Homepage not ranking for branded searches after Google penalty removal
-
Hi all,
A site I work on was hit with a manual action penalty some time ago for spammy links built by a former SEO agency. It was a partial match penalty so only affected some pages - most likely the homepage.
We carried out a lot of work cleaning up links and disavowed suspicious links which we couldn't get removed. Again, most of these were to the homepage. The disavow file was uploaded to Google last Friday and our penalty was lifted this Tuesday. Since uploading the disavow file, our homepage does not show up at all for branded searches. I've carried out the obvious checks - robots.txt, making sure we're not accidentally noindexing the page or doing anything funky with canonicals etc and it's all good.
Have any of you guys had a similar experience? I'm thinking Google simply needs time to catch up due to all the links we've disavowed and sitting tight is the best option but could do with some reassurance!
Any past experiences or advice on what I might be missing would be great.
Thanks in advance,
Brendan.

I have a few thoughts for you.
First, it may take time. In many cases when a penalty is lifted it can take 1-2 weeks to see the benefits of the penalty being lifted.
Second, this is probably obvious, but is the brand name relatively unique? In other words, if your brand is a common word or a keyword, then you may not see a return to good rankings. Google may decide that when people search for that word they're not necessarily looking for your brand.
Next, it's possible that the site is trapped under Penguin and you need to wait till Penguin updates. With that said, Penguin doesn't usually affect brand terms too heavily, unless, again, the brand is a common keyword.
" Since uploading the disavow file, our homepage does not show up at all for branded searches. " - This doesn't sound normal to me. You should not lose rankings after filing a disavow unless you have been extremely aggressive and disavowed really good links. Even then, it takes a good amount of time for the sites in your disavow to be recrawled and the disavow applied. So, if your drop happened shortly after filing the disavow it could be coincidental. There have been a LOT of changes in the SERPS recently and it may be that your site is one of the many that is seeing wild swings.
With all of that said, there are cases where Google makes mistakes. I've had a few cases where I just couldn't figure out why a site couldn't rank for their brand name. Here's an example: https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!topic/webmasters/VFnodOiYXqc;context-place=topicsearchin/webmasters/pedorthic. In that case we were able to get a Google employee's ear and magically, after not ranking for months, the brand terms were back within 24 hours. But, this type of situation is likely quite rare.
I am guessing that in your case, you need to give it a bit more time.
Best of luck!

Hi Brendan,
Just as it can take a while to rank a brand new domain, it will take some time to recover from the penalty. The best thing you could be doing is working to get some good links pointing to the homepage to help outweigh those junk links.

Google says 404s don't cause ranking drops, but what about a lot of them
Hello, According to Google here, 404s don't cause rankings to go down. Our rankings are going down and we have about 50 or so 404s (though some may have been deindexed by now). We have about 300 main products and 9000 pages in general on this Ecommerce site. There's no link equity gained by 301 redirecting the 404s. A custom 404 page has been made linking to the home page. There's nothing linking to the pages that are 404s Provided that no more 404s are created, can I just ignore them and find the real reason our rankings are going down?

How will Google deal with the crosslinks for my multiple domain site
Hi, I can't find any good answer to this question so I thought, why not ask Moz.com ;-)! I have a site, let's call it webshop.xx For a few languages/markets, Deutsch, Dutch & Belgian, English, French. I use a different TLD with a different IP for each of these languages, so I'll end up with: webshop.de, webshop.nl, webshop.be, webshop.co.uk, webshop.com & webshop.fr They all link to eachother and every subpage that is translated from the other site gets a link as well from the other languages, so: webshop.com/stuff links to webshop.de/stuff My main website, webshop.com gets links from every other of these domain which Open Site Explorer as well as Majestic SEO sees as an external link. (this is happening) My question. How will Google deal in the long-run with the crosslinks coming from these domains? some guesses I made: I get full external links juice (content is translated so unique?) I get a bit of the juice of an external link They are actually seen as internal links I'll get a penalty Thanks in advance guys!!!

Detective needed to investigate a mystery lack of ranking
My URL is: www.graduate-jobs.com/graduate-schemesAfter ranking on page 1 for the search term 'graduate schemes' for over 4 months, the page then disappeared completely from the SERPS for over 6. I've been assured it isn't a Penguin/ Panda problem, as this is the only page on our site that has seen this sort of drop. When checking backlink profiles of the ranking pages, our page is as strong if not stronger and it receives a good amount of traffic with decent user metrics. If anyone could take a look at the page and have a guess at why it isn't moving anywhere, it would be really appreciated.Thanks.

Starting fresh on a new url after serious Penguin update down rank
Hi friends My site www.acupunctureclinicvictoriabc.com was recently hit by the penguin update and i dropped to page 5 of local searchs for my key words. A while back I had some bad link building done and now paying for it:( I thought the disavow tool (used 4 months ago) would deal with this issue but apparently not The current url is feeling like a lost cause. My question is if I start fresh on a new url, can I use my old content (or even clone the site and move it to a new url) without being punished for duplicate content on the new site? Any recommendations for starting fresh? I really appreciate any thoughts on this matter, as I am feeling a bit lost and bummed about this issue thanks!

My ranking dropped 3 pages on 18 november 2012
Hi There my site ranking dropped suddenly today for my main keywords such as security companies in london and security services in london from first page to 4th-5th page. these keywords were ranked on homepage http://www.armstrongsecurity.co.uk/ other keywords from some internal pages, such as this one http://www.armstrongsecurity.co.uk/security-services/event-security-london.html theygot hit slightly and went couple of listings down the road for event security london, event security companies london as well. same slight hitting happened on this page for main keywords http://www.armstrongsecurity.co.uk/bodyguard-for-hire-london.html can anyone help me, how to get the rankings back? my site authority is around 60 which is far better than most sites ranking higher than me now. these are some problems that i understand so far. keyword rich anchor text link profile for my main keywords over optimised pages let me know if anything you might find suspicious on my site that i can fix either on site or in my link profile. looking forward to your help. thanks gill

How do you remove unwanted links, built by your previous SEO company?
We dropped significantly (from page 1 for 4 keywords...to ranking over 75 for all) after the Penguin update. I understand trustworthy content and links (along with site structure) are the big reasons for staying strong through the update...and those sites that did these things wrong were penalized. In efforts to gain Google's trust again, we are checking into our site structure and making sure to produce fresh and relevant content on our site and social media channels on a weekly basis. But how do we remove links that were built by our SEO company, those of which could be untrustworthy/irrelevant sites with low site rankings? Try to email the webmaster of that site (using data from Open Site Explorer)?
