404 Error
-
Hello,
Seomoz flagged a url as having a 404 client error. The reason the link doesn't return a proper content page is because the url name was changed.
What should we do? Will this error disappear when Google indexes our site again? Or is there some way to manually eliminate it?
Thanks!

Hi Moosa,
Wow - that is a super helpful answer. I don't know how to install a Drupal modul, but it's great to see there is an easy way to do this. Much appreciated! I'll try and figure out how to install that patch and go from there.
Cheers!

Usually there is a path redirect module in Durpal.. all you have to do is to add that module and set redirect from old URL to the new one.
Here is a guide that might help!

Hi Moosa,
We are using a Drupal (6) website. Does that give you enough information? Drupal is its own CMS, right?
Thanks!
-
Now this is very much depends upon what language you are using the system will be different for ASP and PHP or if you are using any CMS then setting up a 301 Redirect will be different!
Need more information to answer this!

Hi Moosa,
Thanks for the reply!
This is the same as a question I asked yesterday, but how do you do a 301 redirect? Is it on the site or on the server? Is there a little piece of html code I can put in to indicate that a redirect is expected?
Thanks!

The URL is changed means there must be a new URL for this... the idea is to 301 redirect the old URL to the new one so that anyone who will visit the old URL will automatically switched to the new URL where the content is available.
Hope this helps!

Spam pages / content created due to hack. 404 cleanup.
A hosting company's server was hacked and one of our customer's sites was injected with 7,000+ pages of fake, bogus, promotional content. Server was patched and spammy content removed from the server. Reviewing Google Webmaster's Tools we have all the hacked pages showing up as 404's and have a severe drop in impressions, rank and traffic. GWT also has 'Some manual actions apply to specific pages, sections, or links'... What do you recommend for: Cleaning up 404's to spammy pages? (I am not sure redirect to home page is a right thing to do - is it?) Cleaning up links that were created off site to the spam pages Getting rank bank // what would you do in addition to the above?

Sitemap as Referrer in Crawl Error Report
I have just downloaded the SEOMoz crawl error report, and I have a number of pages listed which all show FALSE. The only common denominator is the referrer - the sitemap. I can't find anything wrong, should I be worried this is appearing in the error report?

How do crawl errors from SEOmoz tool set effect rankings?
Hello - The other day I presented the crawl diagnostic report to a client. We identified duplicate page title errors, missing meta description errors, and duplicate content errors. After reviewing the report we presented it to the clients web company who operates a closed source CMS. Their response was that these errors are not worthy of fixing and in fact they are not hurting the site. We are having issues getting the errors fixed and I would like your opinion on this matter. My question is, how bad are these errors? Should we not fix them? Should they be fixed? Will fixing the errors have an impact on our site's rankings? Personally, I think the question is silly. I mean, the errors were found using the SEOmoz tool kit, these errors have to be effecting SEO.....right? The attached image is the result of the Crawl Diagnostics that crawled 1,400 pages. NOTE: Most of the errors are coming from Pages like blog/archive/2011-07/page-2 /blog/category/xxxxx-xxxxxx-xxxxxxx/page-2 testimonials/147/xxxxx--xxxxx (xxxx represents information unique to the client) Thanks for your insight! c9Q33.png

301 or a 404
Just had a discussion with a collegue about a page on our own website. We have some cases which are outdated. These pages receive some visitors but they arrive there when they search for the clients brand name, so for us they are irelevant. What's the best way to handle these kind of pages? Is a 301-redirect to the showcase overview the way to go or do we make it a 404 and include the showcase overview in this 404?
