International SEO strategy for an ecommerce with 3 languages.

Hi all,
I've an ecommerce which ships worldwide and we maintain 3 languages, spanish, english and french. My main business is in Spain, so spanish will be shown in the root domain: http://domain.com/. English will have the /en/ subdomain and french the /fr/ subdomain.
After some research, I've concluded that the best strategy for my business is the following.
1º- Translate all the URL's to the correct language, since now are in spanish.
2º- Implement Hreflang tag (with self-reference):
Note: Due to the "universality" of english, Does it make sense? Or should I use spanish as default since it's the most important one. 3º- Create the 3 sites in Search Console and only geo targetting french sobdomain to France. Since I really want to boost in France rankings. Do you consider this as a contradiction with ? I could also target country in the hreflang.
4º- Add language tag in each language version:
<meta name="language" content="spanish">in http://domain.com/</meta name="language">
<code class="broncode"><meta name="language" content="english">in http://domain.com/en/</meta name="language"></code>
<code class="broncode"><meta name="language" content="french">in http://domain.com/fr/</meta name="language"></code>

In that case you can eventually rely on IP detection, and if someone from Belgium is entering on your site, then you can fire an alert, somehow as Amazon does:
"We detected that you are visiting us from Belgium, so we suggest you to visit the French version of our web site".
This, though, does not solve the problem of Belgians speaking Flemish

Thanks for your response! I've read some of your responses about International SEO and they helped me a lot. Actually the idea about keeping my default store without language code came from one of them, I think.
With regards point 3, yes I want to target french people in france, not only because of the language, but the messages about shipping costs, delivery time, ... are related to them too. I understand that someone from belgium will be affected and will view the page in english.

Overall a good answer, but I disagree on point 3 in this specific case.
In fact, if Diego is interested only in targeting French users and not - for instance - users from Maghreb (Morocco, Algeria et al), then the hreflang should be consistent with the geo-targeting it is doing on Search Console, hence the hreflang should be "FR-fr" (only French speaking people in France).

Thanks for the prompt response!
Actually I thought about the expansion, but I didn't see problem with that structure. If tomorrow I want to target mexico I guess I'd create a subdirectory for them with a spanish version for them, since their spanish have peculiarities. Moreover, with the current hreflang, mexican people querying in spanish would be covered. Anyway, I agree with you, your proposal is clearer. I just wanted to know if I could save tons of 301s (and risk) in the most important version of my web.

I would personally use domain.com/language for all the sites and use the root to propose the choice of language like this example http://www.volvocars.com/ (which to me seems to be a more future proof solution) if you want to extend your website to other languages or specifically target other regions (example Mexico- which is also Spanish speaking).
1: fully agree - it's much better to translate the url's
2: hreflang - seems ok. You can always check the implementation on http://flang.dejanseo.com.au/ to see if the implementation is ok and/or use this hreflang generator http://www.internationalseomap.com/hreflang-tags-generator/ to create the code.
For the default version - up to you but I would rather go for English as it's more a universal language than Spanish.
3. Geotargeting is not in contradiction to the hreflang tag for the exemple you give - it would have been if you would have set the language to Chinese & geotargeting to France.
4. The language tag you mention doesn't seem to be correct - see also http://stackoverflow.com/questions/4417923/html-meta-tag-for-content-language - rather use for Spanish, for French,.. (you could check the specs on this as well: http://www.w3.org/International/questions/qa-html-language-declarations
5. You can use self-referencing canonicals - it's however not necessary to use the canonical to set your preferred version (http://googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.be/2011/12/new-markup-for-multilingual-content.html)

What is the best way to manage multiple international URLS
Hi All Our company is looking to expand into Europe (we are a UK based company) and we are planning to copy over our current .co.uk site to a .com one and create 301 redirects to maintain our SEO rankings. With the .com domain we were looking to use this as our main ecommerce site and then create sites for different countries in Europe. What we are unsure about is the best way to execute this in terms of the domain. Would it be best to have it setup as a domain structure such as: UK = www.example.com/gb/

How to deal with disproportional content investment for a ccTLD for a multi-language country,
We have a website for the Belgium market, serving content and products on be/nl (Dutch/Flemmish Belgium) and .be/fr (French Belgium). However, as a Dutch-based company you can see our primary focus and objective is to serve content to Dutch Belgium rather than French Belgium. I wonder if, and so, what are the downsides are of only investing in half of the site?

SEO in foreign languages
Hi everyone, I currently run a website called Barquitos www.barquitos.com The site is an extension of a shop that is based here in Spain. Though because the town is particularly touristy we built the website to offer English and Spanish as language options on the site. English on Barquitos.com and Spanish through a sub domain es.barquitos.com. In an ideal world I want to rank the English version for English phrases on Google.co.uk, and the Spanish sub domain on es.barquitos.com. However, my Spanish is only at a reasonable standard, probably not good enough to look at writing quality content in Spanish. Is building up the Page Authority and Domain authority for the English main domain enough to rank the Spanish sub domain or do we need a focussed approach for both languages? Any tips or advice for helping to rank sub domains in foreign languages would be greatly appreciated. Thanks everyone Stu

What are the best practices for translation of city/state names for international SEO? (ie. New York in English vs. Nueva York in Spanish)
I'm working on international SEO / translation of a global travel site. While we have a global keyword research and translation strategy in process for each market they serve, I've run into a unique question. Overall, we are translating (and localizing) content for each market but aren't sure what to do with location names. Each country/state has cities and locations that have their own dedicated pages. I see three options for these location names (when titling a page and writing content): keep them in English, translate the names in the market languages, or use a combination of the two. The challenge with altering the location names to the market languages is that they are truly not known by those names. Though there are some instances where it may make sense…for instance **New York **in Spanish would be "Nueva York" with **‘**Nueva' being the Spanish translation of ‘new’. There are other instances, where no translation exists. If you’ve had a similar experience I'd love to hear your approach/recommendation.

International algorithm update release dates.
Does anyone know if Google releases all algorithm updates worldwide or if they do it slowly across the globe? I have a SEO agency in Argentina and it does not seem like the algorithm updates hit us as they do in the USA. I’ll give you an example. Penguin 2.0 did not even create a dent in some really spammy websites that we watch. Thanks Carla

Geotarget subfolders with the same language or get rid of duplicates but lose option to geotarget?
Hi, we have a domain that is aimed to cover LatAm region. Currently, the homepage contains country selector for ~20 countries. 95% of them hold content in Spanish. We have only homepages for each regions as separate subfolders, i.e.

etc. but once the user clicks on menu item he is taken back to main domain subpages, i.e. www.maindomain.com/comprar My struggle is to decide whether it is better to: A) copy all content for each subfolder, which will create huge amount of duplicates (there are no resources to create unique content and it is even impossible taking into account nature of the product - mostly tech.specs, etc.) and implement hreflang sitemaps and configure GWT to target each country with its own Spanish content (the same for each country) OR B) remove all local subfolders and keep only main domain in Spanish that will serve all countries within the region. With this option, we will get rid of duplicates but also lose option to geotarget. So, my questions is which option will do less harm, or if there is any other approach that comes to your minds. SEO for Subdomains for different languages .com/fr, .com/es
Hi All, I was wondering how best to to approach optimisation of a site that exists on a single .com domain, but has different subfolders for different languages. The site is a .com and it has subfolders for French, Spanish, Russian and English. The business is situated in France and the vast majority of clients are French and English speakers. I've read that it's possible to geo target these subfolders using webmaster tools however I believe this is an inferior method of optimisation than having tld's. Just wondered if anyone had experience of htis and could provide any advice ? As they won't be rebuilding the site for another year or so I wondered if there were any quick wins? My second question is to do with how best to set these campaigns up within SEO Moz. would it be better to track at a subdomain or subfolder leverl (for different languages)?
