Nowadays with Google I would just consider most if not all of those bad links non-existent. In other words Google is ignoring links more than "punishing" you now.
You may have ranked temporarily until Google caught up and then just stopped counting the bad links.
However, IF you get a manual action notice in search console, then the site IS being "punished" and you need to get that removed.
If you do not get a manual action notice, I would just make pretend you're starting from scratch, and you have to build your authority from the start. because of this, there's no time period to wait until it's "fixed" - you most likely will not just recover back to ranking where you were, because the site didn't belong there in the first place.
In general, also, I would focus a lot of your SEO efforts not just on links, but lots of other things like great design, great content, building a known company, getting early traffic with paid channels, doing CRO, creating great UX etc.

There are a lot of resources out there
https://backlinko.com/link-building
http://pointblankseo.com/link-building-strategies
https://yoast.com/successful-linkbuilding-strategy/
http://www.linkbuildingbook.com/
Two methods that consistently work for me are Guest Publishing and replying to HAROS, but both NOT in quantity - just very selectively on high authority sites, with high-quality content, building relationships with the publishers and going for the ones that actually driving referrals and brand awareness (not just doing it for the link).

Hi
can you tell me how can i build quality natural links please ???????
-
Hi
thank you very much for your advice
-
It may last up to 6-12 Months. I have experienced the same but retrieved the ranking back after 6 month.
Follow some of the rules to get it back in minimum span of time period: -
- Don't make further link building for the same keyword.
- If possible remove backlinking from some of the third party website for the same keyword.
- Try to build links for the variation of keywords not on exact one.
-
Before closing it I recommend you to continue at least for 6-12 months and in this time create natural quality links, maybe you can save it. Also recommend you to try the Disavow Links Tool, maybe you're luckier than me and it works for you
Good luck!
-
Thank you so much for your information
if the penalty is forever i can close down my page, page is barnwoodmirror.com
and i get banned for my main keyword barnwood mirror

Gigs on Fiverr worked very well until the Penguin Update, since then, they can push you in your ranks, but very probably, you'll get a "penalty" because of the low qualitity of the links or the artificiality of them.
The "penalty" can last months or maybe forever, because probably is not a penalty, probably is the ranking that Google is giving you analyzing the whole profile of your links. So I recommend you to create natural links to counter the bad effects of this links, or at least, to reduce the percentage of this kind of links in your total but creating natural and high-quality links.
Some people could recommend you also to use the Disavow Links Tool from Google to disavow this links, but in my experience, it did never work.
Good Luck!

My website is not ranking for primary keywords in Google
I need help regarding some SEO strategy that need to be implemented to my website http://goo.gl/AiOgu1 . My website is a leading live chat product, daily it receives around 2000 unique visitors. Initially the website was impacted by manual link penalty, I cleaned up lot of backlinks, the website revoked from the penalty some where around June'14. Most of the secondary and longtail Keywords started ranking in Google, but unfortunately, it do not rank well for the primary keywords like (live chat, live chat software, helpdesk etc). Since I have done lot of onsite changes and even revamped the content but till now I dont find any improvement. I am unable to understand where I have got structed.

Rotating content = Google Penalty?
Hi all. We have an ecommerce site which features various product sections. In each section you might have 60 products each displayed neatly in pages of 10. We recently added functionality, so that if a product is out of stock, it will automatically drop that product to the back of the list and bring another in stock one forward. We're just worried that Google will view the same information, repeatedly rotating on the first page of 10 products (the page that ranks) and think we're in some way trying to trick Google into thinking the content is fresh? Does anyone have a throw on this? Is it likely to penalise us? Thank you!!! Ben

Google News sitemap keywords
My company is a Theater news and reviews site. We're building a google news sitemap and Google suggests some recommended keywords we can use with their <keywords>tag: https://support.google.com/news/publisher/answer/116037</keywords> Our writers also tag their stories with relevant keywords. What should we populate the <keywords>tag with?</keywords> We were thinking we'd automatically populate it with author-added tags, in addition to one or more of the recommended ones suggested by Google, such as Theater, Arts, and Culture (all of our articles are related to these topics). Finally, many of our articles are about say, celebrities. An author may tag an article with 'Bryan Cranston,' and when this is the case we're considering also tagging it with the 'Celebrities' tag. Are all or any of these worthwhile?

Google Places Listing Active In Two Seperate Google Places Accounts?
Hi is there any issues with having a google places listing in two seperate google places accounts. For example we have a client who cannot access their old google places account (ex-employee had their login details which they can't get) and want us to take control over the listing. If we click the "is this your listing" manage this page button - and claim the listing, will this transfer the listing to our control? Or will it create a duplicate? Are there any problems having the listing in different separate accounts. Is it a situation in which the last person who manages the listing takes control? And the listing automatically deactivates from the old account? Do all the images remain aswell? Thanks,

Google penalized site--307/302 redirect to new site-- Via intermediate link—New Site Ranking Gone..?
Hi, I have a site that google had placed a manual link penalty on, let’s call this our
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | Robdob2013
company site. We tried and tried to get the penalty removed, and finally gave up and purchased another name. It was our understanding that we could safely use either a 302 or 307 temporary redirect in order to redirect people from our old domain to our new one.. We put this into place several months and everything seemed to be going along well. Several days ago I noticed that our root domain name had dropped for our selected keyword from position 9 to position 65. Upon looking into our GWT under “Links to Your site” , I have found many, many, many links which were pointed to our old google penalized domain name to our new root domain name each of this links had a sub heading “Via this intermediate link -> Our Old Domain Google Penalized Domain Name” In light of all of this going on, I have removed the 307/302 redirect, have brought the
old penalized site back which now consists of a basic “we’ve moved page” which is linked to our new site using a rel=’nofollow’ I am hoping that -1- Our new domain has probably not received a manual penalty and is most likely now
received some sort of algorithmic penalty, and that as these “intermediate links” will soon disappear because I’m no longer doing the 302/307 from the old sight to the new. Do you think this is the case now or that I now have a new manual penalty place on the new
domain name.. I would very much appreciate any comments and/or suggestions as to what I should or can do to get this fixed. I need to still keep the old domain name as this address has already been printed on business cards many, many years ago.. Also on a side note some of the sub pages of the new root domain are still ranking very
well, it’s only the root domain that is now racking awfully.. Thanks,0 -

Worth removing keywords...?
I was just going over a site I manage and noticed it had a load of meta keywords on it. Probably 10-15 keywords per page... Do you think this is harming the site? Is it worth removing them?

Main Keyword penalized. And now?
Hello SEO comunity. In one of the sites that I work, our team won numerous keywords in the first searching results. Unfortunately, on june we lost the most important site keyword. It was a general Word, very disputed, that generated a lot of traffic to us. The problem: it droped from third to fifty position. I’d like your help to identify the possible punishments and than find the solutions. What could happened? Where do we start? Is there any checklist to verify the punishments? What do you suggest to me? PS: We always do a clean job, getting away form the blackhat techniques; We didn’t received any notification from Google; During two year, the keyword was in the first ten positions. Actually, I'm looking for an explanation for what happened to me, to get my top10 again. Thanks
