Putting A Blog On A Sub-Domain The Right Thing To Do?
-
Going to setup a blog for a 4 year old ecommerce website and was wondering if it would be a good idea to put a blog on the sub domain or just a folder like www.domain.com.au/blog
I'll be using the blog to
- Link bait articles
- Social bookmark traffic
- Linking keywords to products on the ecommerce site.
I wanted to know if
- The link juice would be greater if we cross link from sub-domain to main domain?
- Any major dis-advantages in having it on a sub-domain vs folder?
- Any other major differences?
Cheers!
-
Thanks guys, I totally forgot seomoz has it on a sub folder!
-
I suggest to go with the sub-folder option for simple reason - blog is the place for high quality content. It's better to have it within the sub-folder as it will attract links and will be delivered in the search results. It will help in building / promoting your website.
Having blog on a sub-domain or separate domain will require extra marketing efforts on your part.

"99.9% of the time, if a subfolder will work, it's the best choice for all parties." (http://www.seomoz.org/blog/subdomains-subfolders-and-toplevel-domains).
Even though this is a post made in 2006, I don't know of any relevant changes that would alter this advice.

Does having a different sub domain for your Landing Page and Blog affect your overall SEO benefits and Ranking?
We have a domain www.spintadigital.com that is hosted with dreamhost and we also have a seperate subdomain blog.spintadigital.com which is hosted in the Ghost platform and we are also using Unbounce landing pages with the sub domain get.spintadigital.com. I wanted to know whether having subdomain like this would affect the traffic metric and ineffect affect the SEO and Rankings of our site. I think it does not affect the increase in domain authority, but in places like similar web i get different traffic metrics for the different domains. As far as i can see in many of the metrics these are considered as seperate websites. We are currently concentrating more on our blogs and wanted to make sure that it does help in the overall domain. We do not have the bandwidth to promote three different websites, and hence need the community's help to understand what is the best option to take this forward.

Is it safe to 301 redirect old domain to new domain after a manual unnatural links penalty?
I have recently taken on a client that has been manually penalised for spammy link building by two previous SEOs. Having just read this excellent discussion, http://www.seomoz.org/blog/lifting-a-manual-penalty-given-by-google-personal-experience I am weighing up the odds of whether it's better to cut losses and recommend moving domains. I had thought under these circumstances it was important not to 301 the old domain to the new domain but the author (Lewis Sellers) comments on 3/4/13 that he is aware of forwards having been implemented without transferring the penalty to the new domain. http://www.seomoz.org/blog/lifting-a-manual-penalty-given-by-google-personal-experience#jtc216689 Is it safe to 301? What's the latest thinking?

The right way for review count?
Hi, I have a question that kinda bothers me for a while now and would love to hear you guys thoughts on this matter. One of the categories in my websites is services reviews, for example:
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | Ouzan
http://www.websiteplanet.com/review/questionform/ Recently we upgraded the site and gave users the option to write their own review as well. Now as you can see, the way it works is that we write a very big and informative/professional review ourself and in addition we give users the option to write their own reviews and share their experience with the service. Now My question is:
There is the itemprop-review count thingy, now we did it so if 0 users wrote a review it will show 0 reviews on the count.
Is it correct? (Feel free to check the site code yourself)
Or is it wrong? because their is actually 1 review (our editors review) I hope I explained my self well...
If not, please let me know what is unclear. Thanks!0 -
Is a .co.uk domain better?
Hi I have www.example.net however trying to judge if it is better having www.example**.**co.uk instead (as it will be targeted for UK people). I could use Webmaster tool to geographically target UK - however perhaps best to use a .co.uk domain instead. Any views on using a .net ending domain? Many thanks Nigel
