Change category of a post
-
Hi,
Finally I decide to renovate my site structure, but I have a question, if I have an old post and I change its category there is some SEO problem? The post permalink is "www.sitename.com/namepost".
Last question, it's better to have one category for post or more than one category for post?
Thank You

As Martijn said, tagging multiple categories to a post can help with crawling due to more internal linking. Fortunately, if your URL is just sitename.com/post-title, then you can change/add existing categories and it won't make a difference as the URL won't change, so you won't have to redirect anything. If you're renaming categories, changing the category URLs, you may still want to redirect the old category URLs to the new category URLs to preserve the category pages' authority though.
If the site structure is more like sitename.com/category/post-title, that's when it may become an issue and you will want to redirect the old URL to the new URL. If you use Wordpress, I believe it will automatically redirect the old URL to the new URL if you do change the category. (Definitely test this to make sure it works with your version/plugins.) There are also plugins to help you tag multiple categories to a post but, setting a preference for the permalink category.

Hi Marco,
If the permalink structure is just the post slug then you should be good by changing or adding/removing multiple categories. If it would be the case that the category is part of the URL structure then I would be careful.
There can be upsides in linking to multiple categories as they would get more internal links which would build a better structure.
Martijn.

Delete old blog posts after 301 redirects to new pages?
Hi Moz Community, I've recently created several new pages on my site using much of the same copy from blog posts on the same topics (we did this for design flexibility and a few other reasons). The blogs and pages aren't exactly identical, as the new pages have much more content, but I don't think there's a point to having both and I don't want to have duplicate content, so we've used 301 redirects from the old blog posts to the new pages of the same topic. My question is: can I go ahead and delete the old blog posts? (Or would there be any reasons I shouldn't delete them?) I'm guessing with the 301 redirects, all will be well in the world and I can just delete the old posts, but I wanted to triple check to make sure. Thanks so much for your feedback, I really appreciate it!

How does changing sitemaps affect SEO
Hi all, I have a question regarding changing the size of my sitemaps. Currently I generate sitemaps in batches of 50k. A situation has come up where I need to change that size to 15k in order to be crawled by one of our licensed services. I haven't been able to find any documentation on whether or not changing the size of my sitemaps(but not the pages included in them) will affect my rankings negatively or my SEO efforts in general. If anyone has any insights or has experienced this with their site please let me know!

How to properly change your website's address in Webmaster Tools?
Hi There,We've launched a new website and as part of the update have changed our domain name - now we need to tell Google of the changes: Both sites were verified in Webmaster Tools From the old site's gear icon, we chose "Change of address" As part of the "Change of address" checklist Google presented, we added 301 redirects to redirect the old domain to the new one But now that the 301 redirects are in place, Google can no longer verify the old site And because it can no longer verify the old site, Google won't let us complete the change of address form How do we tell Google of the change of address in this instance - and has anyone else encountered this?CheersBen

Should you claim authorship on guest posts?
Suppose you write a guest post for an authoritative site, is it beneficial to claim authorship of the article by linking to your Google Plus profile and adding the site to your account as a site you contribute to? If yes, would you do this for dozens of sites? (since your contributor list could get really long).

Changing title tag in wordpress media pages
Hello! I have a problem of duplicate title on 59 pages in Worpress. I Guess it happened after a recent WP update, because, suddenly, I got a peak of 59 from zero in a day. The SeoMoz crawl report states that there are 59 duplicate title. As you may see in the picture those are all media pages, whose title is written really badly with the formula postname/filename/blogTitle, ending up with trunkated, too long, title tags, that result in duplicate page title. How can I simply hide these mediapages or sculpting the title tag the way I want? I am using all-in-one-seo WP plugin, which doesn't seem to provide a solution. Thank you all! 35 Categories + sub-categories for online store, can it hurt SEO?
this is my online store http://www.furnacefilterscanada.com I experiencing new site architecture for better buyer experience. I found this solution for setting up categories: http://filtration-montreal.mybigcommerce.com I ask this questions many times about my site architecture, I find this solution, using around 35 categories and sub-categories. Is it O.K. or it can hurt SEO to have to many categories. See example on this trial version of BigCommerce: http://filtration-montreal.mybigcommerce.com I will use the top horizontal menu for the most popular furnace filters sizes. Also, I want to use this cascading dropdown option in the header http://www.asp.net/ajaxLibrary/AjaxControlToolkitSampleSite/CascadingDropDown/CascadingDropDown.aspx where I wiil setup 3 options to select: filter width filter lenght filter depth What is your opinions, I'm I on the right path? ECommerce Platform Change
I'm just entering the process of switching web developer companies, and I was wondering what process would be best for redirecting our old product (new and used cars) pages. Our current design leaves much to be desired seo wise (http://www.resslermotors.com/index.asp?cmd=detail&vin=1FTSX30F3XEC01446&stocknumber=123911&sg=ocor5h42d2yhkla&Make=Ford&parCertifiedFlag=&Model=&parVehTypeID=&p=6&page=1), and redirecting all of them seems like it would be pretty complicated. In addition to that, we currently have 35,000 pages. Is there a practical way to do redirects with this many pages?

.htaccess problem using POST method
Hi guys I'm after some help with trying to achieve the following: 1. Canonicalise to http://www. 2. Remove the index.php from root and subfolders. I have the .htaccess code below, which seemed to work fine, but the urls use the POST method and this isn't working with the rewrites. Can anyone please advise as to what I am doing wrong? As you can probably guess .htaccess isn't my strongest SEO discipline! The code I have is: http:// to http://www. RewriteEngine on

RewriteRule ^(([^/]+/))index.(php|html|htm?)$ http://www.mydomainexample.com/$1 [R=301,L] Just to add to this I have found this which I think is what I need to restrict it to GET: RewriteCond %{THE_REQUEST} ^GET.*index\.php [NC]RewriteRule (.*?)index\.php/*(.*) /$1$2 [R=301,L] Thank you in advance for any suggestions as to how I may put this code together..
