Rel Canonical question
-
Hi:
I got a report indication 17 rel canonical notices. What does this mean in simple language and how do i go about fixing things?

Thanks guys!

Also, it's just a notice, not a warning or error. More of a "hey, this is here and make sure everything looks OK" type of thing.

Did you not add these yourself? It is a single line of code on the pages of your site:
If the rel=canonical is exactly the same as the URL of the page it is one then don't panic everything is fine :). If the URL in the rel=canonical tag is different than the URL of the page it is on, you may need to change it. Rel=canonical means, in as simple language as I can put it:
Google, Bing, or Whoever shows up to your page. Rel=canonical says,"Hey! Google, Bing, or Whoever! I'd prefer it if you would look at this other page as the "definitive" version of this content." And then rel=canonical points the search engine to the other page. After this, the non-"canonical" page should drop out of the search results.
This is useful when:
1. You have two pages with very similar or duplicate content that you want users to be able to navigate to, but that you don't want Google to see as duplicate (they get very angry about that now). These could be on one domain, or on two different website that you run.
2. You have URLs that are dynamically generated, or have a lot of query strings (e.g., ?shoes=red), and you don't want Google to think that you are duplicating content.
3. Someone else takes your content and tries to pass it off as their own.
Many people (myself included) feel that you should have "self-serving" rel=canonical on every page of your site, where the URL is the same as the page it is on. This helps with number 3, since you are automatically telling Google "Hey, THIS is the definitive version" before anyone else has the chance to.
If the rel=canonical tags are pointing to pages that they shouldn't be pointing to, you just need to delete that one line of code.

Title Keyword Order Question
Hey there, Hoping someone could provide me with an answer / some insight into this. As an example, if I were to be targeting "Fish markets in" and "Fish shops in" as my keyword(s). And my site name was "The Fish Guide". I am trying to populate my title tags as best as possible without sacrificing readability and definitely making an effort to avoid the the spam-factor. Ideally I'd like to rank well (just focusing on titles at the moment, nothing else) when a user searches for "Fish markets in London" and **"Fish shops in London" **or "Fish markets in Los Angeles" or "Fish shops in Berlin" etc. If I were to use the following structure in my titles (in this case for London): "Fish markets and fish shops in London - The Fish Guide" Would this work as I hope? I.E. If a user searched for either "Fish shops in London" or "Fish markets in London" would the format of my title in this example work or would I need to have "Fish Markets in London" and "Fish Shops in London" grouped together? E.G. "Fish Markets in London - Fish Shops in London - The Fish Guide" Thanks!

301 Redirect Questions
I have a site I built on a wisiwig editing platform that will not allow a 301 redirect. The site has already been remade and I need to point it to another domain. To do the redirect, can I change it to another domain host that will allow a 301 or will that make me loose the authority of the site? I may not be able to move the content of the site. Please help.

Will rel=canonical cause a page to be indexed?
Say I have 2 pages with duplicate content: One of them is: http://www.originalsite.com/originalpage This page is the one I want to be indexed on google (domain rank already built, etc.) http://www.originalpage.com is more of an ease of use domain, primarily for printed material. If both of these sites are identical, will rel=canonical pointing to "http://www.originalsite.com/originalpage" cause it to be indexed? I do not plan on having any links on my site going to "http://www.originalsite.com/originalpage", they would instead go to "http://www.originalpage.com".

Frustrating Local Seo Question
I have just lost the top stop on Google Places (Pack 7) for one of my clients. The company that took it came out of nowhere to take the top stop. Now I don't mind getting out ranked when someone has worked hard to out rank me but what is frustrating is this site scores terrible across the board on just about every score that is supposed to determine on and off page ranking factors. The only place it outscores is in the link department but the site is so new there is no data available in OSE. The site has 0's and 1's for PA, MR and MT plus the keyword (kitchen remodeling) that it is taking the top spot for scores and F in the SEOMoz on page report card while the page that I optimized for this very same keyword scores an A. Plus this site has zero citations according to Bright Local Data. What Gives? Here is a little bit of data: Keyword: Kitchen Remodeling My Clients website is http://www.tandmkitchens.com Competitors website: http://www.njkitchendesigns.com I'm kicking his butt in every category except Domain Age and inbound link total, his inbound link total is 409 but it's only from 2 domains.
