Are correcting missing meta descrption tags a good use of time?
-
My modest website (shew-design.com) has pulled up nearly sixty crawl errors. Almost all of them are missing meta description tags. One friend who knows SEO better than me says that adding meta tags to EVERY page is not a good use of time. My site is available at shew-design.com
I'm just getting started in being serious about applying SEO to our site and I want to make sure I'm making the best use of my time.
The other error I'm getting are duplicate page names within different directories (e.g. getting started (for branding), getting started (for web). Is this a huge priority?
Would welcome your feedback.

It does. Thanks very much, Jared!

I'll give a two pronged answer: practical for your situation, and best practices.
Practical - No, it's not a huge priority, especially since you're just starting to get serious. It might be wise in your situation to focus on the other high impact changes that can be made in a short amount of time. The meta descriptions themselves don't help increase a shred of rank.
Best practice - Yes, you should definitely plan some time to fix these. Meta descriptions can be a powerful force for increasing click through rate from search results. So while there's not a direct SEO benefit, there's certainly enough reason to make time (eventually) to get all your meta descriptions in tip-top shape.
Hope that helps Eric!

Shopify Canonicals for Tagged Filters
I've been researching this topic endlessly and thought I had arrived at a solution but Screaming Frog indicates my solution was not successful. Problem: I used tags to filter my collections pages. The result, I discovered, was the creation of dozens and dozens, maybe hundreds, of additional collection URLs for each possible permutation of tag filters. I would like to make the collection page URL, with no tag filters, the canonical. Proposed Solution: I found the following code described somewhere as the solution: {% if template contains 'collection' and current_tags %} {% else %} {% endif %} However, I crawled my site with Screaming Frog and found that the canonical link element is still listed as the URL with the tags included. The crawler does recognizes the "noindex" instruction. Any ideas on what the best move is here?

Tagging Assets
As I am finding ways to integrate keyword diversity into my key landing pages, I want to start adding META information to content such as images and videos. 1. Any blog posts on best practices you can send me to? 2. Can I add META information to iFrames? Or do i have to rely on the tags added within Vimeo & You Tube? Thank you again

Using Sitemap Generator - Good/Bad?
Hi all I recently purchased the full licence of XML Sitemap Generator (http://www.xml-sitemaps.com/standalone-google-sitemap-generator.html) but have yet used it. The idea behind this is that I can deploy the package on each large e-commerce website I build and the sitemap will be generated as often as I set it be and the search engines will also be pinged automatically to inform them of the update. No more manual XML sitemap creation for me! Now it sounds great but I do not know enough about pinging search engines with XML sitemap updates on a regular basis and if this is a good or bad thing? Can it have any detrimental effect when the sitemap is changing (potentially) every day with new URLs for products being added to the site? Any thoughts or optinions would be greatly appreciated. Long Meta Descriptions
I want to create a template for Meta titles, descriptions and keywords on my website for old news and minor pages in order to get some long tail traffic from them. The only template I can think to use for the descriptions takes the first sentence of the news article (which often if above 160 characters). Since these are minor pages, how big of a problem is that? Thanks!

Google showing former meta tags in search results inspite of new tags being crawled by it
I had changed the meta tags for a site www.aztexsodablast.com.au about a month back and Google has also crawled those new tags but in search results when I search for the term 'Aztex Sodablast' it is continuing to show the old tags while on the site, the new tags are being displayed. What may be the issue and how could I correct the problem?
