Adwords structure issue
-
Background: We manufacture and sell our own products to the UK and English speaking world. We rank well for major terms but there is lots more traffic to be had with PPC so we've always used Adwords
At present I target keywords in 3 ways.
1. I have an [exact match] campaign that I use to target terms like [acme widget]
2. I have a broad match campaign that I use to target keyword targets I have identified through research like +blue +acme +widget.
3. I have an even broader campaign that I use to target the very long tail terms that it would be too time consuming to create groups and ads for like +camo +rocket +acme +widget
The problem: My 3rd category won't show! I use varied bids to make sure the more relevant ads show where they overlap (eg 2nd campaign bid is 50% of 1st campaign, 3rd campaign bid is 50% of 2nd) but 3rd campaign wont show for long tail searches when I test it with the random crap that people search for! I get the error message...
Your ad isn't being displayed for this keyword because there may be other ads within your account that are ranked higher and have similar keywords.
2 questions I suppose, is my structure acceptable and if it should work why isn't it?! Thanks so much all!
Matthew

Here is a good article on bid stacking in Adwords that might help you adjust your strategy.

3rd campaign is actually by super broad one so would use the terms +acme +widget. The example I gave was of what I would NOT have time to do, my fault; confusing!
I use separate campaigns so I can see at a glance differing conversion rates and data etc.
Oddly it does appear to be working now. My 3rd super broad campaign appears to be hoovering up traffic the two more focussed ones are missing. Strangely this is at higher CTR's than both of them. Go figure!

Hi Mat,
I don't think it is good idea to create three separate campaign for each match type. IMO best practice would be create separate Ad group for each match type in your case.
Second thing there is no use to create separate campaign/ Ad group for like +camo +rocket +acme +widget because I don't think modified broad match type having four words will give significant traffic. As far as I know modified broad match type shouldn't have more than three words.
As far as your current structure is concern technically there is no issue but practically you should create three separate ad group rather than three campaigns for each type.
*** You can add 'camo' as negative keyword in second campaign to remove the error "Your ad isn't being displayed for this keyword because there may be other ads within your account that are ranked higher and have similar keywords."

Hi Matthew,
Sounds like your ads are competing with each other. It's often called internal competition. Logically, those keywords on your third example can also trigger ads from your second example. It will usually tend to choose the ad performing better but can also show your other ad occasionally.
You can use negative keywords at Ad Group level to prevent this from happening while keeping your current structure. So, for example, on your 2nd category you can add as negative keywords the words: camo and rocket.
Hope this helps.
Cheers.

When to switch off AdWords ads in your channel mix?
My question is actually Inspired by that very good article: https://moz.com/blog/google-organic-clicks-shifting-to-paid that I read this morning. Present situation: For a specific and valuable non-branded keyword combination (2-3 words) we rank: Google Adwords: position 1 Local Pack (with maps): position 1 Organic Search: position 3-5, lately more 5-6 Question?: Is it still worth having AdWords ads or not there? How to evaluate if we could do without AdWords? Any algorithm, experiment, thought that would help find out? We know our average cost per lead for the different channels. Just to leave away AdWords ads for a certain time is not really an option nor would that statistically mean anything, i.e. if we skip AdWords and have the same number of leads after that and compare it with the months before (with AdWords) that could also be due to other reasons (seasonal aspects, etc.). Put in other words: if we skip AdWords people would still click (more) on our other two search results (local & organic). I am not sure if the additional leads coming from AdWords outweigh the cost we have for that. Would love to know your thoughts about that. Thanks a lot for your input in advance. Cheers, Cesare

Have you had success using adwords to promote blog content?
From time to time I see an ad pop up in search results for blog content and have often wondered how much success these ads have had in promoting the specific post. Does anyone have experience with this? What results did you see?

Question regarding Google Adwords?
Just had a question regarding Google Adwords. I have an e-commerce store (kiwimodfurniture.com) in the furniture niche and I originally was planning to create a different ad group for each product. Since I have 1300 products I would have 1300 ad groups. However a lot of the products don't have enough search volume and Google won't display my ads. Then I decided to get a bit more broad. I plan on having an ad group for each sub category on my website. For example, modern lounge chairs, modern arm chairs, modern sofas, etc. Question: Is this too broad? Will the ROI be terrible because of this? Thanks!

How to Preserve Capitalization of Specific Letters in AdWords?
I've used dynamic keyword insertion variations in Google Adwords, but here's one that's a bit tricky and I'm starting to think the only way to do it is to create a unique campaign group for this keyword without DKI to pull it off. Trying to dynamically insert the keyword actiNOS, but see no way to over-ride DKI in the campaign for this term. Any ideas or suggestions, or do I need to create a separate adgroup without DKI for this term?

Potential problems with multiple users of an adwords MCC
Morning all, I have had a query regarding granting access to an MCC account for people using various platforms. Now this a pretty specific query for an area outside my expertise, and conveniently both our PPC guys are on holiday so thought i would reach out to the community. Full request is this: "On the mcc I am slightly concerned about that, from experience I have run into problems especially with granting access for usage of API’s on an account, so if for example we wanted to use marin they would need access then another wanted to use adobe they would need another and if they are all sat under the SSM teams mcc that could be problematic or we would have to set up another." Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Tom.

Does anyone else get a crazy amount of misdials to your AdWords call extension?
Not sure how many people here also do PPC, but I thought it couldn't hurt to ask. Since we added a call extension to one of our AdWords campaigns a few months ago, we have gotten a crazy amount of misdials/wrong numbers. I'm wondering if anyone else has experienced this. Here's what happens: We choose one of the numbers we own, say 888-123-4567, and set it up so it displays ADWORDS on the phone's screen when it rings. This way, our customer service and sales reps will know when they are taking an AdWords call. We type that number into the call extension settings. AdWords then assigns a different number to us, which will appear on our ads and forward to our number. Say it's 888-234-5678. Then for months, every "ADWORDS" call we get is someone trying to reach a different company at 888-234-5679 or 888-235-5678. In other words, the number they're trying to dial is one digit off from the number AdWords assigned to us. When we first reported this to AdWords before Christmas, they simply assigned us a new number. It did not help. Now we just get misdials for different companies. So are we alone in this wrong-number phenomenon?

Can I pass keyword match type through the Adwords dest URL?
Hi guys, I'm currently using duplicates of the same keyword with different match types, and I'd like to pass the keyword match type through the query, the same way I can pass the keyword and creative. ie. http://my.site.com/?kw={keyword}&kwmt={matchtype}&aid={creative} As far as I can tell, Google allows you to pass the keyword, creative (ad id), network and a mobile flag. Microsoft allows you to pass the match type and and ad id, and I want to be able to do the same in my Adwords. Is this is possible, or is the only way to create different ad groups for each match type and pass a custom query? Cheers, Jez
