What is true impact of permanent magento redirects?
-
Hi everyone,
I got a tough technical SEO question, that is bugging almost everyone in the (ecommerce) company at the moment.
Due to a very "unhealthy" structure of Magento folders, with different countries using same folders in different store views, many of our URL's do change almost on a weekly basis and this is terrifying us.
What happens is, that there is a "-numberx"(ex. /category/product-1.html) added to hundreds of URLs so that we are more and more concerned about the impact on SEO.
I checked the redirect information with the Moz Toolbar and saw, the following information: http://prntscr.com/81v23e
So, even though we had URLs with /category/product-1.html, /category/product-2.html,... the redirect seems to go straight to the last number.
My question?
-Can this be interpreted as one redirect and therefore it is "less" painful from an SEO point of view?
-As we do not have a constant target URL, where does the link juice go if the target page constantly keeps changing (number goes still up)Any advice would be much appreciated.
Thanks

Hi Mirko
I think the root fix, is to have a better URL setup (and not have them changing like that). This is something I think only your developer can answer, since I did not set up the site nor do I have expert hands-on experience in Magento - but I do know in theory, it should be possible. I've never heard of another eCommerce site doing it that way.
If you need further help from the Moz community, let me know and I'll see if someone else can chime in! But I'd definitely try to talk to your developer about it.

Hi Dan,
Apologies for my late reply!
The changing URLs is nothing we actually set up. In fact we try to answer the exact questions you mentioned above:
- Would it be possible to NOT have URLs changing like that, or to put it another way, what is causing it?
- What impact is this permanent redirection having on the SEO performance? (in terms of building page authority)
-
Hmmm ... I think the more important question here is - would it be possible to not have URLs changing like that? I'm not 100% sure I follow the reason why it's set up like that?
Alternatively, could the URL change with ?parameters instead? That way you could set a canonical to point to the main URL and the parameters could achieve the changes you need.

Need advice on redirects
Hi, I have new web addresses for my subpages. None if them have external links. Should I do redirects to the new pages or just leave the old pages in 404 and let google crawl and rank the new page. I am asking because my current pages don’t have a good ranking and I am thinking starting with a clean url is better. Thank you,

Best practice to redirect all 404s?
Hey is it best practice to redirect all 404 pages. For example if the 404 pages had 0 traffic and no links why would you need to redirect that page? Isn't it best practice just to leave as a 404? Cheers.

Redirecting old mobile site
Hi All, Trying to figure out the best option here. I have a website that used to utilize a separate mobile site (m.xyz.com) but now utilizes responsive design. What is the best way to deal with that old mobile site? De-index? 301 redirect back to the main site in the rare case someone finds the m. site somewhere? THanks! Ricky

301 Redirect Showing Up as Thousands Of Backlinks?
Hi Everyone, I'm currently doing quite a large back link audit on my company's website and there's one thing that's bugging me. Our website used to be split into two domains for separate areas of the business but since we have merged them together into one domain and have 301 redirected the old domain the the main one. But now, both GWT and Majestic are telling me that I've got 12,000 backlinks from that domain? This domain didn't even have 12,000 pages when it was live and I only did specific 301 redirects (ie. for specific URL's and not an overall domain level 301 redirect) for about 50 of the URL's with all the rest being redirected to the homepage. Therefore I'm quite confused about why its showing up as so many backlinks - Old redirects I've done don't usually show as a backlink at all. UPDATE: I've got some more info on the specific back links. But now my question is - is having this many backlinks/redirects from a single domain going to be viewed negatively in Google's eyes? I'm currently doing a reconsideration request and would look to try and fix this issue if having so many backlinks from a single domain would be against Google's guidelines. Does anybody have any ideas? Probably somthing very obvious. Thanks! Sam

Global Redirection Rules
SEO Moz Community: After twice changing directory software, I have a ton of 404 errors in Webmaster Tools (over 3,000). I've decided to do 301 redirects but can't manually enter in each 404 URL. How can you redirect pages from the same folder on a mass scale? For example, mysite.com/autos has hundreds of pages associated with it (/autos/ford, toyota etc.) How can you do a 301 that redirects all those pages without manually entering in each URL? Site is built on Wordpress
