Any Ideas for SEO opportunities at an electronics convention (CES)?
-
Hello All,
I'm currently helping someone that sells a unique 35mm slide scanner with his digital presence. For a quick explanation, it scans much faster than it's competition and targets photography/scanning businesses. The owner will have part of a booth at CES (large electronics convention) to display the product, and will also have time to network with others within this industry and many others.
At last years convention, there was a good in-person response and a few articles written about the product, but that is about it. I would like to send him to the show with a more digital mindset, so I am wondering if anyone has any ideas for link-bait, promotions, or really anything that will help the website rank higher/get more traffic.
We have tons of content ideas and other ideas that are "online" to drive traffic, but when it comes to a in-person event I am drawing a big old blank (but I feel there must be some opportunities that I am missing). If you have any ideas and would like to share, it would be greatly appreciated!!! Thanks!

Eric, thanks for the question -- I wish I had seen this a lot earlier! But for your client's next event or anyone else who's reading, here's what I would do for an event: public relations. This is the best way to build the client's brand, obtain exposure, and "earn" quality, authoritative links indirectly.
My post at Moz here goes into the basics of PR strategy in a digital context, but I'll add some thoughts here specifically for your context.
1. Goal identification -- I presume, in the end, that the goal is consumer sales of this product?
2. Audience Research -- What types of people would be interested in such a product? What interests them? What is their demographic profile?
3. Positioning and Messaging -- How can you position and brand your company and product in a way that would appeal to that audience? How can you take that general positioning and then create messaging (text, images, and so on) to communicate that positioning?
4. Media List Creation -- Here's where the conference comes in. I'd do the research to answer this question: What news outlets, publications, and blogs both are read by the target audience and will attend the conference? Who are the specific reporters and writers that will be at the conference.
5. Press Release Development & Pitching -- Before the conference, craft news releases, media kits, and more based on your positioning and messaging. Pitch to the journalists beforehand and invite them to the booth for an interview. In some contexts, you may want to grant an exclusive to the biggest outlet on your media list in exchange for a guarantee that they will write about you prominently.
I know that it may seem weird to talk about PR on a site that focuses mainly on online marketing, but I'm personally starting to feel that the "SEO" world is rapidly moving away from keywords and links and more towards just doing traditional "marketing." And part of that involves PR.
I hope this may help!

What impact do affiliate links have on SEO
We commonly reference engineering standards on our site (because half our products are known and searched for by those standard names) and have just signed up as an affiliate to an organisation that sell the standards. Which seems a nice match We're going through and making sure all are no follow now because that seems the general advice - but should we be doing anything else? Yoast says you should mask affiliate links - https://yoast.com/affiliate-links-and-seo/ - but that was from 2010. Matt Cutts is fairly clear on nonfollow - http://www.webpronews.com/heres-what-googles-matt-cutts-says-about-affiliate-links-and-nofollow-2012-06 - but not on whether it affects SERPS Does it? And what is the best way to handle it? This is a typical example of a page where we would have an affiliate link or two. http://www.oakleysteel.co.uk/fake-mill-certificates-en10168

Choosing an Affiliate Software & Link SEO-Value
Hello everyone. I'm looking for recommendations for affiliate software. I'm also curious if there is any truth in the "SEO-value" that some softwares are touting as a benefit. Choosing a Software: This Moz Blog Article says to build it yourself. However, I'm inclined to use an out-of-the-box software for advanced features such as real-time analytics for the affiliate, w-9/1099 processing, etc. MozPerks promotes hasoffers.com which seems overly pricey ($230/month with perk discount) and OMNISTAR who just left me on hold for 10 minutes (and still no anwer from their sales department). So I'm still looking. Any recommendations? SEO-value of Links from Affiliates: Here's an example of what OMNISTAR claims about the SEO value of the way they structure the links from affiliate sites to my site. I hear a variation on this pitch from each software and none of them seem to agree. Does Google want me to clearly tag promotional vs. editorial links? Is there SEO-value in promotional links on affiliate sites or is that a load of bologna? Thanks a bunch!

Will giving a blogger an affiliate url to my site reduce her links' seo value to me?
If a blogger were to write a post about one of my products and link to my product page, would giving her an affiliate url to link to rather than the normal link spoil the seo value of the link? So instead of mysite.com/product-one it would be mysite.com/affiliate/blogger/product-one Google would think... this is a transaction not a vote of confidence?

Casino SEO
I'm considering entering the online casino arena with an affiliate site. These keywords such as 'online roulette', 'online blackjack' are massively competitive with high page and domain authority sites on page one. Does anyone have any experience of this area and is it possible to compete in it? Apparently long tail keywords don't really convert in this area so I may have to go for these highly competitive keywords. Any thoughts?

Can a disapproved adwords ad affect SEO ranking?
Hi No not used adwords before as our onsite SEO was going well - with long tail terms ranking well to product detail pages. On Sunday we tried to set up an adwords ad as it wasgoing to be used for the forthcoming launch of a new product. - - PS Vita I think it is being classified as a bridge page although other price comparison sites such as kelkoo and pricerunner gocompare, travelsupermarket etc all seem to get through and have ads on Google? More interesting though is since the ad was disapproved my organic search results have disappeared? (which have all been white hat) Coincidence perhaps or something more sinister from Google?? One for you Randfish perhaps?
