Top 3 SEO Strategy/Research Practices
-
Hi Moz Community,
I am launching a series of new e-commerce websites and wanted to know before I started the content writing what are the TOP 3 strategy/research practices and techniques I should be doing before building my website?
Bonus points for those who can give me a Top 5!
Thanks,
Luca -
Hi Becky,
I found adding 200-300 words for the category pages worked best for my ecom site. I use 400-500 words for the main body on the products I sell. I (somehow) ranked number one on Google the previous 2 years based on organic content writing - no backlinks
My ecom site is LikeChimp.com - you can see how I use good content to rank, check out the page categories vs the product description: http://likechimp.com/product-category/buy-facebook-event-attendees/#
Hope this helps.

Hi
I have the same issue. I have an ecommerce competitor who writes loads of content for their category pages, under tabs & they perform very well. The content isn't particularly helpful, more about their range and what they offer.
I work on an ecommerce site, and I have tested adding content to some of these category pages - with some performing better than others
But if an ecommerce site is expected to have thin content on these category pages then what can we do to help them rank? I don't have much control over the layout of the page, this is controlled more by our parent company.
Any tips for improving rankings of these category pages?

Thanks! I am stuck now between thin content vs juicy content for my ecom products!

Hi James, what do you mean by 'thin' content? How could Google recognise thin content as good...

Hi Luca,
Content for e-commerce sites should be focused on conversion; if it is strictly an e-commerce site (no blog etc) then ensure your content helps people get the product they need, rather than providing a guide on a subject - you don't need to inform people how to use a knife, rather why they need a knife and how it can improve how they perform a certain activity.
I've experimented with a number of different content combinations in e-commerce and the two that have performed the most positively are 1) dedicated landing pages (400 - 600 words) with 3 or 6 items included below the text, and 2) item listing pages with 12 items visible but less written content than in example 1.
It can depend on what your niche is; there can be much more content written about certain items than others, but targeting your audience is a must.

What do you do with product pages that are no longer used ? Delete/redirect to category/404 etc
We have a store with thousands of active items and thousands of sold items. Each product is unique so only one of each. All products are pinned and pushed online ... and then they sell and we have a product page for a sold item. All products are keyword researched and often can rank well for longtail keywords Would you :- 1. delete the page and let it 404 (we will get thousands) 2. See if the page has a decent PA, incoming links and traffic and if so redirect to a RELEVANT category page ? ~(again there will be thousands) 3. Re use the page for another product - for example a sold ruby ring gets replaces with ta new ruby ring and we use that same page /url for the new item. Gemma

One company, 3 countries, 3 sites - best solution?
Hi all, I'm working with a company that has 3 x websites all on separate WordPress platforms. One is at .com, the others .fr and .de - they are essentially very similar. I have suggested that it is worth exploring setting all of these websites up on the .com domain with country-specific directories to combine their authority and help all 3 websites naturally rank due to combining incoming links, authority etc. Quesitons: To ensure each country has control of their site, would you maintain a separate install of WP at each directory, i.e: .com/fr/ and .com/de or would you put it all on the same WP? Would you go down this route of combining all 3 sites onto one domain with country-specific directories? What are the pitfalls?

SEO for a a static content website
Hi everyone, We would like to ask suggestions on how to improve our SEO for our static content help website. With the release of each new version, our company releases a new "help" page, which is created by an authoring system. This is the latest page: http://kilgray.com/memoq/2015/help-en/ I have a couple of questions: 1- The page has an index with many links that open up new subpages with content for users. It is impossible to add title tags to this subpages, as everything is held together by the mother page. So it is really hard to for users to find these subpage information when they are doing a google search. 2- We have previous "help" pages which usually rank better in google search. They also have the same structure (1 page with big index and many subpages) and no metadata. We obviously want the last version to rank better, however, we are afraid exclude them from bots search because the new version is not easy to find. These are some of the previous pages: http://kilgray.com/memoq/2014R2/help-en/ http://kilgray.com/memoq/62/help-en/ I would really appreciate suggestions! Thanks

Wordpress pagination and SEO
Hello Mozzers, We have incorporated Wordpress blog in our website. The blog has a fair share of what we believe is a valuable content both for the users and SEO. We have reached the point where our content is getting pushed out to pages 2, 3 and etc. 99% of the older content is still relevant and useful. However it does get less traffic from the users because it is not on the front page. I am dealing with it by showing "related posts" and get some traffic through that. I feel that the content that got pushed from the front page of the blog gets less love from search engines as well. The my permalink structure is /%postname%/ only, however when Wordpress adds page/1/ the SEO ranking appears to drop. Is it because Wordpress adds page/1/ to the address? What is a good way to optimize is? I have 15 posts showing on the front page should I increase it?

Parked former company's url on top of my existing url and that URL is showing in SERPs for my top keywords
I have the URL from my former company parked on top of my existing URL. My top keywords are showing up with the old URL attached to the metadsecription of my existing URL. It was supposed to be 301 redirected instead of parked but my web developer insists this was the right way to do it and it will work itself out after google indexes the old URL out of existence. Are there any other options?

Minor SEO for Yahoo and Bing
Over the past year, we have completely optimized one of the sites we manage for Google (removed bad links, reduced keyword count, etc) and we are doing great for Google organic traffic. However, in the process we have seen a steady decline in Yahoo organic traffic and Bing organic traffic. Enough so that I am looking for suggestions for quick fixes that aren't going to interfere with the Google optimizations that we made. Do you have any suggestions? Thanks for your help!
