How important is admin-ajax.php?
-
Hi there!
It's been a long time since I last did a technical audit of a site. I've currently playing with the 'fetch as google' tool to find out if we're blocking anything vital.
The site is based on Wordpress, and after a recent hacking incident, a previous SEO moved the login portal from domain.com/wp-admin/ to domain.com/pr3ss/wp-admin/ - to stop people finding it.
Fair enough. But they then updated the robots.txt file to look like this:
User-agent: *
Disallow: /pr3ss/wp-admin/Now, some pages are trying to draw on theme elements like:
http://www.domain.com/pr3ss/wp-admin/admin-ajax.php
http://www.domain.com/pr3ss/wp-content/themes/bestpracticegroup/images/column_wrapper_bg.pngAnd are naturally being blocked (not that this seems to affect the way pages are rendering in Google's eyes)
A good SEO friend of mine has suggested allowing the theme folder, and any sub folders where this becomes an issue.
What are your thoughts? Is it even worth disallowing the /pr3ss/wp-admin/ path?
Cheers guys and gals!
All the best,
John.
I've found a couple of the theme's

On a side note, if you don't want hackers to find the wp-admin folder, you may not want to put the folder in the robots.txt file, as this is publicly accessible and it will make it easy to find (although it may not be an issue for automatic attacks).

Hello John,
I don't understand how blocking /wp-admin/ would keep /wp-content/ from being accessed and rendered by Google.
Google doesn't need to see anything in the /wp-admin/ folder so you should keep it blocked. They do need to see the /wp-content/ folder though.

It is either or really. Its not hard to tell that a site is running wordpress, it is pretty hard to hide. At the same time the admin directory does not have any public facing files for non-logged in users as well. I just use a good Wordpress security plugin, good server practices and leave it at that.

Importance (or lack of) Meta keywords tags and Tags in Drupal
I'm wondering should I put any effort in making Meta Keywords tags for my pages or normal Tags (they're separate in Drupal), since apparently first are not considered by most of search engines, while not sure about normal tags. Obviously SERPS has to determine partial valu of the page by content, thus consider keywords / tags to some extend. What's your opinion on that. Thank you.

Help.. there was a html and php version of my home page on my server for about a week. Now lost all rankings!
Our home page has disappeared from the Google SERPS completely. It won't even show for a search of our business name although other internal pages appear. Site appears in bing for our keywords but not for our business name. When I republished the site I got a message saying there was a php and html version of the site on the home page. I deleted this immediately but was then advised by another staff member that they had also got that message the week before but not done anything about it - so I think it was out there for about a week. Could this be the cause of the ranking drop? We have also done the following: Checked GWM for robots issue, manual action, crawl errors, blocked URLs - all good. Some crawl errors on other pages relating to broken links. All sorted and marked as fixed. Checked for duplicate content - redirected non www version of site to www Checked back links Removed video from home page that was temporarily unavailable when we did fetch and render Added canonical tag Added H1 tag that was missing Coding checked - all looks good There has been no change to the content of the page. We have fetched and rendered and resubmitted for indexing but it's still not coming back in SERPS it did for a short time the other day and then after a couple of days disappeared again Prior to all this it had ranked really well for our most important keywords for years. It's not a new site. The page is indexed as it comes up when doing a site: search. Please can anyone help? Nobody seems to have the answer and we don't know what else to do. The site is NSFW NSFW https://goo.gl/dwA8YB Main keyword sex toy party

Duplicated Content with Index.php
Good Afternoon, My website uses Joomla CMS and has the htaccess rewrite code enabled to ensure the use of search engine friendly URLs (SEF's). While browsing the crawl diagnostics I have found that Moz considers the /index.php URL a duplicate to our root. I will always under the impression that the htaccess rewrite took care of that issue and obviously I would like to address it. I attempted to create a 301 redirect from the index.php URL to the root but ran into an issue when attempting to login to the admin portion of the website as the redirect sent me back to the homepage. I was curious if anyone had advice for handling the index.php duplication issue, specifically with Joomla. Additionally, I have confirmed that in Google Webmasters, under URL parameters, the index.php parameter is set as 'Representative URL'.

How important is the optional <priority>tag in an XML sitemap of your website? Can this help search engines understand the hierarchy of a website?</priority>
Can the <priority>tag be used to tell search engines the hierarchy of a site or should it be used to let search engines know which priority to we want pages to be indexed in?</priority>

ECommerce Products substantially similar but with important differences?
Hi eCommerce gurus, We sell a number of products, electrical in nature where the unit is from a group (sub-model is probably a good description) but each has important different physical properties. An example description is: #1 Clipsal C-Bus Wireless Plug Adapter 1 Channel Leading Edge Dimmer, 3A C-Bus Wireless Plug Adaptors allow mains GPO operated equipment to be controlled as part of a C-Bus Wireless network. The buttons on a C-Bus Wireless Plug Adaptor are able to control a load connected directly to the unit and control loads connected to other C-Bus Wireless units. Also, buttons on C-Bus Wireless Wall Switches can control a load connected to a Plug Adaptor. Each button can be programmed to function as an on/off, dimmer or scene control, as well as a number of other options. The other 2 in this group are: #2 Clipsal C-Bus Wireless Plug Adapter 1 Channel Trailing Edge Dimmer, 2A #3 Clipsal C-Bus Wireless Plug Adapter 1 Channel Relay, 10A but the item description details are really the same as #1. This trips Roger's duplicate content error and so probably Google's as well. I can consolidate into one product with 'options' but then can't list the three products discretely on Google shopping etc, and currently the 'Category' is a much wider 'Wireless Automation Products' which I don't really want to sub-categorise into 'C-Bus Wireless Plug Adapters' with three items in it making it harder for people to find. I can 'Spin' the description but this seem stupid and even more so for other items I have that have 12 different derivations of the same basic product Any Suggestions?

How important are sitemap errors?
If there aren't any crawling / indexing issues with your site, how important do thing sitemap errors are? Do you work to always fix all errors? I know here: http://www.seomoz.org/blog/bings-duane-forrester-on-webmaster-tools-metrics-and-sitemap-quality-thresholds Duane Forrester mentions that sites with many 302's 301's will be punished--does any one know Googe's take on this?

How important is it to fix Server Errors?
I know it is important to fix server errors. We are trying to figure out how important because after our last build we have over 19,646 of them and since google only gives us a 1000 at a time the fastest way to tell them we have fixed them all is to use the api etc which will take time. WE are trying to decide is it more important to fix all these errors right now or focus on other issues and fix these errors when we have time, they are mostly ajax errors. Could this hurt our rankings? Any thoughts would be great!
