My site just dropped significant!
-
Just noticed that my website onlinecasting.co.za just dropped 50+ places on basically all the keywords I'm following.
I can also see, that today there almost havent been any new sign-ups so something happened.
I didnt change anything. On issue, which might have something to do with it, is that I own several "copies" of the same site, just in different countries (domains). I host the websites myself, and they are all on the same server. The text and design in the same in some of the countries except that "jobs" are unique for the country.
I also have:
onlinecasting.ae (english)
onlinecasting.sg (english)
onlinecasting.mx
and more comingSo, could that be the reason, that google somehow now decided, that it wont accept the "allmost same site"?

Chris and Mike both make great points!
If you choose to consolidating under one domain, consider creating geo-targeted pages for each of the countries/service areas you want to make sure you're ranking for. The content can be similar to a point, but that way your website will still target the areas you care about.
Chris' point about the challenges of authority with multiple sites raises a great point, too. Get authority up through link building, social campaigns, etc, and you could see some positive changes.

Agree with Chris on this for sure. I'd also add that you should use relevant hreflang tags to differentiate between the sites (or subfolders if consolidating into a single domain).
ccTLDs are fine if done right, but be sure that there's a valid reason (targeting a country) and use hreflang. Remember that you can't specific a country on it's own, you can either specify:
- A language on it's own
- A language AND a country
- NOT a country on it's own.
So, if you do stick with the ccTLD tactic, add the relevant rel alternate hreflang tags to all sites (including each having it's own self-pointing tag).
Or, as Chris mentions, merge into one gTLD and then I'd use subfolders for the country targeting (either ccTLD or gTLD option is valid, so long as it's done well and for the right reasons)
Hope this helps?

I'd expect that content duplication is going to be a big part of it.
We know that you don't get "penalised" for duplicate content but you can expect a slide in rankings if the duplication is significant enough which I think it is in this case tbh.
There's also the link profiles to consider. From what I can see, some domains have 0 backlinks and others have a handful of low quality ones with little to no relevance to what you do.
In your shoes, I'd have to consider consolidating these sites into a single domain to remove duplication and give a single link profile to build. Turning the current 4 domains (and the "more coming"!) into strong sites that are likely to perform well in the SERPs would take a significant amount of time and effort.
It's true there are some benefits to having a specific site on the relevant TLD for each location but each site should be treated as a whole new campaign and so quadrupling the number of domains you're trying to rank also means quadruple the workload. 4x the campaign planning, 4x the unique content, 4x the link building effort etc.

Scraped site, hijacked searches for business name.
Hello, I have a site that was scraped (possibly by a competitor's seo company), who then built links to the duplicate site. When people do a search for the name of the business the scraped site is all that comes up along with the usual third-party sites. They seem to take the site down and put it back up every couple of weeks to maintain the rankings in Google. Has anyone ever dealt with something like this? Any advice or recommendations would be appreciated. Search: LIC Dental Associates Scraped site: old-farmshow.net Legit site: licdentalassociates.com Thanks, Emery

Duplicate content - multiple sites hosted on same server with same IP address
We have three sites hosted on the same server with the same IP address. For SEO (to avoid duplicate content) reasons we need to redirect the IP address to the site - but there are three different sites. If we use the "rel canonical" code on the websites, these codes will be duplicates too, as the websites are mirrored versions of the sites with IP address, e.g. www.domainname.com/product-page and 23.34.45.99/product-page. What's the best ways to solve these duplicate content issues in this case? Many thanks!

The use of a ghost site for SEO purposes
Hi Guys, Have just taken on a new client (.co.uk domain) and during our research have identified they also have a .com domain which is a replica of the existing site but all links lead to the .co.uk domain. As a result of this, the .com replica is pushing 5,000,000+ links to the .co.uk site. After speaking to the client, it appears they were approached by a company who said that they could get the .com site ranking for local search queries and then push all that traffic to .co.uk. From analytics we can see that very little referrer traffic is coming from the .com. It sounds remarkably dodgy to us - surely the duplicate site is an issue anyway for obvious reasons, these links could also be deemed as being created for SEO gain? Does anyone have any experience of this as a tactic? Thanks, Dan

Site Scraping and Canonical Tags
Hi, So I recently found a site (actually just one page) that has scraped my homepage. All the links to my site have been removed except the canonical tag, should this be disavowed through WMT or reported through WMT's Spam Report? Thanks in advance for any feedback.

Site architecture change - +30,000 404's in GWT
So recently we decided to change the URL structure of our online e-commerce catalogue - to make it easier to maintain in the future. But since the change, we have (partially expected) +30K 404's in GWT - when we did the change, I was doing 301 redirects from our Apache server logs but it's just escalated. Should I be concerned of "plugging" these 404's, by either removing them via URL removal tool or carry on doing 301 redirections? It's quite labour intensive - no incoming links to most of these URL's, so is there any point? Thanks, Ben

Satelite sites
Hi there I want to drive traffic to one of our eCommerce sites by building satelite sites that focus on our chosen niche longtail keywords. so, 'where can i buy fake snow' wherecanibutfakesnow.com The problem is for other keywords ie. fake 'ice cubes', the com and co.uk are already taken. So, my question is, should i settle for a .net / .biz / .eu etc. or choose the next best keyword/phrase that i can secure a .com/.co.uk top level domain name for? Many thanks, Ben

Switching existing website to a Wordpress Site and afraid of losing top spot
I am going to be switching my current site from a standard html site to a wordpress site. I'm kind of paranoid of losing my top spot for the keyterms. If I keep the content the same, and keep the same amount of image alt tags, the same anchor text etc, nothing should change right? Grateful for any advice. Thanks Will

Such as, if i wrote a ymoz, and suddenly the articles is accepted, will the link to our site coming out of that Article Post increased our SEO Standing? Another example would be http://active.tutsplus.com , yesterday i have successfully pitched a tutorial idea, and they told me to write it so that they can published it , and they also promised that i will be able to put my site link (dofollow) ... But will these link be a Good BackLink that will increase our site's SEO Standing? The last one is exactly the same link , but this time coming from a News Site , such as http://teknologi.kompasiana.com/internet/2011/06/09/website-full-flash-dengan-inovasi-hebat-karya-indonesia/ , in this article (kompasiana is a very wellknown site news in Indonesia, in fact KOMPAS is the biggest newspaper firm in Indonesia) , our site is being featured , there is a link coming out of that article (DOFOLLOW), but will that link make our site much more SEO Friendly? Again please enlighten me 🙂
