SEO Impacts if changing from https to http (or viceversa)
-
Hi there,
I want to take the benefits (both Google's SEO rewards and increased site speed) from putting on-line my site (it's not yet live) with a SSL certificate and make it use the new HTTP/2 protocol.
Now the question is: if in the future I won't renew the SSL certificate (because too expensive, maybe), so the site will run through normal HTTP, do I risk to see changes of my pages on the SERPs? Will I lose all positions that I got?
Thanks in advance for your tips!

From what I have been told, the ranking gain is less than the loss in link juice you would have by doing 301's from http to https, therefore there is no actual ranking benefit. If there was , I personally think everyone would be doing it.
Like Chris says above, John Mueller said in a recent hangout, that if you had 2 identical sites in everyway and both was josling for position, then the https would take preference but personally I am waiting for ranking benefit to atleast equal the loss from 301s before I consider doing it.
thanks
Pete

https - Google have said the ranking benefit for this is like as follows, you have two sites nearly identical deadlocked, Google will choose the https version over the none for this.
Users tend to trust e-commerce sites a bit more with an ssl but it depends on the niche really.
Normal problems from ssl is bad redirects which cause the problems, undoing is assuming you do everything to the book shouldn't have any problems should you want to go ahead.
Hope that helps.

Hi Valerio,
For a customer (ecommerce site) i had experience that it indeed was to expensive and the rankings didn't drop after we went from https back to http. As John mentions in the future it might be an extra ranking factor for Google but thats guessing... For other the reason of trust it is always a good idea. For my customer i now work with an PSP (payment service provider) which handels the payments in https.
Good luck with all!

I will answer your question indirectly. Google foreshadowed a couple of years ago, to get your site in order for mobile. They raised it a couple of times, and then in April this year brought in a penalty for not being mobile friendly.
I personally think exactly the same will happen with https - so I recommend implement https, iron out any bugs, page speed issues etc. and then hold on without fail. It will become a positive ranking factor at some point in time above the "all sites being equal a https site will outrank a a http site" - the case present scenario.
So I recommend if you are going through the effort now rather than query it make it a non-negotiable for the future.
Hope that assists.

Changing URL to a subdomain?
Hi there, I had a website www.footballshirtcollective.com that has been live since July. It contains both content and eCommerce. I am now separating out the content so that; 1. The master domain is www.footballshirtcollective.com (content) pointing to a new site 2. Subdomain is store.footballshirtcollective.com (ecommerce) - pointing to the existing site. What do you advise I can do to minimise the impact on my search? Many thanks Mike

Tabbed content impact
Hi all, I know historically tabbed content has been devalued, what's the situation currently? I've heard a lot about mobile first changing this. This is a design that has been produced by our designers: https://i.gyazo.com/35f655c7ba2bc89a87b9476e4a14534d.png Each tab contains approx 1000 words and previously has been a unique article. Would love to know your thoughts on this design and the benefits/losses of doing it like this. Thanks, Tom

Http and https protocols being indexed for e-commerce website
Hi team, Our new e-commerce website has launched and I've noticed both http and https protocols are being indexed. www.mountainjade.co.nz Our old website was http with only the necessary pages running https (cart, checkout etc). No https pages were indexed and you couldn't access a https page if you manually typed it into the browser. We outrank our competition by a mile, so I'm treading carefully here and don't want to undo the progress we made on the old site, so I have a few questions: 1. How exactly do we remove one protocol from the index? We are running on Drupal. We tried a hard redirect from https to http and excluded the relevant pages (cart, login etc from the redirect), but found that you could still access https pages if you we're in the cart (https) and then pressed back on the browser button for example. At that point you could browse the entire site on https. 2. Is the safer option to emulate what we had in place on the old website e.g http with only the necessary pages being https, rather than making the switch to sitewide https? I've been struggling with this one, so any help would be much appreciated. Jake S

Hi Ya'll I'm looking for a company or independent who can transition our website from http to https. I want to make sure they know what they're doing with a Wordpress website. More importantly, i want to make sure they don't break any seo juice from external sources while internally nothing gets broken. Anyone have any good recommendations? You can reply back or DM me. Best, Shawn

E-Commerce SEO
Dear SeoMoz fans, I'm really glad to be a part of the community. Just have a quick question. I run a marketplace similar to eBay where users sell the products. I would like some suggestions on how to effectively proceed with SEO for an ecommerce marketplace of this type. Should I be proceed developing product review or product comparison landing pages and build links towards them as often suggested or should I consider alternative marketing methods? Looking forward to your replies.

Is this Domain Change Worthwhile?
Hi- I have a client who has setup a new criminal law firm in the last few months. The URL is like: www.somenamelawyers.com ['somename' is the same # characters as their company name] I have run a successful AdWords a/c for them and many of the big traffic and conversion keywords include 'criminal lawyers'. From a SEO perspective, the long goal is to get traffic for 'criminal lawyers' and keywords that phrase match that. So I am considering migrating them to www.somenamecriminallawyers.com. I have researched this issue and understand the technicalities involved in moving. My question here is 'is this change worthwhile'. I think it is worthwhile because it really is in a sense rebranding them to be more clearly in a specific business domain, ie. criminal law. Also, they are a new outfit so they don't have a lot of backlinks yet. And mainly, they will get a SEO boost to their core keywords 'criminal lawyers'. Thanks in advance for your thoughts- Jules
