Should you shorten very long URLs?
-
Hi Moz Community!
If the nav architecture URL is long, like this:
can I and should I shorten that new destination URL to make it easy for Google to see that the page topic is really the owl, like this:
https://savewildlife.org/endangered-species-list/mexican-spotted-owl
Thank you! Jane

That is a long URL, but I don't think shortening it will help in terms of SEO. Google is generally good at understanding the structure of your site without the structure of URLs. They are also good at determining the topic without the use of the URL. In my experience, the work from changing the URL is more than it would help.
If you find a reason to change the URL structure in the future that is very necessary (new CMS as an example), update the structure then. Until then, unless you are getting feedback from your users that it is annoying them, I'd leave them as is.

It’s easier than you might expect to set up custom shortened URLs for your brand. Though it might be an extra step to run your links through a link shortener, there are many benefits associated with the practice, including tracking and making URLs easy to remember.

Hi Jane!
There is no correct answer here. In the examples you gave there is a big difference between them: The number of folders.
4 folders vs just 1.The are some miths and some experiments stating that both long and short URLs rank really good.
In my opinion, I'd go for a middle in those two: 2-3 folders with less words each folders. You should focus in the experience you are providing the user and if each of those folders represent a section in your site.
This is just a wild guess:
yoursite.com/conservation/endangered-species/birds/mexican-spotted-owl
It looks like /endangered-species-act-protections/ and /endangered-species-list/ are the same category/folder. I'd remove the latter.Hope it helps.
Best luck.

URL Too Long vs. 301 Redirect
We have a small number of content pages where the urls paths were setup before we started looking really hard at SEO. The paths are longer than recommended (but not super crazy IMHO) and some of the pages get a decent amount of traffic. Moz suggests updating the URLs to make them shorter but I wonder if anyone has experience with the tradeoffs here. Is it better to mark those issues to be ignored and just use good URLs going forward or would you suggest updating the URLs to something shorter and implementing a 301 redirect?

How and When Should I use Canonical Url Tags?
Pretty new to the SEO universe. But I have not used any canonical tags, just because there is not definitive source explaining exactly when and why you should use them??? Am I the only one who feels this way?

example.com/webpage.html Were now linking to
example.com/webpage.html/ Urls in the xml sitemap remained unchanged (no trailing slash). We started noticing duplicate content (because our site renders the same page with or without the trailing shash). We corrected the problematic php url function so that now, all links on the site link to a url without trailing slash. However, Google had time to index these pages. Is implementing 301 redirects required in this case?1 -
How long should you wait between submitting link removal requests?
I'm in the process of trying to clear up a spammy link profile for a site I'm working on. I'm using the excellent data from MOZ and the list of links from Google Webmaster Tools to come up with a list of sites and Remove'em to manage the process and before I go to Google I want to make sure the file I am going to submit for the disavow process is as strong as possible. I am aware that I need to contact webmasters about three times to do the removal request properly. How long between requests should there be and how long should I wait between submitting a final removal request and submitting the file to the disavow tool? Any advice welcome. Thanks.

Does Gemvara really change URL when you customize the ring?
Hi, I was looking at Gemvara.com which is supposed to be a really great e-commerce site (including SEO wise) and I noticed it changes url as you customize the ring (see product page example). Do they really change the URL? (I don't see page refresh) Is it recommended to do so? (for e-commerce sites whenever you change shirt color, customize a computer etc.) Thanks

Subdirectory URLs
If I have category pages for my site; is it better to use http://example.com/category/category or just http://example.com/category? Also, I'm creating a new section of the site; a resource center. Should the URLs of the pages in the resource center be http://example.com/learn/page or just http://example.com/page What are the reasons for the better choice?

Is My Competitor Beating Me With A Better URL Structure?
A competitor is consistently beating my website on non-competitive, long tail keywords. His DA is 32 compared to my 46. His average PA is 23 to my 28. His average On Page Optimization Grade is a C compared to my A. His page speed score using YSlow is a 71 compared to my 78. The only thing I can think of at this point is that he has a better URL structure. We both have the keyword in the URL, but his structure goes like this (keyword: apw wyott parts): www.competitor.com/apw-wyott/parts While mine goes like this (I had nothing to do with this site's architecture; this is what I'm stuck with for the time being): http://www.etundra.com/APW_Wyott_Parts-C347.html It should be noted that the last word in these keywords is always the same - "parts." These keywords are for parts by different manufacturers so they follow a consistent pattern: [manufacturer-name] followed by "parts." Also, the "C347" on the end of my URL is the category number given to this particular category of products in our database. Are his URLs beating me or should I continue to look for other factors? If so, what other factors should I consider?
