Unnatural Links Warning Disappeared from Search Console Account
-
Hello all,
In 2013 I had an Unnatural Links Warning message in my GWT account. I believe that it was a result of the work of an old SEO company. When I received the warning I was working with an SEO. He helped me clean up some links. He also uploaded a disavow file for me. He did not file a reconsideration request. He told me that it was not necessary at the time. The message disappeared from my account.
A few months ago a similar message appeared in the manual accounts section of my account. I gathered inbound links from GWT, Majestic, etc. I went through them myself and tried to contact lots and lots of webmasters. I got many links cleaned up. I spent several months on this project.
I just logged into my Search Console account this afternoon and clicked through everything and guess what... that manual penalty message is gone. So... what does that mean?
I assume that I should still upload the disavow file for the sites that did not respond to me that are spammy. Should I still try to file a reconsideration request even though there doesn't seem to be a manual penalty?
How should I proceed? Thanks.
Melissa

Your article pretty much sums of my situation.
The warning that I saw a couple of months ago was a "partial match manual penalty", but it is gone now.
I want to see if I can get a few more things to come do or add the no follow and then I will go ahead with the disavow.
Thanks for your response.

Hi Melissa,
All manual penalties do expire. But just to be sure...is it just the message that disappeared, or did the entire manual action disappear? To know, go to Search Traffic --> Manual Actions. Do you see "no manual webspam actions" there? If so, then most likely the penalty expired.
I wrote more about this here:
If your manual action expired, then the good news is that you don't need to try contacting each site owner to get links removed. Remove the unnatural link that are in your control (if any) and disavow the rest on the domain level. Most sites that get unnatural links penalties also have issues with penguin algorithmically, so you definitely want to make sure your link profile is clean.

I am actually going to keep doing a little more cleaning and then upload the disavow. Hopefully this will do the trick.
Thanks for your responses.

This is correct, I've seen the same thing happen and it's true that penalties do sometimes just expire. And as Andy says, it doesn't mean that all that auditing work you did was for naught. You can still upload a disavow file, and you've been excused from the ritual of begging for Google's forgiveness

Hi Melissa,
Penalties do actually just expire, but it isn't like there is a set time period for this, so if you have no mention in Webmaster Tools of any penalty, then you really don't have one. You won't be given the option to try and do a reconsideration request either. I am pretty sure it was John Mueller that confirmed this.
I would still go through and disavow sites that have not got back to you though, just as best practice and to do a little damage mitigation. You may find that the penalty comes back at some point in the future if you don't.

Website Snippet Update in Search Console?
I have a company that I started working with that has an outdated and inaccurate snippet coming up. See the link below. They changed their name from DK on Pittsburgh Sports to just DK Pittsburgh Sports several years ago, but the snippet is still putting the old info, including outdated and incorrect description. I'm not seeing that title or description anywhere on the site or a schema plugin. How can we get it updated? I have updated titles, etc. for the home page, and done a Fetch to get re-indexed. Does Snippet have a different type of refresh that I can submit or edit? Thanks in advance https://g.co/kgs/qZAnAC

Directory links with no follow
Hi I'm researching competitor backlinks & they have a lot of directory links which are no follow - but they rank very well. Is this type of link building even allowed by google? I know they they aren't allowed followed directory links, but will no following them help with rankings?

My website (non-adult) is not appearing in Google search results when i have safe search settings on. How can i fix this?
Hi, I have this issue where my website does not appear in Google search results when i have the safe search settings on. If i turn the safe search settings off, my site appears no problem. I'm guessing Google is categorizing my website as adult, which it definitely is not. Has anyone had this issue before? Or does anyone know how to resolve this issue? Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks

PR links
Its seems that at lot of or competitors are using PR site to place articles with links. They are using the same article across many sites with the same anchor text link - But they seem to be doing very well in the rankings.... I have steered away from this type of linking as I assumed Google wouldn't be keen on this type of activity but I seem to be wrong.... Any views on this?

Does Unnatural Links penalization cause de-indexation?
Hi All, One of my sites was under Unnatural Links Manual Penalization. Its been over two months since it was revoked and we see no changes at all. In fact, we still have couple of pages (important landing pages) that are still de-indexed (I checked it by searching in quotes a whole sentence within the page and got no results). Does it mean that even though the site's penalization was revoked it is not completely over yet and I just need to be patient or is there something else hovering over the website? Thanks

Not sure if I should disavow these links or not
I am on the marketing team for CandyGalaxy.com we are an online candy store that specializes in bulk candy for events. Were just about a year and a half old and i'm running into some SEO strategy road blocks lately. When we started the company we used an oversee's seo company. For the first few months results were great then things took a massive dive as google began rolling out updates early and mid last year. After that point we started taking things in house and have been trying to create content and begin content marketing. We launched a blog @ blog.candygalaxy.com and also launched and educational resource at candybuffet101.com - However the question i'm up against now is what to do with those bad old links? Are they actually hurting us? Or just neutral? I'm also trying to decided what to do about the links in my footer? We put those there because those are truly our most popular products and we wanted customers to have easy access, but are those links potentially harmful? I'm questioning these issues because I feel like there is something holding back some of my pages from ranking. For example "blue candy" is a very popular section of our website. We have worked on a lot of content for the blog related to blue candy, made videos, photo shoots ect. We have customer reviews on page and unique category content. According to open site explorer our DA and PA are around the range of most of the sites in the 8-12 serp position. But we have more social activity then all but the top 2-3 spots. However the page almost impossible to find via search. Its not in the first 300 results and surely the page is more relevant then an entry about quilts.. Similar situations like this have led me to think that maybe there is a technical underlying issues that I have not addressed. ? The content is definitely there because if i type in a line from the content directly to google it is the first result. So the site seems indexed properly.. Would love to hear any feedback from similar experiences or ideas. Thanks!

Unnatural links warning and steps to fix it
Hi there, Firstly our website is - imrubbish.co.uk Basically we were unintentionally using a rogue seo company for about 5 months who charged a lot of money and built absolute rubbish quality links. When i saw the type of links being built i immediately stopped them as i knew they were bad news but the damage had been done. I have since moved to a completely ethical seo company who for the past 6 months have tried with me to remove this penalty without success. Here are the steps we have taken. Unnatural links warning. Submitted a file with all the links we know are bad and resubmitted. Not good enough We then used disavow tool as there were so many links we had no control of. Along with a detailed write up of what has happened and who had done it. Not good enough Now the problem my seo guy thinks is because there are more and more links appearing almost daily that are still left over rubbish from the old seo company. I think there might also be other problems - maybe my anchor test distribution is spammy etc, i dont know and i am hoping someone can maybe help with a couple more pointers. I have asked a similar question before where there was a discussion about even just leaving it and concentrating on building more ethical links with brand anchor text but that was not working so we used the disavow tool. We have been stuck in this rut for over a year now and could really do with some extra help/guidance from anyone who has experience or knowledge of what we should do. I saw the post yesterday about this very subject and hope someone could help drill done specifically what could be the problem in our case. We would also look at hiring someone if they could help. Thank you Jon
