Google Analytics Tracking Miscount - Originating Around 5/24
-
Is anyone else experiencing an issue where it seems GA failed to track many of their visitors?
This is why I think it's something on GA's end and not mine (and not natural):
1. No changes were made, site wasn't down, tracking code is correct and is "receiving data"
2. Referral, Direct and Organic traffic all dropped at about the same decline over the same period
*3. Pinterest Analytics shows me being sent over 10 times more traffic every day than GA shows me actually receiving. In the screenshot, Pinterest shows 584 uniques while GA shows 43 for Sunday.
I figure if something was broken, I wouldn't be showing ANY traffic and if it was natural, it wouldn't have happened on the same decline across all traffic mediums and Pinterest Analytics wouldn't be so far off.
I saw a few people mentioning similar things on Google's forums and wanted to ask you guys if anyone noticed any issues?

Google is now involved via their forum. Here's the thread and other complaints, should anyone care to add anything or follow the issue.

Doug,
I appreciate the response and yes I've checked into the up-time, server logs, etc. I can't see any irregularities with the pages being served and we had 98.6% up-time over the past 7 days. Plus we're a start-up company with our faces in here every day and the moment anything on the site doesn't work, one of the team members invariably spots it. I wish that were the answer, as I'd have something concrete to go off of.

Some things to check:
Was your site available during this time? If visitors couldn't access your site then you wouldn't see the referrals. Had a similar problem a while back with intermittent downtime on one of my sites. This would affect all traffic regardless of the source.
Can you check your server log-files. This will show you what pages were being served regardless of any GA tracking issues.

Using Google Reviews for non local business
Hi All, We are deciding on what site is best to capture reviews from customers and I'm just not sure what is the ideal option. We are a SaaS business with multiple offices in different locations but the specific geographies are not really relevant to our customers. Is it worth focusing on google reviews so that when our brand is searched there are plenty of nice shiny stars (plus maybe they can be added into adwords adverts as well...). Search volume for the keywords we don't yet rank for are not massive although still important. Alternatively should we be thinking about something like G2Crowd. None of our competitors are doing anything so there's no real need to our muscle them on a review website and I don't think our end user will visit these sites before buying but we would point to them and say 'hey, look at all these great reviews'. Finally I searched my old company recently who and just under news results were facebook reviews. Maybe that's another option. All advice welcome. All advice appreciated.

Google Custom Search vendors and options
Hi everyone, We're in the process of finding someone who will be able to help set up Google Custom Search on our site and are having some trouble - most agencies we were hoping could help solely focus on Google Search Appliance, a hardware-specific approach that doesn't suit our needs. Specifically, we'd like to replace our current site search engine with Google Custom search, as well as configure it as deeply as possible for the best search experience I'm hoping people could give me some ideas on who might be able to help, or the best places to look. Thanks in advance!

Ideal SEO / Social Media Employee Skillset
I’ve been wondering recently what makes a good SEO / Social Media employee. It seems to me that SEO and Social Media are in the process of merging into a single role. What are your thoughts on the skills that this new world SEO / Social Media employee would need? Or do you think these roles should ideally remain separate and that a “traditional” SEO is more what is needed? My own role has been moving much more towards social media recently and I was wondering if this was a common trend!

Google Product Feeds - New Requirements
We are in the jewelry industry, and for Google product feeds, we list our products under "Apparel & Accessories > Jewelry". As of the new Google feed requirements, they are saying that we have to choose a gender and color for each product that is in the Apparel category. While this makes sense for clothes, it doesn't exactly for jewelry because many items are for both men and women, and there's not always a color associated with each product. I can enter some of these fields manually, but with 5,000+ products, it makes it difficult w/ each update. Anyone have solutions for this? Or a way around it? Can we just include those fields but leave them blank? Any other solutions?
