Why did our site drop in Google rankings?
-
My site's URL (web address) is: http://tinyurl.com/3svn2l9
Hi there,
We operate a travel site that lists numerous tours, accommodation and activities. Since 6th August 2011 we have dropped from top 10 SERP rankings of our pages to around result number 100 (page 10) and losing massive amount of visitors via Google Search. Our Yahoo and Bing rankings are still in the top10. We need your advice and quick!
The last changes we have made are the following:
-redirected the non-www version to the www version on the 1st August -bought advertising with a follow link in a sidebar that is being populated across the site (+4000 pages) about 2 months ago -added a blog to the website 2 weeks ago and posted 2 posts to date.
Additionally, our website structure allows visitors (and bots) to see the same listings via different URLs which caused duplicate content. This has been the case since the launch of our website about 1 year ago. To prevent this duplicate content we have placed canonical tags on the individual listings pages.
Why did our site all of a sudden plummet in the rankings?

Basically that wouldn't affect anything, I do that myself all the time. But if I were the guy at Google, who has to manually reconsider your request to drop a penalty and I read "SEO company" in the footer section I wouldn't be too generous with your request. That is more or less a "psychological" factor, so I would rather call that link: Webdesign & Consulting: biggestleaf.
But that is no proven factor, just my 2 cents to how I think somebody at GooglePlex could react..

akaigotchi, can you please share your specific concern with the footer link for the SEO company?
It is a common practice for web designers, software companies and SEO companies to offer a footer link. Why would you suggest that link would negatively affect a site's rankings? Why would you suggest that the link might be suspicious in any manner?
-
Something odd, that might or might not have decreased your rankings: Mentioning a SEO company in the footer section If I were you I'd remove that just to make sure, you don't arouse too much suspicion, whenever you file a Google WMT reconsideration request, as Ryan pointed out correctly.
Other than that I totally agree with Ryan and Bix.

bought advertising with a follow link
Advertisements are not an endorsement of your site and should not be offered with a follow link. It's cheating, and this may have given your site a boost in rankings which has now been corrected. Or worse, you may have been penalized for this activity.
Your non-www re-direct seems to be working fine so that is not an issue. Adding a blog to your site would not be an issue either. Canonicalizing your pages as you described is a good step as well.
It sounds like you have a lot of changes going on at the same time which makes it harder to diagnose problems, but based on what you shared the advertisements is the only issue which should be corrected. After you fix the problem, use your Google WMT reconsideration request to determine if your site is under a penalty. Do not perform this step until you have resolved the advertising issue.

I've had a look at your backlink profile and it doesn't look very natural. The great majority of the links to your site have the exact same anchor text: 'victoria falls accomodation'. This may have tripped a spam filter, resulting in your getting a Google penalty. The precipitous nature of your decline further points to being penalized by Google.
You need to look at your backlink profile (use Open Site Explorer) and see if there are any real editorial links in there. If there aren't, and those sites are mostly paid links, that goes a long way to explaining why you've dropped (the advertising with the 'dofollow' links will look rather similar to linkspam).

My Ave. position and ranking is dropping!
Hi, I added canonicals last two days, and made a tiny change is our meta titles. (adding a secondary keyword). Now my ave. position and visibility has dropped very much. Can it be canonicals or is it the keywords? Can canonicals affect the website so quickly? My other question is can it be temporarily so should I wait more? how long? I should mention that our website content is not really good and I'm working on it. When I added meta tags we had a big jump in our ranking and then we stopped getting better,. But now we are going down! Can it be the content? Sorry I know that it is actually all, but i do not know which one matters more and do not understand why it happened immediately after adding canonicals. Our website is: www.pacificsmoke.com Appreciate your advice.

"Cookies are required to access this site" in Google Serp?
One of my clients is having an issue where their Google search result title and description are just showing "Cookies are required to access this site." instead of the actual meta values. The problem is only in Google as Yahoo and Bing seem to be fine. You can see in the image below or by running a search your self for "be well bodyworks longmont" I've never seen anything like it and couldn't find any reference to anyone else having this issue... I would very much appreciate any insight as to what is going on. Thanks! c5PGL

Sudden drop in Rankings after 301 redirect
Greetings to Moz Community. Couple of months back, I have redirected my old blog to a new URL with 301 redirect because of spammy links pointed to my old blog. I have transfer all the posts manually, changed the permalink structure and 301 redirected every individual URL. All the ranking were boosted within couple of weeks and regained the traffic. After a month I have observed, the links pointed to old site are showing up in Webmaster Tools for the new domain. I was shocked (no previous experience) and again Disavowed all links. Today, all the positions went down for new domain. My questions are: 1. Did the Disavow tool worked this time with new domain? All the links pointed to old domain were devaluated? Is this the reason for ranking drop? Or 2. 301 Old domain with Unnatural links causes the issue? 3. Removing 301 will help to regain few keyword positions? I'm taking this as a case study. Already removed the 301 redirect. Looking for solid discussion.Thanks.

Mobile site not ranking
Hello, Our main site ranks well for all the keyword terms, and yet, our mobile site is buried. It is a "m." configuration, and I am wondering if it is a question of not using the correct programming language to get it there? Or if the redirects to the main site should relate differently? I have tried to read up on the topic of mobile site SEO and cannot find (or understand) the answer? Could someone please help? Thanks so much in advance!

Why did I drop ranking after setting up perm redirect, sitemap, and Google places??
I have a site that was ranking in the top two for my search terms. We had a funky url (it contained hyphens) and was advised to change it for SEO, so I setup a perm redirect through my web host (before it was a temporary one I think) At the same time I installed a sitemap plugin for Wordpress and also registered for a Google Places account. I can't remember the exact order I did this -- does it matter? Anyway, within a couple days of doing the above, my ranking dropped to the bottom of the second page. I would like to fix this, but I'm not sure. I need help please!

Can leaving up old web pages no longer accessible through my site navigation hurt my rankings?
My firm recently overhauled a client's website. As part of the project, we gave the content a new structure, eliminating certain pages and creating several new ones. However, I just found out that some of the "old" pages (the ones we supposedly eliminated) still appear in the Google SERPs. Somehow, the client - who handled the coding - let these pages remain live even though they can no longer be accessed through the site navigation. This seems like something that could hurt the client's SEO rankings, but I want to make sure before contacting the client and suggesting they take down the old pages. Can anyone confirm my suspicion?
