Google Indexing Desktop & Mobile Versions
-
We have a relatively new site and I have noticed recently that Google seems to be indexing both the mobile and the desktop version of our site. There are some queries where the mobile version will show up and sometimes both mobile and desktop show up. This can't be good. I would imagine that what is supposed to happen is that the desktop version is the one that should be indexed (always) and browser detection will load the mobile version where appropriate once the user is on the site.
Do you have any advice on what we should do to solve this problem as we are a bit stuck?

Have you got switchboard tags implemented? That should solve the issue.

You can easily restrict portions with robots.txt depending on how exactly your site is set up. So for instance, something like:
Desktop site: http://www.domain.com/robots.txt
User-agent: Googlebot
Allow: /User-agent: Googlebot-Mobile
Disallow: /Mobile site:http://m.domain.com/robots.txt
User-agent: Googlebot
Disallow: /User-agent: Googlebot-Mobile
Allow: /Or
User-agent: *
Allow: /
User-agent: Googlebot
Disallow: /mobile/
Allow: /
User-agent: bingbot
Disallow: /mobile/
Allow: /
User-agent: Googlebot-Mobile
Disallow: /
Allow: /mobile/
User-agent: bingbot-mobile
Disallow: /

What we recommend is that you make sure that you're serving up the mobile version to Google's mobile crawler and the desktop version to Google's desktop crawler. You may be doing both, serving mobile pages to both the desktop and mobile crawlers.
I recommend taking a look at that to make sure it's not an issue. You can crawl your own site using something like Screaming Frog SEO spider and change the user agent to mobile vs. desktop to test it.

de.domain.com/company for german and en.domain.com for english. Many thousands URLs has been indexed correctly. But Google Search Console tries to index URLs which were never existing before and are still not existing. de.domain.com**/en/company
en.domain.com/de/**company ... and an thousand more using the /en/ or /de/ in between. We never use this variant and calling these URLs will throw up a 404 Page correctly (but with wrong respond code - we`re fixing that 😉 ). But Google tries to index these kind of URLs again and again. And, I couldnt find any source of these URLs. No Website is using this as an out going link, etc.
We do see in our logfiles, that a Screaming Frog Installation and moz.com w opensiteexplorer were trying to access this earlier. My Question: How does Google comes up with that? From where did they get these URLs, that (to our knowledge) never existed? Any ideas? Thanks 🙂0 -

Staging & Development areas should be not indexable (i.e. no followed/no index in meta robots etc)
Hi I take it if theres a staging or development area on a subdomain for a site, who's content is hence usually duplicate then this should not be indexable i.e. (no-indexed & nofollowed in metarobots) ? In order to prevent dupe content probs as well as non project related people seeing work in progress or finding accidentally in search engine listings ? Also if theres no such info in meta robots is there any other way it may have been made non-indexable, or at least dupe content prob removed by canonicalising the page to the equivalent page on the live site ? In the case in question i am finding it listed in serps when i search for the staging/dev area url, so i presume this needs urgent attention ? Cheers Dan

Google Sitelinks
Hello, Good afternoon. I am having a site issue with Sitelinks. For some reason when I search Google for the brand I represent "California Olive Ranch" Sitelinks are not being generated. When I search for "Cal Olive Ranch" our site links are being generated. Our domain is Californiaoliveranch.com. Is there a way to tell Google to to change the site links to match our domain and brand name? Is this something that can be done in Google Webmasters? Thank you very much for your help. Adam P

Google indexing tags help
Hey everyone, So yesterday someone pointed out to me that Google is indexing tags and that will likely hurt search engine results. I just did a "site:thetechblock.com" and I notice that tags are still being pulled. http://d.pr/i/WmE6 Today, I went into my Yoast settings and checked "noindex, follow" tags in the Taxomomies settings. I just want to make sure what I'm doing is right. http://d.pr/i/zmbd Thanks guys
