Status Codes - Deleted URLs
-
Hi
I have a dev team 'cleaning' their database and from what I can tell deleting old URL's - which they say are not in use.
I don't have much visibility on how our URLs are managed in the back end of the site, but my concern is these URLs should never be deleted, they should have a 301, 404 or 410.
This includes product pages no longer available and category pages - my concern is losing authority.
Am I worrying over nothing or is this a big issue?
-
Thanks for the reply!
Yes, the issue is I have no visibility & it's getting the buy in for the product URLs to be managed to provide a similar SKU to redirect to, as this would be quite manual.
The pages won't be linked from anywhere on the site now, so is this even still an issue?
I just didn't think it looked to good to Google that pages keep getting deleted?

Nailed it.

I can definitely see where you are coming from. Personally if it is a product which has expired I would try and 301 to a similar product, provide a 404 or if possible keep the page active with a message about the product no longer being in stock with some cross sells for similar products if it has expired.
The issue is how many of these pages are still indexed and now point to nothing if no 404 is set up. I think it is about managing user expectation when they land, would you rather they had something to action or nothing but an error.
Also why delete and not simply disable, what happens if the product comes back in stock or a trade agreement is reignited etc.

Multi URL treated as one?
I had previous asked this question, where the issue turned out to be that I didn't have all the URLs in Google Search console. Whoops! So I have added 4 properties that are really all the same property: https:// https://www http:// http://www I have added all of these. This has raised a few more questions: Can I get Google Search Console to treat these (and even group these together) to show as one property? Right now they are all listed separately. I know in Site Settings you can set a Preferred Site. Even so, they show as separate sites with data separately. Can I merge these? What about Moz? Should I do something similar to see traffic for each of these in Moz? It looks like we are missing a ton of info. Does Moz get this from GSC automatically? What about sitemaps? Can I fix this in sitemaps? Do I need separate sitemaps for each property?

How careful do you need to be about changes to readable URLs?
We are moving to Sitecore where the standard out the box is that if you change page title it amends the URL as well. I am worried that this will lead to SEO issues and am considering whether we need to get it locked down so that if the page title is amended (only in a minor way) it does not also change the URL. I have never worked with readable URLs before - what are the implications of the URL not exactly matching the wording of the page title?

Pretty URLs... do they matter?
Given the following urls: example.com/warriors/ninjas/ example.com/warriors/ninjas/cid=WRS-NIN01 Is there any difference from an SEO perspective? Aesthetically the 2nd bugs me but that's not a statistical difference. Thank you

URL blocked
Hi there, I have recently noticed that we have a link from an authoritative website, however when I looked at the code, it looked like this: <a <span="">href</a><a <span="">="http://www.mydomain.com/" title="blocked::http://www.mydomain.com/">keyword</a> You will notice that in the code there is 'blocked::' What is this? has it the same effect as a nofollow tag? Thanks for any help
