Http://www.domain.com/services/city or http://www.domain.com/city
-
Hi,
I have a website created on a WordPress Platform. My site is in the "Service" industry and we perform the same service for many different "cities."
My question pertains to the Navigation Bar and SEO.
Is it better to have a "Service" tab on the navigation bar - that has sub navigation that lists all the cities on a drop down menu. When this happens the URL string looks like http://www.domain.com/service/city
The other choice would be to create individual TABS on the NAV bar, by doing this the URL string would look - http://www.domain.com/city .
I could be wrong, but I am assuming the http://www.domain.com/city is better than http://www.domain.com/services/city for SEO purposes,
....if I am correct is there a way to make SUB Menu URLS appear as http://www.domain.com/city ?
Any input as always would be appreciated
best regards,
Jimmy

I'd agree with everyone else on doing 'Services' in the Nav with cities dropping down. However, the URL thing is irrelevant to how you want to do your Nav. It sounds like you're thinking to do the Nav you have to do pages and sub pages -- not the case at all. It's 2013! Wordpress 3.0!
Appearance >> Menus >> Build your menu however you'd like and drop in the pages as desired.

I agree that your second option is probably best from a layout point of view. As for the URLs, you can always change them by changing the permalinks for each city page individually or by setting a general permalink structure without the category (i.e. services) if you want.
Hope this helps.

I would use the following format: .../service-areas/city-name/
I've successfully used this URL structure, but creating these city pages is a ton of work. A lot of companies get this wrong and recycle the same page over and over while switching the city name throughout the page.
Focus on creating content that's going to make users have a positive experience on the site. Use case studies, photos, testimonials, videos, city/town resources that are relevant (if the site is about construction - link to official city/town page with relevant permit info, ect).

What a Toughy! ;]
I think that cluttering up the navigation with a ton of tabs for cities won't make your user experience thrive, nor will it benefit you at all on the SEO side of things.
You're best bet would be to go with your second choice. Create a single link in the navigation for 'Service'. Then on the 'Service' page, create a dropdown which includes your cities.
As far as redirecting/rewriting the URLs from linking goes, for the most part, you CAN do that using your HTACCESS file, and RewriteRule. However, I wouldn't recommend it. It doesn't give you any added benefit.

Question #2: All of my INTERNAL links in OSE are being indexed from http://www.e.com/default.asp, and all my EXTERNAL links are linked to http://www.e.com/ am I getting a fraction of the link juice because of that?????
Hey guys, sorry for the really long question, but it appears that I am losing between 50 and 75 % of my link juice to my internal pages. In OSE all main category links (left sidebar) are being indexed from the URL that includes default.asp, even though NONE of my external links include that: http://www.opensiteexplorer.org/links?site=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.uncommonthread.com%2FSulky-Thread-s%2F78.htm If you check the PA for http://www.uncommonthread.com/: http://www.opensiteexplorer.org/links?site=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.uncommonthread.com%2F You see that it is practically double the PA of http://www.uncommonthread.com/default.asp: http://www.opensiteexplorer.org/links?site=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.uncommonthread.com%2FDefault.asp **Also, non of my internal menu links are being indexed. ** Look at the menu on this page: http://www.uncommonthread.com/Sulky-Thread-s/78.htm and then look at the OSE information here for the "invisible thread" item from the menu on the page above^^^: http://www.opensiteexplorer.org/links?site=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.uncommonthread.com%2FSulky-monofilament-s%2F54.htm Thanks SOOO much! Pre-thumbs and thanks to anyone that can lend me a seconds worth of advice! Thanks again for your time, Tyler A.

Which Hat of SEO (Black/White) Goes with this Green Lace Dress?
Doing some research (honestly) I came across this page: http://www.modcloth.com/th/green-lace-dress That page ranks very well for the phrase "green lace dress" - #2 in Google for me. I'm sure there's a good amount of links coming into it, but on the surface there's only 1 mention of green on the page and 2 mentions of lace. Looking at the code, you can see ModCloth is using the Quick View links below the products to display a more detailed description of the product - wherein lies many more instances of green and lace. So I ask: Which color of SEO hat goes with this green lace dress - Black or White? Is it good SEO to only show the product descriptions when the user initiates the Quick View? Or is it shady SEO to hide so much text from the immediate view of the user? Please select one and explain why.

Unable to set preferred domain, can I verify a site that's already redirected?
I'm in the process of trying to set a preferred domain in webmaster tools -- to set our www version as preferred vs. the non www. version. IT is already redirecting non-www to www, but I get this message when trying to change settings "Part of the process of setting a preferred domain is to verify that you own http://mnn.com/. Please verify http://mnn.com/." While we own the domain, I am not sure how we can have Google access a file at [http://mnn.com/some_file when we are forwarding all requests for non-www to our www site.

Note: The apache rewrite predates me and I'm not sure how / why we have two domains set up, but I'm trying to fix the preferred domain now.Am I able to verify the non version once the redirect is in place.Any ideas??? Help???Thanks!Lisa0 -

Word Press Seo Errors/ Questions
Hi my name is Tina I am new here I hope you guys can help me out. I thought building my new site with Word Press was going to simplify things, however I have a ton of errors, and I am not sure what they are, or how to fix them. I am hoping someone could share with me a solution for these errors. I have 28 rel=canonical errors, I am not sure what this means, I understand it to mean my pages are similar, and this is to set a heirarchy between my pages. Please correct me if I am wrong. If I am correct would this be necessary to add if my main keyword was "widgets" and my home page was optimized for "widgets" and my next page was "blue widgets" and so on. While my pages are similar they are all optimized for different versions of my main keyword some using long tail keywords. Do you know of a plugin that can help solve this problem? Also does anyone have a plugin they recommend for G+ my G+ authorship verification is causing an error as well? I am using Head Space 2 I have used this seo plugin numerous times with great success it has been my favorite seo plugin. However, we have a portfolio that shows our clients websites, and on those pages Head Space will not let me enter a description tag. What plug in do you guys recommend with more control over each page? Another interesting issue is on one of our pages I optimized it for our Canadian clients, and now every page has been listed in Google.ca for the keywords it should have on Google.com. We are listed on Google maps, verified in Google places, and our address is on the site so they know we're from the USA however, the majority of our keywords are only listed in Google.ca. We're on page one for all of them, we are in the top three on most of them so that's not bad, but we want to be listed in Google.com as well. Any suggestions on this?
