ALT tags - How important are they?
-
I realise ALT tags are important from an accessibility perspective but in terms of organic search, do they carry much value?
I have a big site and it doesn't look like ALT tags have been added generally, it would be a massive job to fix and I'm just trying to weigh up what to concentrate on first.
Does anybody have any real life experience?

Hi seoman10 answering your question
They are important, but I think they are not even in the TOP 20 of the priorities when you rank a site, for me the most iportant factor are
- Content
- Backlinks
- Mobile-First User Experience
- Other Technical Factors
To support my point of view you can check the 200 ranking factors from backlinko and Image Optimization is in the 24 position.
"24. Image Optimization: Images on-page send search engines important relevancy signals through their file name, alt text, title, description and caption."
Optimize the ALT tags can give you a better score but will not give thousands of visitors. In the other hand a good link mixed with agreat content can give you that traffic.
When you are making an onpage optimization is really good idea to put your main keywords or releated keywords in the images and those ALT tags must be related to the topic of your article but is very usual that you will have a lot of images without ALT tag, such as icons, ads, backgrounds and Im sure that they will not hurt your SEO

Optimization expert suggesting we add Canonical tag to every page on site
Hi guys, We're currently launching a new page, and we have an optimization and technical SEO expert (highly rated on Upwork, very intelligent, has solved complicated issues in the past and improved our Core Web Vitals greatly) suggesting we put canonical tags on every page of site, pointing to itself (other than the case of where canonicals should point to other page, we have those listed separately. Do you guys see a benefit to this? Could it harm us? He says large retailers do this, couldn't quite glean the benefit from it though. Current site ranks well and isn't set up like this. Any insight would be much appreciated! Thanks!

How important is AMP?
I have a client site with 200+ landing pages. We implemented AMP and many of the pages lost a lot of key elements including, sidebars, Calls to Action and footers. Our developer claims that we need to customize each of the 200+ pages for AMP to show those things (don't 100% believe him). So the questions are: a. How important is AMP? if we dump AMP will that hurt us? The site is already mobile friendly and clean, loads fast.

Do you need a canonical tag for search and filter pages?
Hi Moz Community, We've been implementing new canonical tags for our category pages but I have a question about pages that are found via search and our filtering options. Would we still need a canonical tag for pages that show up in search + a filter option if it only lists one page of items? Example below. www.uncommongoods.com/search.html/find/?q=dog&exclusive=1 Thanks!

Changing title tags, do we need 301 redirects
I found many duplicate title tags and I'm in the process of changing it Do I need 301 redirects in place when I switch it? I am only changing the title tag. Also, we are switching over to a new site very soon, I am worried that we might be using too many 301 redirect "hops" because we are doing a lot of optimization as well. (video from matt cutts describing 301 redirects and hops: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r1lVPrYoBkA. Does anyone have any experience in doing too many redirect hops that it affected your rankings? Any good ideas to avoid this?

Should I Block Tag, Category, Author Pages
Just finished reviewing the first crawl of my first SEOmoz campaign for a site that I am working on. The site I"m working on uses Wordpress as a CMS, and most if not all of the warnings and notices have to do with author, category, and tag pages. Should I block these from being indexed? Why or why not?
