YOAST SEO: How to set rel=cannonical tags to the original article post
-
Hi Mozers,
Can anyone tell me how to set the rel="canonical tags via SEO YOAST?
I have an article posted on my blog that was published first on another blog and i need to reference this entry somehow, I have been told to use rel="canonical - if so I would appreciate some insight on how to do this exactly!
Thanks very much in advance

Hi there,
I'll try to break it down so bare with me!
A canonical link is not seen by the user by all accounts they would never know about the original origins of the content. This is fine if you've made a straight up copy or want to keep all link juice to the original source.
A follow link would be at the bottom along the links of "this article originates here link " or how ever you wish to create that point. The user would see this and the pro of this is you keep some more of the link juice whilst also passing some onto the source, this only really works assuming you've made some slight changes to the article e.g. commented on it or followed it up etc. etc.
The choice is of course up to you but there are two options.
Best of luck!

Hi Chris,
Thanks so much for your detailed response, this puts another spin on it for me.
Could you tell me more about your suggestion? I can put the follow link, but I would assume this would give more reference then the canonical would it?
So if I didn't add the canonical and only the follow link how does one know where the article is pointing to without putting the canonical url in? Would I need to credit the article using an anchor text? and adding the follow?
Thanks for your advice

Have you referenced the article or published the whole article? If you've referenced it I'd recommend a follow link more than a canonical link as the canonical would mean all seo benefit goes to the other website (which is fine and well deserved if you've just copied the article) but if you've just referenced it ore even expanded on it I'd reference the blog and all credit to it but not have a canonical link to ensure you maintain some level or link juice on your website.
You can find info on yoast canonical in their knowledge base - http://kb.yoast.com/article/148-canonical-urls-in-wordpress-seo

Hi there
Thank you for your response, I think I have found the settings you are referring to, would you advise no follow or follow? Any other settings you would recommend?

Video SEO for Google
I was wondering what the prime factors were to make something rank for a video on Google. Does anyone have any suggestions? I think that length may be important, but I don't know what the ideal run time is. Hypothetically for local SEO, would I be better off doing a tag like "Mercedes Buffalo NY" or do individual tags of "Mercedes" and "Buffalo" Thanks!

Where Does Blogging Fit Into SEO
I read an article yesterday that said blogging comes under the heading of social media, which is at the top of the so called SEO pyramid. I have taken this to mean less time should be spent in social media compared to other areas of SEO. Yet content creation was at the bottom of the pyramid (more time allocation here). Isn't blogging part of content creation? I would have thought there is a limit to what can be done for service/product & landing pages. Whereas blogs are a great way to produce more unique content for a website. Any clarification would be appreciated. Thanks - Christina

Mobile SEO
Hey, In the following article, Google recommended using a 301 redirect but doesn't specify why. http://googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.co.uk/2011/02/making-websites-mobile-friendly.html I assume this is to pass over link equity to the relevant mobile/desktop variation. Can anyone confirm this? Also is there any other reason? Again assuming this would keep the correct URLs in the correct index? Anything else anyone can chip in would be great. Thanks

Original Site content was used for submission to article directories
I had a communication problem with my writer and she used original unspun content and posted it to Unique Article Wizard. So all UAW does is take each paragraph and mix them up. So I searched a sentence on my site where the content came from and got back a bunch of returns for that sentence. My site wasn't the first result returned. I"m wondering how bad that is going to be for me. The links from UAW are going back to an anchor layer that then links back to this site. Can anyone tell me if I need to rewrite the content on the original site? That is the only way I can think to make that not an issue. Thanks

Seo for Q&A site
Hi, I am working on a newly launched Q&A site. We have very few questions and users right now and very very low seo traffic. In order to increase the number of users and seo traffic we intend to create a number of pages containing potential questions. Each page would have the following structure: Question. Ex: "What are the top wholesale suppliers of coffee in China?" Some content. Ex: Are you looking for wholesale suppliers of coffee in China? Post your question here? Question form Some additional content So there would be a page for wholesale suppliers of coffee for every country. We would publish the pages gradually and the content would be unique but yet similar (ex: only the Country changes). What do you think about this approach? Is it a good idea or can it be dangerous? We don't want to incur in any kind of penalization, we just want to give the possibility to people who are looking for specific information to find us and be able to post the request on our website.
