Best practice around removing large section of the website
-
We are looking at removing a large section of our website that is getting low/no traffic.
My current thought of removing this would be to delete the pages and add 301 redirects to a similar page within the site that is not being deleted.
This will be removing 400+ pages, does it this make sense? Or should we point them to the homepage?
Finally should we do this in one batch or should we slowly remove the pages over the course of a couple weeks.
Thanks - appreciate the help in understanding the best practice in terms of SEO.

If you're looking to redirect old URLs, sending them to the nearest equivalent page on your site makes sense and would be a good idea.
However, my question would be - Do you actually need to redirect? If the part of your website you're looking to remove is getting little to no traffic as it is, you might be better off letting the pages 404.
404 errors are a natural part of your website - something that Google is happy to admit. If some URLs on your site 404, this fact alone does not hurt you or count against you in Google’s search results.
The reason why I suggest this is that with each redirect you add to your .htaccess file, you add extra code that needs to be 100% correct and you make your file a little bit bigger. The bigger it is, the longer it takes to process and the longer it takes to process, the longer it will take your site to load. Now, for 400+ URLs we're talking small amounts here and likely nothing that will affect your site speed to a degree that it will negatively affect your site - but it can be a long process to put in place and can cause problems if you're inexperienced with redirecting.
I usually follow 2 criteria when asking if I should redirect an old URL.
-
Is it getting traffic from people visiting or entering my site? Check this with your analytics, although it looks as though the answer for you will be no.
-
Does the old URL contain any external backlinks that you would like to preserve. If it does, a 301 redirect will help pass on the link equity.
If the answer to both of these questions is "no", I'm happy to let the URL 404. Over time, it will stop being crawled, reducing any errors you see in Webmaster Tools.
Hope this helps - certainly no harm in redirecting if done correctly (and you can do it in one big go - personal experience with rebranding some big global sites shows this to not be a problem). However, I would ask if you really need to - you're unlikely to harm your site either by not redirecting.

A large number of high spam links are negatively affecting my DA, how do I remove them?
I have identified a large number of very high spam score links to "free wallpaper" coming into my site.

I am running a wordpress blog and would like some advice on the best course of action. There are thousands of spam domains linking to various images on my site with the anchor text "get free high quality hd wallpaper" The webmasters for these domains are not contactable so I am planning to submit a disavow file to google. I am aware these links have negatively affected my DA so would like to do more to remove them. My questions are: will deleting the images they link to help?
As this is on a wordpress site deleting the images will result in a soft 404, should I force a hard 404 to properly break the link?
Will this positively improve my DA?1 -
SEO for a a static content website
Hi everyone, We would like to ask suggestions on how to improve our SEO for our static content help website. With the release of each new version, our company releases a new "help" page, which is created by an authoring system. This is the latest page: http://kilgray.com/memoq/2015/help-en/ I have a couple of questions: 1- The page has an index with many links that open up new subpages with content for users. It is impossible to add title tags to this subpages, as everything is held together by the mother page. So it is really hard to for users to find these subpage information when they are doing a google search. 2- We have previous "help" pages which usually rank better in google search. They also have the same structure (1 page with big index and many subpages) and no metadata. We obviously want the last version to rank better, however, we are afraid exclude them from bots search because the new version is not easy to find. These are some of the previous pages: http://kilgray.com/memoq/2014R2/help-en/ http://kilgray.com/memoq/62/help-en/ I would really appreciate suggestions! Thanks

Toxic Link Removal
Greetings Moz Community: Recently I received an site audit from a MOZ certified SEO firm. The audit concluded that technically the site did not have major problems (unique content, good architecture). But the audit identified a high number of toxic links. Out of 1,300 links approximately 40% were classified as suspicious, 55% as toxic and 5% as healthy. After identifying the specific toxic links, the SEO firm wants to make a Google disavow request, then manually request that the links be removed, and then make final disavow request of Google for the removal of remaining bad links. They believe that they can get about 60% of the bad links removed. Only after the removal process is complete do they think it would be appropriate to start building new links. Is there a risk that this strategy will result in a drop of traffic with so many links removed (even if they are bad)? For me (and I am a novice) it would seem more prudent to build links at the same time that toxic links are being removed. According to the SEO firm, the value of the new links in the eyes of Google would be reduced if there were many toxic links to the site; that this approach would be a waste of resources. While I want to move forward efficiently I absolutely want to avoid a risk of a drop of traffic. I might add that I have not received any messages from Google regarding bad links. But my firm did engage in link building in several instances and our traffic did drop after the Penguin update of April 2012. Also, is there value in having a professional SEO firm remove the links and build new ones? Or is this something I can do on my own? I like the idea of having a pro take care of this, but the costs (Audit, coding, design, content strategy, local SEO, link removal, link building, copywriting) are really adding up. Any thoughts??? THANKS,

Best practices for country homepage
Hi, What are the SEO best practices for redirecting to the correct language site based on geographic location? Right now, we're using a 302 redirect to point users to the right country landing page. User reaches site: domain.com > Server detects location > 302 redirect to domain.com/french We'd like to optimize the site for all languages, but which country gets the SEO rank for the domain.com? Thanks for your help! Roya
