Switching site from http to https. Should I do entire site?
-
Good morning,
As many of you have read, Google seems to have confirmed that they will give a small boost to sites with SSL certificates this morning. So my question is, does that mean we have to switch our entire site to https? Even simple information pages and blog posts? Or will we get credit for the https boost as long as the sensitive parts of our site have it?
Anybody know? Thanks in advance.

Thanks for all the response. I implemented the switch yesterday, so as of this morning the whole site is for https. We already had an SSL certificate for our payment area, so luckily it was not a cost issue. My concern is primarily the slowdown issue as AltecDesigh mentioned (we only have a mid-range server) and any drop in SERP, since essentially from what I have been reading this is like 301'ing to a new domain.
Here are the steps I went through. Not sure if they are the best option, but there were no step by step instructions yet on google so hopefully this will help people who are planning to implement it themselves.
1) Added the SSL certificate (in case people have not done this yet).
2) Implemented a site wide switch through my .htaccess file using this code:RewriteEngine on
RewriteCond %{HTTPS} off
RewriteRule (.*) https://%{HTTP_HOST}%{REQUEST_URI} [L,R=301]3) Went through the site, page by page with the Google Chrome developers console open. That help me find any errors. The most common ones were including images or external files through their "http" address. Tedious, but easily fixable by simply doing a Replace All on the files and replacing them with a "https".
**4) **Reported the domain change in GWT (which to me seems like an odd thing to have to do)
5) That was it. It took me one day to implement across our site with about 2000 pages. If it even helps a bit, that will be a worthwhile use of my time.I also had to add a plugin to our wordpress blog since for some reason the .htaccess changes were not working for our blog in a subfolder. I will try to come back and update the results in a few weeks so other mozzers can see if this worked for me, or if they should avoid it.
Thanks again for all the feedback, it helped us make the decision. In general I actually like this move of Google (unlike many of the others they have done). Let's see if it makes any difference.

the way I read the information from Google is that if you have all your pages "site wide" redirect too SSL they will factor that into rankings. If you only enable the SSL on sensitive shopping cart pages you will not get credit in Google's eyes.
Its an interesting move, and in general the only "negative" aspect of doing this is site speed. The SSL "handshake" slows down site loading times, but it should be a very small amount. I'm guessing that in the future google will provide some kind of "reward" for sites that do this... possibly a small badge or emblem on the serp page saying something like "secure site".

For those unaware of the news, here is a link to the Wall Street Journal article:

Hi,
I'd advise switching your whole site across.
It's not necessary to do so, but with the way things are going, it's better to be safe than sorry.
Since Google have decided that it is important and will have an impact on rankings, there is no harm doing it on every page. They aren't going to penalise you in any way for doing so.
The change is only affecting 1% of all global search terms at the moment so I wouldn't panic yet. However, if they find this to be a very successful way of ranking, it could rapidly be spread across a much higher percentage.
We are in the process of implementing the change ourselves and are going to do it sitewide.

From: http://www. to https://
Hi all, I am changing my hosting for legal and SEO reasons from http://www to https:// . Now I hear different stories on the redirects: 1: should i try and change my backlinks? 2: internally all links will be 301 redirected at first. Than I want to (manually) change them. It;s within Wordpress so there should be a plugin for this. Tips? 3: Will it affect my rankings and for what period? What I now know that at first it will drop little but eventually you will rank higher than before. Thanks so much in advance! Tymen

Site Link Issues
For several search terms I get site links for the page http://www.waikoloavacationrentals.com/kolea-rentals/kolea-condos/ It makes sense that that page be a site link as it is one of my most used pages, but the problem is google gave it the site link "Kolea 10A". I am having 0 luck making any sense of why that was chosen. It should be something like "Kolea Condos" or something of that nature. Does anyone have any thoughts on where google is coming up with this?

Unnatural links from your site
Hi, 24 February got this penalty message in Google webmaster tool. Google detected a pattern of unnatural, artificial, deceptive, or manipulative outbound links on pages on this site. This may be the result of selling links that pass PageRank or participating in link schemes. Already removed all the link on the blog and sent reconsideration request to Google spam team. But request is rejected. Please help me on this or share link with me on same case. Thanks,

Site not passing page authority....
Hi, This site powertoolworld.co.uk is not passing page authority. In fact every page shows no links unless it has a link from an external source. Originally this site blocked Roger from crawling it but that block was lifted over 6 months ago. I also ran a crawl test last night and it shows the same thing. PA of 1 and no links. I would like to point out that the problem seems to be the same for all sites on the same platform. Which points me in the direction of code. for example there is a display: none tag in the ccs which is used to style where the side bar links are. It's a Blue Park platform. What could be causing the problem? Thanks in advance. EDIT Turns out that blocking the ezooms crawler stopped it from being included.

Why does my site rank so badly
its my turn to ask the interminable question why does my site rank so badly? site is: marriagerecords.org.uk. it was #1 for 'marriage records' on google for about 6 months. then it was 5th to 10th for about 2 months. now it is nowhere for this phrase and anything else, none of the pages I have written rank for anything. I have spent hours upon hours researching original content and I have got some great backlinks from sites like wrexham.gov.uk and somerset.gov.uk (some dont show in opensiteexplorer yet). im guessing im over-optimizing something but i'd love some concrete fixes if anyone could suggest any. thanks, tom

What to include on a sitemap for a huge site?
I have a very large site and I'm not sure what all to include on the sitemap page. We have categories such as items1, items2 and in the items1 category are 100 vendors with their individual vendor pages. Should I link all 100 vendor pages on the sitemap or just the main items1 category?

Is it a good idea to make 301 from a site which you know google has banned certain keywords for to a new site with similar content
Here is a short question re. 301. I read Dovers article on how to move an old domain to a new one. Say you have been a little inexperienced regarding linkbuilding and used some cheap service in the past and you have steadily seen that certain keywords have been depreciating in the SERP - however the PR is still 3 for the domain - now the qustion is should you rediect with a 301 in .htaccess to a new domain when you know that google does not like certain keywords with respect to the old site. Will the doom and gloom carry over to the new site?

Client accidently blocked entire site with robots.txt for a week
Our client was having a design firm do some website development work for them. The work was done on a staging server that was blocked with a robots.txt to prevent duplicate content issues. Unfortunately, when the design firm made the changes live, they also moved over the robots.txt file, which blocked the good, live site from search for a full week. We saw the error (!) as soon as the latest crawl report came in. The error has been corrected, but... Does anyone have any experience with a snafu like this? Any idea how long it will take for the damage to be reversed and the site to get back in the good graces of the search engines? Are there any steps we should take in the meantime that would help to rectify the situation more quickly? Thanks for all of your help.
