Strategy for 301s/404s
-
Hi all,
We receive a feed containing new products every morning, some products are removed and this obviously ends up in Webmaster as a 404.
Is it fine to leave this as a 404 or would 301'ing the link be a better option? If we leave as a 404 we end up with thousands after a couple of month which scares me and makes finding actual 404s more difficult.
Essentially, if lots of pages are being removed everyday, what's the best way of tackling these?
Thanks!

If you could just show the 404 error and custom message on the original URL it would save you a redirect. Otherwise, that sounds like a good plan.
-
You can redirect to the main category page or just create a custom 404 page (and even show related products on it if your CMS allows it).

Thank you for all your suggestions so far!
These exact products won't be back in stock, but there are similar ones we'll be able to link to as a 'this has sold but you may be interested in...'.
At the moment our problem is just keeping track of our 404s - With so many from these products everyday it floods Webmaster and Moz and makes it hard to see any actual 404s we need to deal with.
Ideally we want to keep them indexed, not every products disappears after a day, some stay on for weeks.
Perhaps we could 301 to a custom 404 page which says something like 'sorry this product has sold...' and show others the user may be interested in? This is what one of our competitors are doing.
Thanks!

Hi,
Are they products that will come back in stock again soon? If so I would have a page that says it is temporarily out of stock but why not sign up to newsletter that will tell you when it's back in. That way they may still buy the product from you.
I'd also add 'you may also be interested in' products on the page to see if people want to buy something else from you in the meantime.

Hi,
my approach is a little different:
I'm working with a job board and lots of job post are outdated every day.
I add a noindex tag in order to give google index only relevant pages. Also in these outdated pages we introduce similar job post to drive the user to another relevan job post for him or her.
If I should do a redirect I redirect to the category page but it's a little weird for the user I think.
Hope it helps.

Redirect to a custom error page, then why not directly provide the error page. It seems a bit overkill to do both.
-
Hi,
IMO you should create a custom error page for all deleted products and redirect (301) all deleted products to custom 404 error page.
I'm not saying that you should apply 301 every time when product's deleted. Ask Web developer to place such condition in coding that will redirect all deleted products to custom error page.
Hope this helps.
Thanks

Should i switch from .com to .fr / .de etc
Hi, I have a seo question that I just cant seem to get an answer for. Right now I have an international ecommerce shop selling to several european countries.
Search Behavior | | Internet360
The setup is like this:
www.domain.com -> 301 -> www.domain.com/nl (dutch)
www.domain.com/uk (english)
www.domain.com/fr (french)
www.domain.com/de (german) I also have the domainnames for the countries I sell to:
www.domain.nl / www.domain.fr / www.domain.co.uk / www.domain.fr Its quite easy to switch to the later because I allready own the domains and can technically change this within an hour in our magento2 multistore. I think the customers would trust their local tld more than the .com and my question is: Is it also better for SEO?
Or will the splitting of the backlinks hurt me. Thanks for your insights.0 -

GWMT - "Tag Site For Child Directed Treatment" Effect On Search / Rankings?
Hi All, We have a client who has been directed to tag their site for "Child Directed Treatment" in Webmaster tools to comply with AdExchange policies. The site is, generally speaking, directed at those between the ages of 13 and 16 along with their parents, but does NOT collect any data (No sign in, login, signups etc). You can find out more about the specific tag here (unfortunately not much more about it) https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/3221080?hl=en Our concern is that we have never heard of this specific tag, and our client is asking us to let them know if that this will have no effect on search traffic or ranking. I can't find much in the way of anyone who HAS implemented this tag and the effects it has had on their site. They are ad supported, receive millions of unique hits a month, and the majority of their traffic is from branded keywords. Would love to hear from anyone with ANY experience or thoughts on this process and what to be aware of. Your assistance is muchly appreciated.

Is putting/removing Adsense ads on the site affects crawling for seo?
Because I noticed when we totally remove Adsense ads on our site, the pages crawled per day on the google webmastertools suddenly dropped into noticable amount and we tested again to turn it on for a singe day, it jumped up again. So if Adsense affects crawling then, if we have adsense ad on all pages of the site the more chances it gets crawled by the bot? WS76R8w

Best way to remove worthless/thin content?
I have a Wordpress site with about 3,000 pages and 1,000 of those are no value/duplicate content and drive no traffic. They are blog posts each with a single image and permalinks like example.com/post1, example.com/post2 etc. I've started by deleting pages and 301 redirecting to relevant pages that actually have content. Is deleting and 301 redirecting the best route? Is 1,000 to many 301 redirects? Should I just delete the pages that aren't really relevant to anything else? Anything else I should know about deleting all of these pages? Any help would be great!

Google Places rankings go away, but organic rankings stay the same / get better?
Hello, I hope you all can help me out here with the information I could provide. Anyways, the past number of months I have had 1 of our clients rank extremely high organically and on Google places. For example: My client is a law firm so if you search “CLIENTS-TOWN Attorney” they would come up organically on the first page and if you were in that town and search “CLIENTS-TOWN Attorney” or even just “Attorney” they would also come up in the Google Places list. Now for some reason starting a week ago I noticed they have completely disappeared from Google Places. No changes have been done to their site and everything is the same as it was. Their organic searches are the same if not better than before. Do you guys have any clue as to why this happened and how I could possibly turn this around? Thanks for your help in advance!

Why are my SERPs fluctuating 60+/- on a weekly basis?
I have a blog that's gone from not indexed, to indexed and ranked around 85 on 3 target key phrases. With a bit of SEO the blog jumped to around 11th on those 3 key phases in a week or so. Now, the following week, it has bombed back to 76th. Why the dramatic fluctuations?

Geo-targeting / Presenting Unique Content
A client is debating housing two websites under one URL. The sites would offer similar services at different price points. For example, if a user was coming from a San Fran IP they would be presented with the "high-end" packages while another user coming from Dallas would get the "low budget" content. What are the SEO implications? I know that auto geo-targeting can sometimes be risky. It seems like IP locators aren't accurate all the times (especially from a mobile device). Advise? Basically, the client wants to make sure that a Dallas user will be presented with the "right" keywords in the SERPs. What would you recommend? Thanks!
