Htaccess noob
-
Hi all,
I discovered that a site I'm working on has some pages from their old site that are stil live and getting traffic. I would like to add redirects for them to the .htaccess file.
Unfortunately, I have zero experience writing or editing .htaccess files. Here is the existing .htaccess file:
BEGIN WPSuperCache
END WPSuperCache
BEGIN WordPress
<ifmodule mod_rewrite.c="">RewriteEngine On
RewriteBase /
RewriteRule ^index.php$ - [L]
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
RewriteRule . /index.php [L]</ifmodule>END WordPress
And here are a few sample lines that I need to add:
Redirect 301 /files/John-Doe.html /staff/
Redirect 301 /files/Jane-Smith.html /staff/
Redirect 301 /files/contact.html /contact/So my question is, should I place those lines immediately after Rewrite engine on, or just before the closing IfModule tag or...?
There is no consistent pattern that would allow for a single rule or two. Oh, and I will backup the current .htaccess file first!
Many thanks for any help anyone can offer.

Hi there,
Usually my advice is to add any custom code after the default WordPress rules, just to keep it more organised. It is very important not to add the rules in the WP section (# BEGIN WordPress -> # END WordPress).
Also I usually add comments before every rule group I create (just to have it more organised, and if anything goes wrong - check Search Console for anomalies after implementation - I know where I need to revert/adjust). You can add comments by starting the line with a # sign.
I hope it helps.
Oh and BTW, when using Redirect 301, you should use relative path for the OLD url and absolute path for the NEW url, so the lines that you provided need to contain the full URL for the new version:
Redirect 301 old-relative-path.html http://www.yourdomaingoeshere.com/newurl/

.htaccess: Multiple URLs catches filename
Hi, I have the following line in my .htaccess:
Technical SEO | | rasmusbang
RewriteRule privacy stdpage.php?slug=privacy [L] So if you go to the www.mysite.com/privacy it takes the stdpage.php with the argument above. But if you go to www.mysite.com/privacysssssssss catches the same file. How can I prevent this? It will give me multiple URLs with the exact same content. I have a 404 page which i would like to show instead when the match is not 100%. -Rasmus0 -

Htaccess 301s to 3 different sites
Hi, I'm an htaccess newbie, and I have to redirect and split traffic to three new domains from site A. The original home page has most of the inbound links so I've set up a 301 that goes to site B, the new corporate domain. Options +FollowSymLinks

RewriteEngine on
RewriteRule (.*) http://www.newdomain.com/$1 [R=301,L] Brand websites C and D need 301s for their folders in site A but I have no idea how to write that in relationship to the first redirect, which really is about the home page, contact and only a few other pages. The urls are duplicates except for the new domain names. They're all on Linux..Site A is about 150 pages, should I write it by page, or can I do some kind of catch all (the first 301) plus the two folders? I'd really appreciate any insight you have and especially if you can show me how to write it. Thanks 🙂0 -
I need some HTACCESS help (Magento)
Hi Guys, I need some help on this htaccess issue in Magneto. So here is what I am trying to do: I wanted to change mysite.com/index.php/etc to mysite.com/etc so I turned on the web friend URLS. That did that, BUT there are still two versions of every page on the site. www.mysite.com/etc and mysite.com/index.php/etc So that isn't good for SEO. So then I applied a 301 matching redirect, RedirectMatch 301 /index.php/(.*) http://www.mysite.com/$1 That solved that problem. But now I am not able to log into the admin. It is mysite.com/index.php/pg45admin. It should redirect to mysite.com/pg45admin but the page just hangs.... It goes into a continuous loop. I tired using the custom URL and then the site crashed and I had to redo it. So what do I need to do for this to work?
