Acquired a company, what should be done with their website?
-
Hi,
I work for a furniture company that essentially purchased another furniture store some time back a few years ago.
However, this furniture store that was acquired had a website. The website has no existing pages anymore, only the homepage. The homepage has a message on it describing how it's been taken over and then links to our website.
The spam score for the website is 8. I was wondering if there was something else we should do instead of the link, whether that be a straight 301 redirect or if we should have the link at all considering its score.
I can provide more information and links if needed.
Thanks in advance,
Adam

That's great. Thanks Tim.

Just doing a quick test in Opensite explorer it would appear that http://www.scadgells.co.uk has a couple of external backlinks links from a website called furniturebuyer.info, where as http://scadgell.co.uk has no backlinks. The links are from a relevant source, but doubt will provide you with a huge boost.
If you can access OSE, I would suggest looking at the following link for the www. domain too just incase there are a few more elements.
https://moz.com/researchtools/ose/pages?site=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.scadgells.co.uk As well as the backlinks it also appears to show a possible 7 indexed pages which you may want to redirect or even 404 depending on what they were originally about. None of the pages deeper than the homepage appear to have any backlinks.Hope that also helps.
Cheers Tim

Hi Laura,
Thanks for your answer, I'll do just that and follow your advice.
The site is http://scadgells.co.uk/
It doesn't appear to have any backlinks from what I can see and we appear above the site for brand specific searches in Google.

You'll want to do a risk assessment of the domain before set up 301-redirects to your site. Set it up in Google Search Console if you haven't already. Check for any manual actions or malware warnings associated with the site. Then you'll want to audit the backlinks to check for any problems there.
If you can share the link with the community, someone else might find issues that you don't see.
I suspect the spam score would be lower if the site was more than one page. Right now, it probably seems like a doorway page since it's just one page that links to another site.

Delay to rank for authority website versus new website
Hello, I have a website that has been existing for years. How long does it take if I have a good content on a page for it to rank ? I read here and that that it can take 4 to 6 months but it never says if it is for a brand new website or a old website that has an authority and some links. I also read that some people publish content and rank within a week on competitive keywords. So who is right, what is there to read in between the lines ?

I create new website (nowwhatmoments.com) with the same content from the old spam action website (nowwhatstudio.com). As google removed my old website content from search indexed. Or Can make edits the old website content and make it 80% original for a new website?

Using author on every page of website?
I'm currently get to grips with schema and one thing im using is author on my blog posts and seeing my photo etc on organic searches which are related. I see one of my competitors is using author on every page on their website, not just blog posts etc. Are there any recommendation when it should be used? Should it be site wide or is it really intended for blog posts etc? Would it be wrong for me to use on every page of my website as one of my businesses is myself as a lone person? This is what you get when searching for driving lessons in just about any town! https://www.google.co.uk/#gs_rn=15&gs_ri=psy-ab&tok=LS_DOrAHswmHC9_8AJZEJA&suggest=p&pq=driving instructor brighton&cp=20&gs_id=1k2&xhr=t&q=driving+lessons+crawley&es_nrs=true&pf=p&sclient=psy-ab&oq=driving+lessons+craw&gs_l=&pbx=1&bav=on.2,or.r_cp.r_qf.&bvm=bv.47244034,d.d2k&fp=45c2f917e11bca99&biw=1680&bih=843 Any comments welcome! SEO Company that bills on results?
After having bad experiences with a few seo and ppc companies, I would like to find a company that operates on the premise that they should get paid for producing results instead just for signing a contract. I'm not thinking that any payment is contingent results but that a large portion of the billing is. I also know that it can take several months to get to an seo goal so I'm not taking a "you have one month to fix our site or we don't pay" approach. Is there a company out there that has enough confidence in their white-hat processes that they actually back their services with some sort of guarantee?

Managing Multiple Websites via Add-On Domain
Hey SEOMOZ community, I've always been curious about whether or not hosting multiple websites through an 'add-on' domain has positive/negative effects on SEO for websites. Currently, I'm hosting 5 sites through an add-on domain at Hostgator.com. Is this a poor way to set-up my sites or is this OK?

One Website - Local + National Ranking
If a client (e.g. a winery) wants to rank both nationally and locally, what are some best practices for doing this on one Website? So the goal is to: Rank nationally for their wines, wine varietals, etc.so they're found by restaurants, distributors, customers (could include national directories, content creation ,etc.) Rank locally for their tasting room and wines for people looking locally or looking at that specific region (this could also include include Google places, local directories, etc.). I'm wondering if the site would need to be subdivided (or "siloed") where one section is heavily focused on national and another is on regional? Also, for the home page, which focus would be most important (maybe national because it's harder)? Thanks a for any ideas! Tom
