Potential keyword cannibalization?
-
Hi, I'm doing an audit of a site for a very competitive term (project management software).
The site ranks for its root domain on the second page. They have a lot of other non-blog pages that are geared towards longer tail versions that include that term (project management software pricing, project management tool comparison, etc).
My question is: are those pages cannibalizing potential search traffic? Should they just stick to the one page (root domain) and include those longtail keywords on the page instead of creating various pages that seem to possibly be cannibalizing traffic? Is this a fair conclusion that these other pages is causing them to rank lower for the main head term?

"Canibalization is when the same page, competes for several keywords." This statement is incorrect.
One of the many articles that you can check about it:

Hi James,
By having several pages that target similar yet distinct keywords, the site is maximizing its web real estate and not harming its root domain's rankings. It is possible that both the root domain and a more narrowly targeted page can both rank for the same keyword; however, if you don't mind which one shows up above the other because they both take you to the same site, you don't risk hurting the results of either page.
Long story short: the pages targeting longer-tailed, more specific keywords should help capture additional traffic that a more general page (like your root domain) would not.
Hope that helps!

Hi James,
I have good experience with BIG pages. This means 1500+ words and infographics, pics and video all on the one page. The most important longtail keywords you can make paragraphs for with H3 headers. On this page you only put 2-3 internal links and 1 outbound to a Wikipedia or other source you gather information from. These pages get high "time-on-page" scores and you will notice the improvement in rankings rapidly (2-3 weeks).
Good luck!
Tymen

Hi James,
Lets get something clear: Canibalization is when the same page, competes for several keywords.
As you shared, there are many pages, each of them ranking on single or few SERPs. Keep it that way, make sure that optimization on those pages are correct and well targeted for the long tail.
The thing is: Work every page to get it ranked in just few keywords, included the root domain (that is also a page). As the root domain and the correlation with long tails SERPs: No, it doesnt harm its ranking.
Hope it helps.
GR.

How ot optimise a website for competitive keywords?
Hi guys, I hope to find some good answers to my questions, because here are some of the best SEO's in the world. I'm doing SEO as a hobby for a few years and had some very good results before the latest Google updates. Now I'm not able to rank any website for competitive keywords. The last project I started is this website (man and van hire company targeting London market).

The problem is that I can't rank even in Top 100 in Google UK for the main keywords like: "man and van london" , "man and van service london" ,"london man & van"...
The site has over 1k good backlinks (according to Ahrefs), unique content, titles and descriptions but still can't rank well. Am i missing something? Few years back that was more than enough to rank well in Google.
I will be very grateful to hear your suggestions and opinions.0 -
Name change to include a keyword?
Hello All...Just signed up for the 30 day trial with Moz. I am a wedding photographer here in the UK. If I was to change my company name to Simon Cook Wedding Photography from Simon Cook Photography, will this help my presence in anyway?

Worried about keyword stuffing penalty re: URLs
I've noticed a potential problem with a mult-location business (this is an example URL - not the actual name of the business) I sense this is OK: carsdepots.com/ashford/cars But then I noticed they've added cars to location part of URL in some instances (they have 6 locations in total and have done this with 5 of them): carsdepots.com/birmingham-cars/cars So we have cars in there 3 times (that's the maximum number of times in any URL but it looks a little spammy to me) I am tempted to remove yoga from the location names, or flatten the URL structure completely - your thoughts would be welcome, or perhaps I shouldn't even be worrying?

Local ranking (keyword) strategies
Hello SEOmozers, I've been working on improving all components of my SEO skills for the past 6 months. I have definitely had some great victories and some gray defeats. My newest challenge is local ranking for a home improvement company. My target is to rank them locally with Google within the top 7 results. I have managed to do so, but only for one keyword "windows and doors CITY". My campaign, in terms of anchor text has a wide variety of long and shortail keywords, I have not concentrated on the above keyword. My question is, how do I go about to rank this website in the local results for all other keywords "windows CITY", "window replacement CITY", etc... What I don't understand is how Google picks up which keywords to rank the website locally for, and which ones to ignore. Any information will be well received. Cheers, Nikster

Correct strategy for long-tail keywords?
Hi, We are selling log houses on our website. Every log house is listed as a "product", and this "product" consists of many separate parts, that are technically also products. For example a log house product consists of doors, windows, roof - and all these parts are technically also products, having their own content pages. The question is - Should we let google index these detail pages, or should we list them as noindex? These pages have no content, only the headline, which are great for long-tail SEO. We are probably the only manufacturer in the world who has a separate page for "log house wood beam 400x400mm". But otherwise these pages are empty. My question is - what should we do? Should we let google index them all (we have over 3600 of them) and maybe try to insert an automatic FAQ section to every one of them to put more content on the page? Or will 3600 low-content pages hurt our rankings? Otherwise we are ranking quite well. Thanks, Johan

Why is Google indexing either the singular or plural version of a keyword?
Hello Forum, We have just finished completely redoing a website and it seems that for several keywords either the plural or singular version is no longer being displayed in Google search results. For example, we sell yoga products, one of which is a bolster. In the SEO section of Google Analytics, the keyword "bolsters" has held a steady rank while "bolster" lost lots of rank and now no longer shows. Both keywords pointed to the same page and hold nearly equal rank, which has both keywords for "bolster" and "yoga bolster" Any idea what may be going on?
