How to Interpret results in OSE?
-
I have been comparing my results with my main competitor
It seems as if I have the green check marks for everything except internal links.
Page authority, domain authority, rank, trust and external links are all better for my website
The competing website has only 6 external links compared to my 130
The on page grader gives me an A grade for all my keywords, and gives anything from an F to a B to my competitors site.
The only thing that is different is internal links,
Their page has 438 internal links and 39,000 - 41000 internal links in the other sections
and of course the total number of links is 41000+
They are number one and I am number 5
Analysing their top pages, I discover that they only have a limited number of actual content pages on their website. over 400 of the 438 internal links, are formed from some sort of internal search engine, that produces pages that say "No results found" for hundreds of almost related keywords but there is no content pages relating to those keywords.
So my questions are:
-
Is that a legitimate SEO strategy, that Google approves of. I'm guessing not. If it is I have found out how he does it, and would consider it, If I thought Google would not penalise me for it.
-
What other strategy, can I take to combat it, my answers are slowly creating content pages and manually building links until I eventually overtake them.
-
If it is a dodgy strategy, why isn't Google on top of this?
and finally 4) Are page authority, domain authority, rank, trust, and external links really not as important as internal links or total links.
Sorry for the long question but I would really appreciate any input on this
Thank you
Mike Collins

You're in the clear using a Google custom search box because Google is the one delivering the results so they know not to double up on those. You're right that the pages that are getting indexed in Google on the other site are from a different process and an attempt to trick the engine with sparse, dynamically generated content.
Hint? Huh? I'm not nearly that clever. Cheers!

Thanks for the great answer
but I just need to clarify something
I did find a custom search box within Google webmaster tools and placed it on the home page
I am assuming that this is not the same thing, mainly because it comes from Google and there are not four hundred actual pages created that say no results found. Also I have suggested search terms to help users find the content they are interested in, (and to help them find the content I want them to find. so I think it will help users to navigate the site.
I don't think that you are referring to this but I guess I should check, in case I need to take it down
Also I would ask if you left the reporting link as a hint, as to something i should act on myself?
Thanks your your help

Hi Mike. Regarding your questions...
- No, having Google index your site's search results pages is contrary to their guidelines, specifically, "Use robots.txt to prevent crawling of search results pages or other auto-generated pages that don't add much value for users coming from search engines." From: https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/35769. If you did it, you'd run the risk of having your site reported as webspam here: http://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/spamreport.
- Plenty of other strategies could help your site. You might also find ways to increase your links internally by a healthy amount; you can link out to highly reputable sites pertaining to your pages; you can get social signals referencing your pages; and on and on. Lots you can do!
- The Internet is kind of big. This specific site, and these specific results are like a few blips in the trillions of other signals Google handles.
It sounds like you're working on your site the right way. Focus on being a better user experience like you are and even if you're getting a few less visits by ranking a little lower than your competitor currently you're still going to have much better results. Cheers!

Weather providers in search results - any idea how to become one?
Hi, as google are displaying more and more weather forecasts within results, we'd like to explore whether there's a possibility of exposing our api to google to allow them to use us as one of the providers for the data. At the moment it appears they use weather.com, weather underground and maybe also accuweather (although I've not seen them mentioned for a while on there), but I'm not sure if this is some sort of commercial agreement, or whether it's simply that google have been given access to the api's from those providers in return for the link in the weather panel in the search results. Does anyone have any information about this sort of thing (I assume weather isn't unique in this respect), or know of any way to contact google and find out at all please? Thanks

Search Results Issues
Hi All, I am having an issue with https://www.toyotaofwilmington.com/ If you do searches using Ad Preview for “2016 Toyota Camry in Wilmington, NC” or “2016 Toyota Corolla in Wilmington, NC” we are having issues with the website not showing up organically. We have the location set to Wilmington, NC, but their competition which is located in Jacksonville, NC which is over an hour away shows up organically on the first page. I am wondering if there are any obvious reasons as to why this would happen, or if there is something bigger I need to look at? Thank you, Cyrus

Why does Intelligent Personal Assistant (IPA) gives different results than a Google search for a very similar or identical query?
My client Dr. Harris ranks #1 in SERPs and Local results for many terms, including "hair transplant surgeon Denver" However, when I did a voice search w Siri ""find me a hair transplant surgeon in Denver" Siri said she could find no results. A similar search for a clinic returned 2 competitors, but not my client. How do I ensure we are served up in voice queries? This surgeon deserves it, he invented most of the technology in use in the world today.

Why do SMB owners want more calls as a result of SEO, but don't answer 62% of them?
Working mostly with SMBs for 8 years now, we have gradually developed the notion that small business owners are hard to reach by phone. Our Customer Service agents spend hours unsuccessfully trying to reach business owners. If a potential customer calls the business, they'll have to face the same outcome. This means missed opportunities for both parties. Needless to say, one of the most important KPIs in local SEO is the number of generated phone calls...but no one's there to answer. We wanted to dig deeper into the matter, so we did a small study with 85 businesses. Results show that: 37.8% of calls are answered by a person. 37.8% of calls are answered by an answering machine, where no actual conversation (nor conversion) is possible, so we treat these calls as unanswered. 24.3% of calls are unanswered. We also gathered a list of possible solutions to the problem, but what we really need to know is WHY do business owners neglect such an important part of their business? And what resolutions can you think of?

Local Search - Google Mobile Results (Web&App)
Hi, I have a client with multiple locations. One of the locations manager is searching for branded and non-branded keywords on his mobile phone and not able to locate the business (within the parking lot of the location). Our ranking reports via a local search platform and manual checks indicate the location is actually ranking well. and we're seeing progress in GA. Has anyone deal with something like this before? This is a location that recently opened to the public. The concern is around mobile web and app results. I'm looking for some guidance around how to approach the situation. I'm sorry I cannot provide more details on the client.

Any Notable Change in Google's Location Based Results?
I've noticed with many of our clients that when searching for general terms, with obvious local intent, that Google assumes you are in the nearest metro area rather than the specific locality. Anyone else noticed this? Example: I have an HVAC client who has ranked a solid #1 for "HVAC Repairs" since January - if the user was in the small town we were targeting (Wake Forest) since January. However, now Google assumes users in this town are in the nearby metro area (Raleigh), and displays local and organic results for Raleigh instead of Wake Forest. I first noticed this change in mid-May. From what I've read about the Nov Hummingbird update, I don't see that playing a direct role. Any insight?
