What do you think about SEO of big sites ?
-
Hi,
I was doing some research of new huge sites for example carstory.com that have over million pages and i notice that many new sites have strong growing for number of keywords and then at some point everything start going down
(Image of traffic drop attached)
there are no major updates at this time but you can clearly see even on recent kewyords changes that this site start loosing keywords every day , so number of new keywords are much less that lost keywords.
How would you explain it ? Is that at some point when site have more than X number of indexed pages then power of domain is not enough to keep all of them at the top and those keywords start dropping ?
Please share you opinion and if you have any experience by yourself with huge sites.
Thank You very appreciated

It sounds to me like you need to do a Content Audit with the goal of pruning out all pages with zero traffic and zero links from the index. See the following resources:
How To Do a Content Audit - Step by Step (Moz)
Classic Content Audit Articles (Linked-In)
Content Audit Case Studies (Linked-In)
Using URL Profiler for Content Audits ( URL Profiler)
Here's the slide deck for a presentation I gave last year about them.
Here's a recording of a webinar with the presentation above.
Common Content Audit Strategies I think the site you described would be considered Extra Large with a Penalty "Risk" so this is what the tool recommends:
"Focus: Prioritization of Pages for Content Optimization. Are you SURE there is no content-based penalty risk?
Most sites with this many pages have major content issues, meaning this would be the wrong “situation” for them. In the rare case that they don’t, prioritize the pages based on rankings, traffic potential, revenue… and propose how many to improve each month with ongoing copywriting and on-page optimization." -
Hi Dani,
As John mentioned, there are so many factors involved that it's very tough to accurately pinpoint the reasons why a site might start losing rankings.
To answer your question directly - no, there is no tipping point where your link profile just isn't strong enough to carry a certain volume of pages. There is a similar scenario that could happen but I'll get to that in a moment.
The other thing is that to my knowledge, the traffic data in Ahrefs isn't 100% accurate like Analytics, it's more of an estimation based on extrapolating a smaller pool of data. I'm not completely sure about this but that's my understanding. Basically, the drops you're seeing might not actually be as pronounced as the graph indicates.
So, the type of scenario where there are "too many pages" is moreso related to the user experience. If you're creating large volumes of pages just for "better SEO", you're going to have a bad time. If your site has 20 real pages and 80 pages just targeting a keyword then this is where you're like to start seeing a drop in your rankings as the overall quality signals on your site begin to dip.
Users don't enjoy keyword-heavy and redundant pages and the metrics will demonstrate this to search engines very quickly.
You should always be looking to improve the strength of your link profile, but if you're worried about creating too many pages, don't be. Create the pages that make sense for the user, provide a great user experience and you'll be fine.

There are too many factors in rankings hence too think one factor is the answer is rarely the way forward.
Do a google search site: That will give you a rough idea of page authority & no. of pages indexed.
I recommend to stop trying to find one "short cut" answer, step back do a site audit - properly identify what is going on. It could be that competitors are now all mobile friendly... so they now rank better. It could be anything. Slow down do it properly, if you think it is domain authority alone, whilst doing a site audit obtain a relevant high authority backlink and see if that assists.
-
So you dont think its just domain authority (page rank) is not enough power to spread across all pages ? like when site has less pages power was enough and rankings climb up but when too many pages been indexed then it wasnt enough to spread across all pages ?
-
Then I would go back to the landing page experience. What is your conversions rate? Are they averaging over 5 minutes on site or less... How many page views? Are page views increasing? A factor in seo is the landing page experience and how long the customers stick around and what they do. There was a site called jabong in india that had a similar issue - they kept improving the landing page experience and all the metrics slowly turned around.
If it not that you have to go back to basics and do a site audit, which you should do annually anyway. https://moz.com/blog/technical-site-audit-for-2015
Hope that assists.

Hi,
Thanks for reply. I dont think its seasonal because its a clear that site loosing keywords in google everyday. So at some point at the beginning there was a boost and site was getting more new keywords each day than its been loosing, and now its loosing more than gaining.
-
Firstly there is not enough shared information.
That said we manage several large sites and there are times were they are static and there are dips, but seasonal factors are huge for most large sites, from education to health insurance. So have you accounted for seasonal factors? Also the traffic growth is exponential at the start and from an outside point of view it seems that the landing page experience is not strong enough or not answering the searchers queries.
I would do a deep dive into onsite behavioral analytics and see how long they are staying on, and where dropping off. In short look for pogo sticking.
Hope that assists.

Technical Site Migration
Hello All- I have been in the SEO industry for about 4 years and feel fairly confident in my technical SEO; however, I am being asked to conduct a migration that is both a platform change (step 1) then a consolidation change (think of combining websites when a company is acquired) all within a 4-5 month time span. I feel like as I begin to create this multi-step checklist I would love to hear of others that have gone through something similar or have resources you could point me to form more of a process/procedure standpoint. Again - I feel confident in the technical output but I have a fairly junior team and want to execute this smoothly. Feel free to add recommendations or ask for clarification if my discussion question doesn't make sense.

SEO question
Hi there! I'm the SEO manager for 5 Star Loans. I have 2 city pages running. We are running our business in 2 locations: Berkeley, CA & San Jose, CA. For those offices we've created 2 google listings with separate gmail accounts. Berkeley (http://5starloans.com/berkeley/) ranks well in Berkeley in Gmaps and it shows on first page in organic results. However the second city page San Jose (http://5starloans.com/san-jose/) doesn't show in the Gmaps local pack results and also doesn't rank well in organic results. Both of them have authentic backlinks and reviews. It has been a year already and it's high time we knew the problem 🙂 any comment would be helpful. thanks a lot

Is my site being penalized?
I launched http://rumma.ge in February of this year. Because I'm using a domain hack (the Georgian domain), I'd really like to rank for just the word "rummage". After launching, I was steady at around page 4/5 on searches for "rummage". However since then I've tumbled out of the first 100. In fact I can't even find the site in the first 20 pages on Google for that search. Even a search for my exact homepage title text doesn't bring up the site, despite the fact that the site is still in the index. I'm wondering if one of the following could be the root cause: We have a ccTLD (.ge)--not sure about the impacts of this, but seems like it might not be the root cause because we were ranking for "rummage" when we first launched. Tried running an Adwords campaign but the site was flagged as a "bridge page" (working on getting this addressed). I'm wondering if this could have carryover impacts into natural search rankings? We've tried doing some press and built up a decent number of backlinks over the past couple of months, many of which had "rummage" in the anchor text. This was all organic, but happened over the span of a month which may be too fast? Am I being penalized? Beyond checking indexing of the site, is there a way to tell if I've been flagged for some bad behavior? Any help or thoughts would be greatly appreciated. I'm really confused by this since I feel like I've been doing things right and my rankings have been travelling downward. Thanks!! Matt

SEO for a plumber?
Hello, How does a small, local business win at SEO (without abusing directories, articles, and paid links)? It seems that everyone is saying "create unique content", but that just doesn't seem realistic for a small plumber in a big metro area. One might suggest coming up with helpful articles about plumbing tips, etc., but there are thousands of spun articles on article directories already. On page optimization is in place, we are listed in the main directories, we've asked the people we know to link to us, and we are engaged in social media. What would you recommend next? Thanks, Will

Need help/insights. Site SEO = OK, Authority BLs = OK, Rank page #1\. How to reach pos #1?
Hi there! Some doubts are confusing my head and need some assistence from you to get on the right track. I'll explain my situation and want to hear from you what do you really recommend for med/long term permanent results. 1 - I have a PR2 (.com.br) domain; 2 - I'm talking about little/med competition micro-niche keywords; 3 - I got all pages I want to, indexed (I have a well SEO constructed website with internal link building); 4 - If a keyword has average competition, I'll already start ranking in page #3 on the SERP's; For a few low competition keywords I start on page #1; 5 - I do a little whitehat link building, 1 or 2 backlinks on authority sites and then like 15 days later I came to page #1, generally on position 9/10; And then I got stucked 🙂 No more authority sites where I can get backlinks... I do some posts on the company twitter/facebook page's, but they are no follow, so I don't really now if this can help. (never see a SERP result). I did some "blackhat" stuff to see if it really work: I can say for sure the "profile backlinks" that we can buy from some sites doesn't work (maybe it's just for me). I can't see it on webmaster tool and neither my ranks changed since I bought a pack of 100 links (the links are working, I see it one by one) to test. Maybe the problem is about the domains, cause my site is .com.br and I'm buying .com profile links. I guess google understand backlinks from .com.br more valuable for my sites. Back to whitehat: I wrote some articles and posted it the right way, of course on .com.br articles sites, got it indexed and can see the backlink on webmaster tool, but no change on SERP's. (maybe this can be a long term result and I'm not seeing it yet). I'm really "scratching my hand" to do some blackhat stuff, but I don't want to lose what I already have done... I heard a lot about scrapebox but doesn't fell confortable to spam as hell a lot of blogs. I really want long term permanent results (my sites are totally whitehat/corporate sites). Can you expert guys give me some point to where I need to "walk" now to improve the SERP's? I never reached top #1 and want to try to rank at least one time to understand how this can be made... I'm thinking now to pay someone to rewrite 20 copies of an article and up it on some sites, to see if 20 can improve something. But still no confident, because it will cost like $100 for a good writer do it for me on my language. Maybe I can do better things with 100 bucks. I guess I did the path right: Internal SEO -> got indexed -> backlinking from authorities -> new articles backlinks to me (is it ok at this position or no?) -> (what next ?) I know SEO is a hard/never ending work, but what I'm trying to get cleaned on my head is the path of the work (if a right path really exists). Every word will be apreciated. What do you can suggest to me to try now? (please give me a hint to see SERP's results 🙂 if I feel that something worked, no matter how it can cost to me, but I'll pay for the work happily) Sorry if I'm a little confusing, english isnt' my first language. Thanks.
