Search traffic steady, Landing pages receiving traffic had massive drop
-
Following the week of Google's major algorithm update in January, we saw this graph in our Moz dashboard. (green bars are # of landing pages receiving traffic from search, blue line is traffic from search)
Traffic from SEO grew slightly, but number of landing pages receiving traffic fell by more than 50%. We didn't make any changes to sitemap, rel=canonical, number of pages being published, etc. Traffic from top keywords held consistent. Number of pages/images google crawled and indexed grew per webmaster tools. Big spike in Nov/Dec is because we are in retail, seasonal not technical issues.
Is anyone else experience the same thing? An algo change? Or something more specific to our site?
Quality traffic is what we care about, so number of pages traffic is going to could be a positive thing (easier to optimize). But jury is out.

Thanks - excellent analysis. Exactly what I was looking for and hadn't considered this possibility. Will dig in!

We don't have much useful data (i.e. we have a lot of data, but can't see any clear patterns) around the January core algo updates, other than knowing that they occurred. It's hard to pin down from the graph, and I'm not sure what the scope of your traffic and page count is, but my first guess would be that you lost ranking on some long-tail pages that weren't contributing much in the way of traffic.
It's possible these were low-value pages or even some pages that shouldn't have been indexed (like duplicates), in which case this could be fine. It's also possible that these pages had quality issues that knocked them out of ranking contention, which wouldn't be so good.
It's not an easy problem to solve, but the first step I'd take is to try to pin down: (a) what those pages were, and (b) if they have any relationship. If you lost traffic to 500 completely different pages, that's going to be tough to interpret. More likely, though, there's a pattern. Maybe these are mostly product pages, or blog posts, or internal search results, etc. If you can find their commonality, that's your best chance of knowing what went wrong.

Same here - normal traffic till mid Dec. Then drop for Xmas and NY. And this is normal for holidays. Then up in beginning of Jan, from 24-25 drop little bit (back to normal traffic).
So there is also change called "core update":

Why did my rankings drop so fast?
Hi Mozzers, One of my clients have suffered from a sudden ranking loss that started beginning of August. A little background: My client is a big cleaning company that has many franchises nationwide and had very good rankings for the past few months. Generally the busiest time of the year is summer and the 4th quarter is the slowest. Organic Traffic generally drops by 5 to 10% between Q3 and Q4 of each year. 2 things have caught my attention while investigating these ranking losses The latest recent Update from the moz index evaluated the website's DA of 48 when in the summer we had a DA of 56. Never seen such a drop before!! My first question is how accurate is the moz index? How can I make sure this data is accurate? I am very surprised because we have been working hard on getting good quality links for the past year and a half. If the DA is accurate then that could explain the ranking loss Google updating its search engine to the Hummingbird version. Do you guys think this has anything to do with the drop in rankings? The content on the website is not the best but is fairly decent. I am still not sure how the ranking drop could be related to Hummingbird? I have also checked webmaster tools to see if I got hit somehow by penguin and it seems fine. Thanks mozzers

Local Vs Organic Search Keyword Ranking
This isn't a question. It's a simple suggestion that I'm hoping will inspire a change at Seomoz. I love what this site does. What it helps us do as community. What it helps us achieve collectively. This suggestion is based on that love... I think we all can agree that the rankings between local reviews and organic reviews are very different beasts entirely. They should then be treated this way within the Seomoz data with separate reports. The vast majority of reputable small businesses don't care about national rankings, but would rather get to the top of the local charts with their 5-star reviews. Can you imagine the power of a report that is dedicated to helping you shape your client's results to achieve this? I like seeing the results of local in the keyword report, but we need a report dedicated to local search to make a difference in our rankings. With all of the recent chatter on local search, I'm surprised this isn't already available.

Page Authority is the same on every page of my site
I'm analyzing a site and the page authority is the exact same for every page in the site. How can this be since the page authority is supposed to be unique to each page?

Fixing the Too Many On-Page Links
In our campaign I see that it reported that some of our pages have too many on-page links. But I think most of the links that was seen by MozBot is related to our images. There are a lot of images in our site and at the same time we support 11 languages which adds additional links One of the pages that have a lot of links is www.florahospitality.com/dining.aspx What can you suggest to fix this? Thanks.

DmT Dropped
My question sounds stupid . But I had a good Moz rank for my Domain also Moz trust. It was in the high 400s for both..I was very happy with this score My DA also dropped considerably. There was not much of a reason i could see,In fact my page scores still were up there and never moved. But the domain scores plummeted. I had added a Blog to my site once i added the blog there were roughly 13 pages involved.Of these 13 pages i had problem errors ,notices ,and warnings for all the blog pages.I did not notice this until a couple days ago . The 13 errors were mostly duplicate description tags ,302 redirect ,and other small stuff like this .. like fl** Could these items listed above actually be the problem behind my scores all dropping like flies??** And with the update being only 3 days away if i repaiir these right away do you think i will get my scores back ?? Or will i have to wait for another 30 days ...I really dont want to be left standing with such a low score ..I already started making the repairs. Thank you all...

What the . . ! Duplicate Pages and Titles WAY up?
My duplicate pages went up 50 plus in the past week, and my duplicate page titles went over more then 100. We recently redesigned the website, but it has been up for several weeks now. The only change I made specifically last week or late the week before was to get my 301 redirects done to get the www. version and the non www version pointing to the same place (as well as a couple other sites that point to it). I'm sure this is not enough info to figure out what went wrong . . . I'd love some help in figuring this out though.
