Multiple Local Domains and Location Pages Question
-
Hello Everyone,
So we have a priority site (domain.com) but also a geo-specific site for another location we have (domainNYC.com). Assuming both have completely unique content, different contact information and it’s justifiable to have a second domain (i.e. resources, brand/link equity…etc.) would it be recommend to also use the sub-folder approach on our primary (meaning domain.com/nyc)? And then potentially linking to domainNYC.com (just the once, not overdoing it)? Or just play it safe and keep them separate.
Our concern is doing both sub-folder and separate domain might cannibalize on local searches resulting in us essentially competing with ourselves for those terms. The benefit would be leveraging the priority domain and driving visitors there.
We could always ‘noindex, follow' the sub-folder page so users have access to the address on the primary domain too but wanted to see if anyone had any thoughts or suggestions as well as how it could pertain to linking (scarcely).
We have found a lot of information on choosing one over the other but not as much for whether both is recommended so any extra insight would be very appreciated.
Looking forward to hearing from all of you!
Thank you in advance for the help!
Best,

Hello George,
Thank you for your response and help!
It seems like doing both is the way to go (assuming no duplicate content, GSC and Moz are being monitored). I did have a couple quick follow-ups just so I’m clear what you meant and you don’t mind:
-
When you mentioned “…keeping things on the primary domain would be a better idea over time if …” – Did you mean that if it’s part of a regional strategy we probably shouldn’t do both and just stick to the sub-folders? I know that there’s tons of advantages to just using the sub-folder (especially from a resources/authority/link perspective) but assuming we need the separate domain I just wanted to be sure of you meant.
-
Also, if the regional site should naturally win out for a local search but we would want to use ‘second’ domain for local searches would it be best to not do both approaches? – I imagine it would depend on the value being sent from the priority site vs. ability to rank on its own but though I’d ask.
Please let me know if I could provide any further updates that could help.
Looking forward to hearing your thoughts!
Thanks again!
Best,

Hey Ben,
This is a big 'it depends', but here are some things to consider:
- What is best for the user? Google will tend to favor this over time.
- Is this part of a larger regional strategy that you will be rolling out for other locations. In this case, keeping things on the primary domain would be a better idea over time if you are doing properly structured sub-folder urls
- If it is a physical location use Google Biz to register and link it properly to the main site you want
- use Schema.org to properly tag the info of the location
The regional site should naturally win out for a local search and using the main site to direct users to the regional _should _give it a bump in relevance. As long as you don't duplicate too much content on that sub-folder page it shouldn't compete. So I would go with that strategy, but then monitor MOZ and Search Console to see if it starts to cannibalize. In this case you can quickly remove your main site page from the index.
Hope that helps.

Website showing #1 in Local search, disappeared from Organic search - previously #1?
We manage a website santamaryflorist.com - a local Ohio florist. She is #1 ranked on Google Local results (and also on Yahoo and Bing). The site's homepage was previously #1 ranked for Organic but has disappeared from Organic ranking over the past few days. It shows occasionally as #1 in organic, like every few hours, but typically does not show. - Sub-pages are still showing on organic but not front page- Last week we had some issues with crawl errors but those seem to be resolved for several days (pages not available)_Why would the site be showing #1 in Local but only occasionally as the #1 result in organic but most of the time not showing in Organic results at all? _

How can I change my Google Business to be a non local business?
Hey guys, Do you know how to change my Google business account to be a non local business? I want my Google Knowledge Graph to be clean and neat like this. Does it mean that this company doesn't claim the business? Will removing the address from the Google My Business solve it (which I don't know whether we can take down the address)? Thanks

Can I use the same interior photos for multiple stores in Google My Business?
Hi, The company I work for has many store locations across the country. Getting good/quality interior pictures has become very difficult for us. We recently good a Virtual Tour from Google for one of the locations, and they took some really pictures. According to Google, the "Photos should represent the actual business" and "Represent the real-world business location". My question is: since our stores are VERY similar in the interior, can we use the same pictures for them while we get more pictures? Would Google penalize this? Thanks!

Strange question about link juice.
I have been trying to get to the bottom of a Google algorithm error and have been showing examples of the issue at hand in another forum. This is not the same link that I have mentioned in other forums, so this is just an example. If repeated several times in a thread or series of threads, would this shortened link carry any juice for the featured result on the page? I was told it would, I do not believe it does anything other than illustrate my question in the thread.

Help with Google Places, local listings & Google+ please!
Hi all, I work for enterprise app development & mobile consultancy, Mubaloo. I recently asked a question around getting better rankings for London-based search results. One answer was to set up a local listing for Mubaloo's London office. I thought I had done by setting up our London office up on Places for Business - is this the same as a local listing? In addition to this, I can't connect our existing Google+ page to our local Mubaloo Bristol & London listings as Google has created separate pages for each! Is anyone else having this issue? Can it be resolved?

Local SEO for a company with 3 sites, for 3 different type of businesses
Hi I've been working for an employment lawyer in Sydney for 3 years now, all good, I built many citations and fixed all ones and the website/blog are ranking fine. Imagine I created the citation using e.g Anton Forester Employment lawyers, name, phone and address. Now the client just launched a website about property with the same name/brand and a different business title e.g Anton Forrester Property Lawyer and another 3rd website about conveyancing with the same name/brand and another business title e.g Anton Forrester Conveyancing law. My question is how do I build citations now that the name is different in the 3 cases, 3 websites but possibly the same phone and address? Thanks a lot Cheers Nico
