Why are my 301 redirects and duplicate pages (with canonicals) still showing up as duplicates in Webmaster Tools?
-
My guess is that in time Google will realize that my duplicate content is not actually duplicate content, but in the meantime I'd like to get your guys feedback.
The reporting in Webmaster Tools looks something like this.
Duplicates
- /url1.html
- /url2.html
- /url3.html
- /category/product/url.html
- /category2/product/url.html
url3.html is the true canonical page in the list above._ url1.html,_ and url2.html are old URLs that 301 to url3.html. So, it seems my bases are covered there.
_/category/product/url.html _and _/category2/product/url.html _ do not redirect. They are the same page as url3.html. Each of the category URLs has a canonical URL of url3.html in the header. So, it seems my bases are covered there as well.
Can I expect Google to pick up on this? Why wouldn't it understand this already?

Hi Tyler,
Is this still going on? My first reaction would be to say that Google will probably figure it out over time and the notifications will disappear/not reoccur. Have you seen new notifications of duplicate content since you made these changes?
Are these pages still appearing in the index? If not I wouldn't be super concerned - WMT updates lag behind what's going on in the index by quite a bit. If they are, take a look at the cache date - it may be that Google needs to crawl these pages again to find the canonical tag.
Since Google doesn't always "get" canonical tags, you may not see this error go away in WMT - as long as those pages are no longer ranking for anything, though, you should be OK. The redirects should stop registering as duplicate content sooner rather than later, though.
-
Preferred version is already set to WWW. Also, all canonicals point to the same URL and I do not have more than one per page.
-
Do you have more than 1 canonical tag on any of these pages? If you do, Google will ignore any tag.
Have you set the preferred version of your site? Is it possible that Google sees both the www and non www versions of your site?

301 Redirects from Subdomain to Location Pages
I have a client site that is getting redesigned. Its a multi location service provider. Currently (for whatever reason) the location pages are sub domains. https://<location-name>.site.com/ In the new design the locations will be on the main domain. https://site.com/locations/<location-name> We are considering using 301 redirects from the current sub domains to the new location pages on the main domain. The current sub domains are setup on a multi-site with A records for each one in our GoDaddy account. Would like to get feedback on any unforeseen SEO issues that anyone might have input on.

Html Improvements in Webmaster shows many as Duplicate Titles
Html Improvements in Webmaster shows many as Duplicate Titles. As attached they are not duplicates we made a way to make text hyperlinks if the name matches other objects in our site. How can we deal in such case for Google not to this it as 2 different URl's rather they are one. As the ones with ?alinks are just hyperlink URL's Say we have a name as "James" and he has a biography in our site. Say "Gerald" has a Bio as well and we talk about "James" in "Geralds" bio the word "James" gets a hyperlink automatically so when anyone clickes "James" it goes to his bio. k5jDM

Why is Coyscape showing content duplication error even after implementing 301 redirect ?
We are maintaining the corporate website of one of our prestigious clients "FineTech Toolings" (http://www.finetechtoolings.in). Recently I had raised a question regarding "2 websites running paralley in 2 diferent domains, i.e. 1 organisation having 2 different websites on 2 different domains". Recently my domain changed from http://www.finetechtoolings.co.in to http://www.finetechtoolings.in via 301 redirect, but still I am facing content duplication issue as per Copyscape. Hence I am having a small doubt regarding the same. Please note the following question very carefully and provide me the exact problem and the solution for the same: Even though I have implemented 301 redirect (http://www.finetechtoolings.co.in is redirected to http://www.finetechtoolings.in), which is completely ok as per the SEO rules, why is copyscape still showing that duplicate content exists in the former website? I think I am clear enough with my question.

OSE - still showing me links are there when they are not?
Has anyone else had the issue for a couple of months now where ose is showing links that are live when they are not. I am doing seo for a big e-commerce website so it is important i can find out what the anchor text distribution is for the domain. How is this possible when ose shows me links which are not live? There's been 2 or 3 updates and still showing expired links in our back-link profile. This is very frustrating and has led me to see if anyone else can recommend an alternative which is more up to date? And yes before seomoz reply, i know you only update a certain percentage of the web.
