Medical terms and keyword monthly search ranges
-
I have a question with regards to the monthly search ranges. I read your information on how the range is calculated but it does not explain the following.
Google AU comparison for "hives" and "urticaria". The range give is 11.5-30.3K per month for both terms. This is highly unusual because we know that people use hives more than urticaria when searching for the same disease.
Interesting this is the only medical term that behaves like this and want to understand the reason why.

Thanks Ed for the UK and US analysis.
Its very strange as it only affects Australia. Moz outputs:
11.5-30.3K hives with difficulty at 57
11.5-30.3K urticaria with difficulty at 40
So I guess Moz is considering both Hives and Urticaria differently. I am just a bit wary that the range is the same given the method that is used.
This article shows how they come up with the range https://moz.com/blog/sweating-details-google-keyword-tool-volume
Given Keyword planner (Australia data - see image) gives very different month usage rates - I would expect the range to be different.

In one well known Seo tool that I might or might not use i've got:
UK
27,000 for urticaria and 47,000 for hives
US
90,500 for urticaria and 165,000 for Hives. Then the mighty Moz estimates: 70,0000-118,000 for urticaria and for 300k-1.5m for hives.
But only medics will search urticaria - and they'll search it alot and be looking for academic articles and Hives is not a really solid commercial intent keyword - hence the huge numbers.
Google doesn't consider them the same thing - if you type in urticaria, hives is not in bold in the metas and similarly the other way around. So put Hives (urticaria) as your H1 and then have H2's as all the subtopics, causes, treatments, procedure, cremes, risks, children, and then an faq with all the questions people ask 'how to get rid of hives' i get hives when sunbathing' etc and you'll rank on page one if it's a comprehensive and authoritative piece. Don't worry about WebMD, government sites etc. They are not written by medics so you can outrank them with better and more detailed and more clinically helpful information.
Also think of the things peopl will type if they want to see a doctor about hives or buy hives products. These intents will be different too.
hope it helps! I've assumed a lot here. But don't worry too much about volume estimations. Bigger volumes are diluted with crap so you'll just get lots of traffic and no sales and smaller, more intent focussed ones are where the money's at. And if you get in the top 3 and answer some questions really well then you'll get the snippet for sure.

Point of diminishing returns for keyword research?
Hey, something I've been thinking about lately is "where is the point of diminishing returns for keyword research detail?" I get that keyword research is important for finding out stuff like "people generally search for 'doctor' way more often than they search for 'licensed medical professional'", but what about after that? Is there much useful information to be found by sifting through spreadsheets of stats about "doctor" vs "dr" vs "doctors" vs "physician" vs "physicians" etc? Especially when Google seems to treat a lot of those as interchangable? Or another example: If a remodeling company did basements, do you think there's much to be gleaned from AdWords data comparing "basement remodeler", "basement remodelers", basement remodeling", "basement remodeling contractor", "basement remodeling contractors", "basement renovation", "basement renovations", "basement renovators", "finished basements", "basement finishers", "basement finishing", etc.? Should those variations be analyzed and each targeted by their own sets of pages and pieces of content (e.g. a blog post that specifically targets "basement remodeler" and a blog post that targets "basement finisher" and a third blog post that specifically targets "renovated basement") Or should the takeaway be "there aren't any combinations that people overwhelmingly prefer to use, so let's just make content about basements and topics relevant to basements. Keyword research complete."

Focus Keyword
Hi everyone! I am pretty new to SEO so all the help would be great. Does every webpage on our website need a focus keyword for example like the about us page. We have webpages for every location in the UK - Would it be helpful if the location webpages had a focus keyword also? Just to note that I am using Yoast on Wordpress. Many thanks,

Improving the keyword ranking of a subject that we deal with only one or two months of the year
So I run a tip site based on the popular video game series Madden NFL. We also do NCAA and since I started getting invested in SEO, I noticed we aren't even in the top 50 for a lot of these results. What would be a good way to get started? Just throwing in some keywords that I want to be targeted?

How to choose a Keyword
I searched around for this answer first but got information overload. I write a photography blog and tonight I will put up a post of photography from around Jiyugaoka Train Station. I will probably call the post Around Jiyugaoka Station or Around Jiyugaoka or something like that. I like in Jiyugaoka (a part of Tokyo) so I have other posts that I have keyworded for Jiyugaoka. What is the best way to determine what is the best derivative of 'Jiyugaoka Station' to choose for the best traffic? I assume I could enter them in to manually into the Keyword Analysis but is there is easier way that would give recommendations?

Keyword and Keyphrases
I'm looking to optimise my website for some keywords and keyphrases I'm getting a bit confused on how different pages might compete (or help) each other. As we are an automotive dealer I was thinking about building the hompage around 4 keywords (one for each franchise we represent e.g 'Ford'). These show high local monthly searches and medium competition for just the manufacturer name on its own. Then if someone drills down into a franchise homepage (linked from our homepage e.g. www.ourwebsite.com/ford) I was thinking to optimise the page around e.g. 'Ford Dealer' (which has medium local monthly searches and high competition). Then if someone drills down into a particular model I optimise around that and so on. Question is will I be playing the franchise homepage vs the group homepage (Ford vs Ford Dealer) as I have read here on Keyword Cannibalization? Or will it work together? Alternative I guess is not to focus around a franchise on the group homepage and then only focus on the franchise from the franchise homepage onwards but I feel I would be missing a trick? As a new kid on the block help will be most appreciated.

Get search volume for 200 + keywords via API?
I have a list of about 500 keywords, and I want to know the search volume for each one, such that I can select a list of 200 keywords with the most search volume. If I have all my keywords in SEOMoz (or in an excel file), is there a way to run this as a batch request instead of using the SEOMoz keyword research tool to test each one one-by-one? If this is going to require a dev to work on it, any estimates on how many hours this would take a backend dev to put in place would be appreciated!

Keywords for homepage and product categories
My homepage explains the different electrical equipment our company sells, our main product category page also does the same but in more detail. I'm stuck where I feel the homepage and product category page need to be optimised for the same keyword except the homepage needs to be optimised for our company name too. Was anyone else in the same situation as me and how did you choose the right keyword between two pages that have the same message?
