Hyphenating a Domain Name - What would you do?
-
So I have some chums setting up their own digital outfit.
When discussing SEO, naturally domain names came into play. They were looking at 'Gray Digital'. So, initially they jumped to the conclusion that they ought to buy 'graydigital.com' and the .co.uk variant.
But a best practice post: http://moz.com/learn/seo/domain - Leads me to think that 'gray-digital.com' may be the better option as far as readability is concerned?
Then of course you start thinking - 'should we just make it 'Gray-Digital-Marketing.com' instead?'
From your experience, what would you ladies and gents do?
Kind regards,
John.
(EDIT: Having read more around the subject I realise more than one dash is a bad idea. So instead would you bother with the singular hyphen?)

Agree with Ryan Purkey's recommendation.
Domain names are treated differently than most text probably because of space constraints. You don't need to worry about separating words. You want to keep your domain name short and memorable. As Ryan says, having to say "Gray DASH or Hyphen Digital) is not memorable.
Go with graydigital if it's available.

Stick with graydigital.com. You don't want to be saying, "Gray DASH or Hyphen Digital (but not underscore!)" when talking about your website. Plus, the words separate nicely visually by having the y and d juxtaposed. With any sort of link profile, content on site, and webmaster registration Google will know fairly quickly that Gray Digital Marketing and graydigital.com are the same thing.

Hyphens and underscores vs hyphens and double hyphens
Hello. I am thinking of changing the hyphens to underscores. The problem is that i have a magento extension for improved navigation and if you choose to use hyphens for special characters it will not let you choose this also for separating attributes. It will allow you only bouble hyphen. So when i go to sub-category https://www.shoponline.gr/peripoihsh/somatos/kremes-somatos/ and filter two brands (victoria's secret and frais monde) it returns the url https://www.ishoponline.gr/peripoihsh/somatos/kremes-somatos/victoria-s-secret--frais-monde instead of the iniital url with undescore which was https://www.ishoponline.gr/peripoihsh/somatos/kremes-somatos/victoria_s_secret-frais_monde. So it is "victoria-s-secret--frais-monde" vs "victoria_s_secret-frais_monde". Any suggestions? Thank you in advance.

Is repurposing an old sub domain better than creating a new sub domain?
We have a good sub domain like** art.ourwebsite.com** which currently sells custom canvas art. We have owned the domain since 2013 but it has only been live for the past few weeks. We want to redesign & repurpose the page to continue to sell custom canvas art but will eventually include other merchandise like mugs, tshirts, etc which wouldn't be custom. Would it be best to keep art.ourwebsite.com since is a shorter/more memorible & older sub domain or would it be best to update the name to something that encompasses our new products? Our marketing team has suggested yourart.ourwebsite.com

Does the domain extension effect domain authority and ranking
We have produces a website on a .company domain extension. We have produced a good sized website with unique content. However the DA remains at 1. There are no high priority issues in the page crawl. We suspect that the domain extension may be causing a lower DA. Is this a ranking factor?

How to redirect old domain to new domain.
We just recently signed up to Moz with hopes of fixing our Moz Ranking. We have an old domain - http://at-net.net and a new domain - https://www.expertip.net We have set up 301 (Permanent) redirects from all pages on the old site to the new, but aren't getting the ranking or aren't getting recognized from external links to the old sites. I've read the moz article on 'Link Juice' and followed those practices, but it doesn't seem to help. Does anyone have advice on doing this? Thanks in advance,

Multiple domain SEO strategy
Hi Mozzers I'm an AM at a web dev. We're building a new site for a client who sells paint to different markets: Paint for boats Paint for construction industry Paint for, well you get the idea! Would we be better off setting up separate domains - boatpaintxxx.com, housepaintxxx.com, etc - and treat each as a searate microsites for standalone SEO activity or have them as individual pages/sub doms from a single domain - paints4all.com or something? From what i've read today, including the excellent Beginners Guide - I'm guessing there's no definitive answer! Feedback appreciated! Thanks.

Sitemap with References to Second Domain
I have just discovered a client site that is serving content from a single database into two separate domains and has created xml sitemaps which contain references to both domains in an attempt to avoid being tagged for duplicate content. I always thought that a sitemap was intended to show the files inside a single domain and the idea of multiple domains in the sitemap had never occurred to me... The sites are both very large storefronts and one of them (the larger of the two) has recently seen a 50% drop in search traffic and loss of some 600 search terms from top 50 positions in Google. My first instinct is that the sitemaps should be altered to only show files within each domain, but am worried about causing further loss of traffic. Is it possible that the inclusion URLs for the second domain in the sitemap may in fact be signalling duplicate content to Search Engines? Does anyone have a definitive view of whether these sitemaps are good, bad or irrelevant?
