Tools necessary for a Technical Audit of website with penalties and need remediation?

Tools necessary for a Technical Audit of website with penalties and needs remediation? I am being tested for a job interview to prove and/or disprove a website has issues. I am familiar with Moz tools but I'm not sure of the procedure for this request? I am not finding anything online. The client will be giving a website and I will be doing this audit.
What tools would you use?
What exactly should I be looking for?
What are some obvious fixes?
WHERE CAN I LEARN MORE?

Joseph,
Yes, GWT = Google Webmaster Tools
In GA, you will want to take a look at traffic levels, Bounce Rate, Page views, Time On Page, etc. If any of these metrics show a significant decrease instantaneously (over a couple of days) you can be fairly sure there is something going on from a penalization standpoint. That, or the GA tracking code may have been tampered with during a site redesign. The way to know this is occurring is if your rankings are staying relatively high, but your measured traffic is decreasing drastically. We had a client who went through this just this week - it's a small problem to fix, but it can make your heart race when you think it's a penalty.
GWT will inform you of any penalization taken against your website (if it is manual). If it is algorithmic, your only real warning will be your ranking and traffic drops. Besides that, it is also fairly good for security issues, but these may not be alluded to directly. A great way to determine whether a site is at risk/hacked is to check the link profile - if there is an unnaturally large number of incoming spammy links, there are good odds you are the target of a negative SEO attack, or the site is hacked and being used for spam. Use a site: search to determine if new pages are being created on your sitemap and what they are targeting.
These are worst-case scenarios, so I don't know if you will be tested on them. More likely you will have to make adjustments to some basic on-site ranking factors like H1's or Title Tags.
Feel free to touch base any time if you need additional tips - you can PM me anytime.
Best of luck!

in GA - traffic drop offs, in fact any large changes in any metrics
GWT - manual actions, system messages, security issues

Dmitrii! Thanks very much!
Any pointers and/or specific areas to pay attention to in GA and GWT? Joe

Hi.
My belief is that for ANYWHAT good TECHNICAL audit you will need access to Google Analytics and GWT. Because it's TECHNICAL. And these tools will tell you everything about penalizations etc.
Yes, you can use MOZ, but if you don't have access to historical rankings data - there is no much use to determine anything about penalizations.
The rest is covered by other comments - ahrefs/majestic/OSE for backlink profile, MOZ Rank Tracker for current rankings, webpagetest and PageSpeed for loading times.
And the most important - your own head. Just look at the website. If that website has been penalized - there is huge reason for that and you'd be able to see it just by looking at the website architecture, content etc.

Hi Joseph,
I will give you a list of the tools I use/have used for auditing purposes of a website and you can pick and choose what you think might be useful:
On-Site - These will help you with on-site penalties (Panda)
1. SEMrush (http://www.semrush.com/)
Beautiful on-site auditing tool. Provides you with knowledge of the site from the perspective of Googlebot and outlines all issues with URL's included so you know where to go/what to fix with minimal involvement from you. It is a monthly subscription service and also incorporates keyword-tracking software, among other things. Deliverables include PDF's and CSV's of data.
2. SEO Powersuite SiteAuditor (www.seopowersuite.com)
This is a one-time cost piece of software. It is less flexible and in-depth than SEMrush in my opinion, but it gets the job done. The primary selling point is that SEO Powersuite provides you with multiple SEO tools for a one-time fee.
Off-Site (Link Profile) - These will help you with off-site penalties (Penguin)
1. Majestic (https://majestic.com/)
Great link-profile tool that allows you to conduct link audits of a website. I use this tool to develop competition analysis reports, and to determine the value of links, whether they are worth keeping, what links I might pursue from competitors, etc. It is a monthly service and you can compare your client's site to others in their niche/industry directly from an off-site perspective. Reports are in CSV format.
2. Ahrefs (https://ahrefs.com)
This is a more in-depth tool that many of my co-workers prefer compared to Majestic. They perform much the same service, but Ahrefs has a more extensive database. It is a more "techy" option than Majestic, which is geared more for client presentation.
You will also want to make sure that they are providing you with all the tools you need to conduct the technical audit - GA access, GWT access, etc.
Hope this helps and let me know if you need any further pointers!
Rob

Moz tools will show you all of the crawl issues (Which includes any crawl errors, duplicate content, meta tag errors, robot.txt errors And A LOT more), spammy links, on page seo, bad reviews and many other problems.
I'm not sure what else they would be looking for. Those tools will bring up so many errors (more than likely) Then you just need to learn/explain how to fix these errors.

Help me to know why are all pages not being tracked by the Moz tool for on-page optimization reports?
The On-page Optimization report that the Moz tool shows, is not tracking all the pages from my website. I know this because it isn't showing a ranking for all pages on my website. Is there a particular reason why this is happening? It is important for me to know details of all pages, else it does not give me a comprehensive picture of what's going on in SEO.

Estimating the number of LRD I need to outrank competitor
I just ran a SERP/keyword diffculty report for a keyword I want one of my pages to rank Also, I just conducted the on-the-page-optimization and now I am going to start buidling links. => I would like to estimate how many linking root domains I need to overrank one of my competitor. These are the MOZ data:
Moz Pro | | He_Jo
1. My page:
Page Linking Root domains: 0
Root Domain Linking Root Domains: 151 2. Competitor:
Page linking root domains: 1
Root Domain Linking Root Domains: 5,786 I don't really know on which metric (Page or domain LRD) to rely on in order to make an estimation and I would be glad for some help! To simplyfy the problem, assume that all toher factors (code, on-the-page keyword use., social etc.) are equal for both sites. Can I just get 2LRD to that page in order to likely outrank my competitor or do I need around 5000 more links poiting to my site? I think an answer to this question could help a lot of users here, since I saw similar questions/difficulties regarding the use of page LRD vs. root domain LRD P.S. Non of the pages of my website do currently rank in the top 100 for that keyword.2 -
SEOmoz tools: Keyword Difficuty + On-page Analysis
To analyse the current KWD situation. I would want to see the top 10 results link metrics (as in Keyword Difficulty & SERP Analysis) and each page's On page score (as in On-page Analysis) for the keyword. Those two figures would give me a pretty good picture of the current situation. Kind regards,

Competitive Link Analysis Tool?
Hi, I ran a competitive link analysis report today and back came quite a few domains that 2 or more of my 5 main competitors link from. Is it worth me submitting links to these sites? And would i be best served submitting my homepage URL or submitting a brand page such as Creative Recreation Trainers? I want to target that brand but don't want to do it if my main URL is better? Any ideas? See below my report. | Subdomain | Subdomain mR | Subdomain mT | # Competitors | # Linking Pages | Link Acquired |

Could SEOMOZ make a tool thats connected directly to Webmaster Tools?
Could SEOMOZ make a tool that Crawls Internal Links that's connected (or crawls) directly from Webmaster Tools? (So link metrics on our domains would get updates more often) This would eliminate the cost of crawling the entire internet. I hate having to wait a month to see updates on my domain metrics and links. I would like to see updates regularly on my own domain. I understand you can just look at Webmaster tools to see your latest links but they don't have any link metrics. So it’s difficult to see your best links. If this already exists please refer me? Otherwise please show your support for this being developed?

Ultimate Ranking Tool integrating Analytics / Adwords / Google WM Tools
I currently use SEOMOZ Campaigns and Advanced Web Ranking for monitoring our KW rankings and those of competition. AWR is a brilliant tool with so many different reports, methods of viewing etc. SEOMOZ campaigns are good but don't come close to the monitoring power of AWR (EG I monitor over 50 competitors on over 1000 KW's on a Daily basis with AWR and recieve a variety of set emailed reports on the data). However, one thing that SEOMOZ campaigns have that is useful is the traffic data - but this is still a bit basic and I think could be improved. The problem with AWR is that it doesn't integrate with your Analytics / Adwords / Google WM Tools - so it is only showing you half the picture. Knowing how your site ranks for each keyword is helpful, but it would be nice to understand the value of each keyword. For example, being able to see your rank position and how much traffic that keyword has sent you over time would be helpful. It would also be nice to see the number of searches that are performed for that keyword each month . For example, lets say I saw that I was ranking at number 11 for “hover mower” and getting 500 hits per month. Two months from now, if I was ranking at position 7, it would be nice to be able to immediately see how that changed the amount of traffic I was receiving for the term. Is a position of 11 (first item on page two) better than position 10 (last item on page one)? If you can link it to your analytics, you could then link it to your goals, and goal values to get a complete picture of where your keywords rank the value of the rank, and the improvment on that value when rank changes. If browsed around for such software but can't find anything like this - does anyone know of any software that can do this - or something close to this? Many thanks
