Pop-ups ok for SEO?

Are unintrusive pop-ups okay or is Google likely to impose a black mark?
I'm not talking about making people stay on the site, just talking about little one corner pop-up for a special offer.
An example would be an embedded live chat pop-up.
Have you had any experience?

Agreed. No SEO ding directly, but as donford said, be careful that you don't mess up UX. One thing to be aware of. If you use a 3rd party to host the pop-up, it can slow down the site if the script blocks the downloading of other assets on your page. You could then have a page speed issue that can indirectly cause issues with SEO.

Hi,
They shouldn't hurt the rankings directly. However, the user experience from my point of view would be horrible. No matter how tasteful they are done, they always annoy me. I just finished up writing a SEO article this morning, and I remember vividly advising against this.

Does my website builder/host have an effect on my SEO?
My SEO ranking has been suffering over the last year despite all my efforts. Do you think my website builder/host could negatively effect my SEO? I'm using something called jigsy. I cant:
-edit H1 and H2 tags on individual pages...the same ones are plastered throughout the site as part of a "theme"
-Do any link cannonicalization, which Moz Pro is marking me with 282 critical issues for.
-and I've had numerous times I've had to search out HTML code to paste into my page because they're missing something. ...I may have just answered my question myself, but I'm wondering how much of a problem all of this might be for my SEO? Hi Everyone - I have a potential client who is seeking SEO for a site that contains about 95% of content only accessible through user authentication . Does anyone have tips for getting this indexed without having to open it up to the public? 2012 SEO/Customer Experience Goals
