
Is there any software that exists to help provide an indication of the search volumes or trends behind keywords? Currently we use google trends for a YOY and WOW view for some select KW's but the reality is are search volumes are effected by 1,000's of KW's and trying to get an accurate view of overall trends and theme with our product sector is difficult. I'm interested to find out if there is software which is an alternative to google trends or if there is 3rd party software available that lets us process google trends data in bulk?

Panda / Penguin Behavior ? Recovery?
Our site took a major fall on March 23rd, ie Panda 3.4 and then another smaller one on April 24th, ie Penguin. I have posted a few times in here trying get help on what items to focus on. Been doing this for 13 years, white hat, never chased algos but of course learned as I went. As soon as the fall hit one expert said it was links, which I kinda doubted because we never went after them but we have some but only a handful in comparison to really good authorative links. I concentrated on cleaning up duplicate content due to tags in a blog that only had 7 posts (an add on section to the site) then focuses efforts on just going through and making content better. Had other overlapping content that I would guess would pass inspection but I cleaned it up. After 6 weeks no movement back up, another expert here said yes, he saw some bad links so I should check it out. So back to focusing on links, I actually run a report and discover questionable links, and successfully get about 25 removed. Low numbers but we have only about 50 that were questionable. No contact info on the other directories so I guess we are stuck. Here is where I just go in circles... When our site fell on March 23rd we had 13 of our main pages still ranking at number 1 and 2 on each keyword phrase. Penguin hit and they fell about 10 spots. EXCEPT, one... This one keyword phrase and page stayed on top and ranked at #1 throught he storm. (finally fell to #4 but still remains up there). The whole site is down 90%, we only have 3 fair keyword phrases really ranking out of 250. The mystery is that the keyword phrase that was ranking was the one that supposedly had way over the % of anchor text, 7% of our links go to that page. The other pages that fell on Penguin had no pages linking back. I have been adding blog posts to our site, I post one an in a few days it gets indexed, have one of those ranking at #2 for the keyword, moved up from #4 a week after posting it in the blog. (google searches shows 80K) Just seems like the site should bounce back if new content is able to rank, why not the old? Did other people hit by Panda and Penguin see a sitewide fall or are they still ranking for some terms? I would love to see some discusson on success stories of bouncing back after Panda and Penguin. I see the WP success story but that was pretty sudden after it was brought to Google's attention. Looking for that small business that fixed something and saw improvement. Give me hope here please.

Does the use of an underscore in filenames adversely affect SEO
We have had a page which until recently was ranked first or second by Google UK and also worldwide for the term "Snowbee". It is now no longer in the top 50. I ran a page optimization report on the url and had a very good score. The only criticism was that I had used an atypical character in the url. The only unusual character was an underscore "_" We use the underscore in most file names without apparent problems with search engines. In fact they are automatically created in html files by our ecommerce software, and other pages do not seem to have been so adversely affected. Should we discontinue this practice? It will be difficult but I'm sure we can overcome this if this is the reason why Google has marked us down. I attach images of the SEO Report pages 8fDPi.jpg AdLIn.jpg

Was I Kicked Off Google Page One by Panda/Farmer?
Took over this site in March. Got a Panicked call from client Mid-March that all of a sudden keywords that put the site on Page One weren't working. There are still 9 that work, but apparently there were more. A large percentage of the backlinks are from Article Directories and Link Farms. Is this my problem? Also, a large percentage of the 149 pages suffer from keyword stuffing and were obviously written for Search Engines and not people. How much of a difference does that make?
