Tricky: Should I remove this extra navigation?
-
Hello there,
I am working on a website in which the owner has written navigation links manually at the end of all pages/posts.
Example.
Page/Post Entry content.
Go to home click here,
Menu item 2
Menu item 3
Menu item 4 etcWe already have navigation links for that on the main menu and additionally on a sidebar.
But we are two years in, and they have always been there.
Is there a chance removing all these links will better internal pagerank distribution?
Website has millions of views/month so I want to be sure - if I should just leave them as is or remove them all.
Or what extra questions should I be asking myself about this. -
Thanks James, I really appreciate your thoughts. Would love to get confirmation from anyone else willing to chime in.

Hi everyone, would appreciate any further comments, thanks in advance.

Hi James,
We're trying to increase traffic even more! This in my eyes can have an effect even at a Domain authority level.
Thanks for the words. -
Hi Ricky,
Thanks for your input, we are talking 8 links across 200 pages, that's 1600 internal inks. That's a lot of internal links which are in theory diluting pagerank of every page.
The paradox seems to be that if they are diluting said pagerank to the main pages of the site then I suppose it cancels itself out?
I don't mind doing these changes if we have a solid argument for or against...

Hi there,
I'm not totally sure that anyone can definitively answer that question (I could be wrong), but my thought would be that those types of links, if listed on every page would probably be ignored and any real ranking impact would be extremely minimal. I can't imagine this being very important one way or the other.
If you're nervous about removing, you could always experiment a bit at a time and monitor impacts, but I wouldn't be quick to attribute results one way or the other to such a minor issue (or non-issue).

Removing the Trailing Slash in Magento
Hi guys, We have noticed trailing slash vs non-trailing slash duplication on one of our sites. Example:
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | brandonegroup
Duplicate: https://www.example.com.au/living/
Preferred: https://www.example.com.au/living So, SEO-wise, we suggested placing a canonical tag on all trailing slash pointing to non-trailing slash. However, devs have advised against removing the trailing slash from some URLs with a blanket rule, as this may break functionality in Magento that depends on the trailing slash. The full site would need to be tested after implementing a blanket rewrite rule. Is any other way to address this trailing slash duplication issue without breaking anything in Magento? Keen to hear from you guys. Cheers,0 -
JS reliant faceted navigation - ecommerce/blog - is it a bad idea?
I have noticed that some e-commerce sites don't worry aout their store working when JS is switched off - yet some do - are there any SEO implications of losing faceted navigation/filtering functionality when JS is disabled I tried M&S - didn't work - but Tesco did - when JS is disabled.

How do Yelp and Justia get all the extra Meta Description Real estate?
I was doing some KW research for a client and noticed something interesting with regard to Yelp and Justia. For a search on DWI Attorneys, they each had over 300 character meta descriptions showing on the SERP without truncating. Everyone else was either truncated or within limit of roughly 160 characters. Obviously if there is a way to get something other than a list to show that way you can own some real estate. Would love to hear from some of you Mozzers on this. Here are two images that should assist. Best Edit: I found one that was not a directory site and it appears it is Google doing it. The site has no meta description for the home page and this is what is being pulled by Google. There are 327 characters here! The truncation marks are showing it being pulled from different parts of the page. Image is Killeen DWI Attorney. NOTE None of these are clients, etc. I also changed the cities so this is a general search. zAQpA qZ9KI 06p7U

301 or 404 Question for thin content Location Pages we want to remove
Hello All, I have a Hire Website with many categories and individual location pages for each of the 70 depots we operate. However, being dynamic pages, we have thousands of thin content pages. We have decided to only concentrate on our best performing locations and get rid of the rest as its physically impossible to write unique content for all our location pages for every categories. Therefore my question is. Would it cause me problems by having to many 301's for the location pages I am going to re-direct ( i was only going to send these back to the parent category page) or should I just 404 all those location pages and at some point in the future when we are in a position to concentrate on these locations then redo them with new content ? in terms of url numbers It would affect a few thousand 301's or 404's depending on people thoughts. Also , does anyone know what percentage of thin content on a site should be acceptable ?.. I know , none is best in an ideal world but it would be easier if there we could get away with a little percentage. We have been affected by Panda , so we are trying to tidy things up as best at possible, Any advice greatly appreciated? thanks Peter

Pros vs Cons - Navigation/content embedded within javascript
My programmer showed me this demo website where all the navigation and content is embedded within javascript: http://sailsjs.org/#! Google site search returned 51 in results, all pages pretty much unique Title Tags and Meta Descriptions Bing site search returned 24 results with pretty much identical Title Tags and Meta Descriptions Matt Cutts said it's fine but to test first: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mibrj2bOFCU Has anyone seen any reason to avoid this web convention? My gut is to avoid this approach with the main drawback I see is that websites like this won't do well on search engines other than Google that have less sophisticated algorithms. thoughts?

301 vs 410 redirect: What to use when removing a URL from the website
We are in the process of detemining how to handle URLs that are completely removed from our website? Think of these as listings that have an expiration date (i.e. http://www.noodle.org/test-prep/tphU3/sat-group-course). What is the best practice for removing these listings (assuming not many people are linking to them externally). 301 to a general page (i.e. http://www.noodle.org/search/test-prep) Do nothing and leave them up but remove from the site map (as they are no longer useful from a user perspective) return a 404 or 410?
