Is it possible to direct HTTP www 301 to HTTPS non www?
-
I have a question that has been stumping me and if someone could help I would gladly buy your coffee for a month.
I have a website that used to be www and http a year or two ago. Now it is https and non www. A lot of my older links point to the www and http version of my site. This results in two 301 redirects.
I.e.
A link on another site to my site points to http://www.mysite.com
The network waterfall shows:
http://www.mysite.com 301 -> http://mysite.com
http://mysite.com 301 -> https://mysite.com
https://mysite.com (finally)
**2 part question. **
**--Do you think that this two 301 redirect hop would affect SEO performance? I can see it did affect page authority through Moz. **
--Is there away around this? I.e. to redirect http:// AND http://www directly to https:// with no hops in between.
Thank you!

Hello,
With Wordpress I believe you can just add it under all that code, like below. After you make the changes, I would suggest opening a private browser window or clearing your cache and make sure the site, pages and redirects are coming up as intended, since .htaccess changes can sometimes be a bit hairy and cause the site to white screen or cause infinite loops.
BEGIN WordPress
RewriteEngine On
RewriteBase /
RewriteRule ^index.php$ - [L]
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
RewriteRule . /index.php [L]END WordPress
RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{HTTPS} !^on$
RewriteRule (.*) https://example.com/$1 [R=301,L]RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^www.example.com [NC]
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://example.com/$1 [L,R=301] -
Thank you so much for your quick answer. I made it my mission to become a DNS, htaccess and redirect expert over the next two weeks as it has been my Achilles heel for far too long. How would you write this with an htaccess file hosted in a on a server that's running Wordpress (WP Engine specifically)?
This is the default WP htaccess file:
# BEGIN WordPress <ifmodule mod_rewrite.c="">RewriteEngine On RewriteBase / RewriteRule ^index\.php$ - [L] RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d RewriteRule . /index.php [L]</ifmodule> # END WordPress

Hello,
I have not heard of this kind of setup affecting SEO performance, but I could be wrong. Even if you didn't have the old URL structure and incoming links, I would still have these redirects to ensure all the current site links are only accessible via one type of URL, https, non-www.
These are the two redirects I have used in my .htaccess file to achieve what you are looking for. In the network I only see as one redirect listed though, not two. Hope this helps.
RewriteCond %{HTTPS} !^on$
RewriteRule (.*) https://example.com/$1 [R=301,L]RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^www.example.com [NC]
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://example.com/$1 [L,R=301] -
You should be able to change this in your .htaccess file.
RewriteEngineOn
RewriteCond%{SERVER_PORT}80
RewriteRule^(.*)$https://yourdomain.com/$1 [R=301,L]

Preserve domain on 301 redirect?
We have a domain solely used for print advertising that does a 301 redirect to a landing page (a department home page) on our "real" domain that is indexed on Google. Example: www.bmwrepairs.com redirects to www.repairshop.com/bmwrepairs. Is there a way to do a 301 redirect so that when they get redirected, the URL in the browser address bar remains www.bmwrepairs.com?

301 Redirects... Redirect all content at once or in increments?
Hello, I have been reading a lot about site migration and 301s and sometimes get confused with conflicting suggestions from different sources... So, in a site migration. Should I 301 redirect all old URLs to the news at once or little by little? I've see this Google handout that suggests doing it all at once (minute 13)

HTTPS website migration and internal links
Hey Moz! I read Moz's guide on migrating websites from http to https, and it seems changing all relative internal links to absolute https is recommended (we currently use relative internal links). But is doing this absolutely necessary if we will already have a redirect in our .htaccess file forcing all http pages to https? Changing all of our internal links to absolute https will be very time consuming, and I'd like to hear your thoughts as to whether it's absolutely recommended/necessary; and if so, why? Thanks!

I have an authority site with 90K visits per month. Now I have to change from non www to www. Will incur in any SEO issues while doing that? Could you please advice me on the best steps to follow to do this? Thank you very much!
Because I want to increase site speed, Siteground (my hosting) suggested I use Cloudflare Plus which needs my site to have www in order to work. I'm also using a cloud hosting. Im a bit scared of doing this, and thus decided to come to the community. I used MOZ for over 6 months now and love the tool. Please help me make the best possible decisions and what steps to follow. It would be much appreciated. Thank you!

Push for site-wide https, but all pages in index are http. Should I fight the tide?
Hi there, First Q&A question 🙂 So I understand the problems caused by having a few secure pages on a site. A few links to the https version a page and you have duplicate content issues. While there are several posts here at SEOmoz that talk about the different ways of dealing with this issue with respect to secure pages, the majority of this content assumes that the goal of the SEO is to make sure no duplicate https pages end up in the index. The posts also suggest that https should only used on log in pages, contact forms, shopping carts, etc." That's the root of my problem. I'm facing the prospect of switching to https across an entire site. In the light of other https related content I've read, this might seem unecessary or overkill, but there's a vaild reason behind it. I work for a certificate authority. A company that issues SSL certificates, the cryptographic files that make the https protocol work. So there's an obvious need our site to "appear" protected, even if no sensitive data is being moved through the pages. The stronger push, however, stems from our membership of the Online Trust Alliance. https://otalliance.org/ Essentially, in the parts of the internet that deal with SSL and security, there's a push for all sites to utilize HSTS Headers and force sitewide https. Paypal and Bank of America are leading the way in this intiative, and other large retailers/banks/etc. will no doubt follow suit. Regardless of what you feel about all that, the reality is that we're looking at future that involves more privacy protection, more SSL, and more https. The bottom line for me is; I have a site of ~800 pages that I will need to switch to https. I'm finding it difficult to map the tips and tricks for keeping the odd pesky https page out of the index, to what amounts to a sitewide migratiion. So, here are a few general questions. What are the major considerations for such a switch? Are there any less obvious pitfalls lurking? Should I even consider trying to maintain an index of http pages, or should I start work on replacing (or have googlebot replace) the old pages with https versions? Is that something that can be done with canonicalization? or would something at the server level be necessary? How is that going to affect my page authority in general? What obvious questions am I not asking? Sorry to be so longwinded, but this is a tricky one for me, and I want to be sure I'm giving as much pertinent information as possible. Any input will be very much appreciated. Thanks, Dennis
