What would be causing our linking domains and inbound links to decline?
-
I am noticing a decline in the number of our linking domains and inbound links from month to month. It isn't drastic but looking like a trend. Any reason why this would happen? I'm not sure where to start. Thanks!
-
A tool like MOZ or SEMRush will show you where the backlinks were pointing or you may notice a difference in the page rank or traffic to a page if it lost a valuable link.
If the links all look to be of low quality I wouldnt worry to much if you have a good overall link profile. But I would keep monitoring to make sure it is not a trend that is going to continue.

The above link may also help. You may need to add a secondary dimension of landing page. Sorry brain not working quite right its been a long day.

Thank you! This is helpful. I'm new to tracking this so I'm not quite sure where to gather all of this information. I found the "lost" links and the websites don't seem to be very high quality so I'm not too worried, however I'm having trouble finding the content they linked to. Any tips?
-
There is something called "link rot"... that every site experiences. You earn some links a long time ago and most of those links will eventually disappear for reasons described by effectdigital. If your new content production pace is not as fast as in the past, then you can be losing more links than you are earning. Link rot hits sites that are slacking on their content production.
And, as Mr Whippy said... "The domain linking to you is clearing out links that point to your content as they feel there is better content to link to now." Sometimes competitors will see your content, produce something much better, then solicit the linking websites to link to their content that is now much better than yours. We receive lots of emails suggesting better destinations for links in existing articles. These email messages can be valuable to a webmaster, but if we look at their suggested content and it is crap, we filter their email address to trash.

Without seeing the data it is hard to say.
If you have a few years of data take a look back and see what fluctuations you have had previously.
Also, check the pages that the links were pointing to on your site make sure they haven't been removed.
If its a small number of links compared to your overall backlink profile then I wouldn't worry to much if its a big percentage of your overall backlink profile then I would be digging into it to see if you can stop it.
Is there any pattern to the links as I asked in my first response? are they all from one type of site? do they all link to old content?
-
Thank you both! So at what point do you think it's important to investigate to find the cause? And when do you think it's normal fluctuations?
-
This is a really good answer.
OP also needs to check the data they are looking at. Is it link growth data, or actual static link data? Some charts make it look as if your links are disappearing, when what they are really saying is less domains are 'creating' links to you over time (aka your link growth is slowing)
If OP is sure that their actual links are shrinking over time, Steve gave great answers
Here are some others:
- People re-designing their websites and streamlining their content, some links get removed as some old content (which may contain links) doesn't make it onto the new site
- People killing their own content even if it's not part of a re-design, removing old blog posts etc (which may contain links)
- People un-linking their internal links to insulate their own PageRank better, which leaves you with un-linked citations
- People adding no-follows to their links. These links should still be detected, but they won't count to your SEO any more
- People blocking the indexation of content that contains links (e.g: putting Meta no-index and / or robots.txt blocks on blog posts which contain links) as a risk nullification measure
- People moving their site from one domain to another. The new links from the new site should be found eventually, but often there's a trough where a backlink tool will see the old site is gone but it won't have found the new site yet!
- More people opting out of having their site crawled by backlink data suppliers (e.g: blocking rogerbot, Moz's crawler in robots.txt)
-
There could be any number of reasons for this.
The domains linking to you are clearing up old content and removing it from their site if they no longer see it as valid or valuable.
The domain linking to you is clearing out links that point to your content as they feel there is better content to link to now.
Old domains disappearing off the web completely
For a more specific answer you will need to provide us with more info, such as how old are the links, are they all from one type of websites such as directories or blog sites

When I click an outgoing link from Analytics - why are they all broken?
On one of my websites, if I visit the Behavior > Site Content section of Anayltics any link I try to open is broken. Google Analytics is appending the domain before every URL causing it to open in a popup but as a broken link. Example: Trying to click a link to a page on the website at this URL: http://www.thisisanexample.com/test.html But in the Analytics popup browser this is what it tries to load: www.thisisanexample.comhttp://www.thisisanexample.com/test.html So I can't preview any of the content within Google Analytics. I feel like this is a settings issue somewhere... Any ideas?

Suspect Links from Yeusaigon.net Causing Server Errors
Good morning, Webmaster Tools is reporting an increase in server errors on our site due to some very suspect links from Yeusaigon.net. After taking a quick look, it appears they are some form of search engine attempting to link to our images by using incomplete URLs. For example: http://yeusaigon.net/search/images.php?q=htc%20one%20max%20phone%20cases&page=1044 Is linking to: http://www.mobilemadhouse.co.uk/caseflex-htc-one-max-real-leather-flip... As this URL is incomplete, it's throwing up a server error. There are currently 139 instances of there errors from the same domain, and is increasing by around 5-10 per day. The domain, however, is linking to some of our pages/images correctly, but I fear Google may look at these as spammy links - they certainly look that way! So, what can we do? I can't find any contact details on Yeusaigon website so I have disavowed the entire domain. Is this the right thing to do? How do I stop the ever-increasing number of sever errors due to incorrect URLs? Cheers, Lewis

How can you tell if Google has already assessed a penalty against your site for spammy links?
Is there any way to tell for sure if there is a penalty? My client has a ton of low quality back links, and I think they are in danger of a Penguin penalty. Any way to know? The links are there for a business reason.... their clients mention them in the footer, with a backlink. It is not a link scheme. but folks are generally not clicking on a footer link, and so there is a pro/con of leaving it as it. Any way, to diagnose whether a Penguin penalty has already hit?

Cross Domain Tracking in GA (without cross domain links)
Hi everyone, Been doing some research about cross-domain tracking in Google Analytics (preferably Universal Analytics where documentation is a bit spare). All of the tutorials focus on the auto-linking and ensuring links to the other site are taken care of. I'm considering a site that may not cross-link like that at all (or it may, but won't be the main avenue). A good example is: www.gap.com
Reporting & Analytics | | ketanmv
www.bananarepublic.com
www.oldnavy.com Now, they do link to the other brands in their navigation but let's pretend that they don't necessarily do that. Gap Corporate may want to roll up all these domains into a single reporting profile because customers can clearly visit any of those sites on their own and buy. It would be nice to know that Visitor X bought 2 items from gap.com and 3 from oldnavy.com... and of course, here were their campaigns, etc. From what I am reading, I am not sure this is really possible. It seems that the cross-domain code is really only best for when my main site links to another domain for checkout or something. But in my example, we are definitely not in control of that kind of behavior. Thoughts? Perhaps I need to recommend they go with subdomains only which Universal GA seems to handle quite fine out of the box. Thank you!0 -
GA profile when migration domains
I'm migrating a .co.uk domain to .com and am trying to decide if I should reuse the same Google Profile (if I can?) or create a new one. If I choose to reuse the same profile so it has historical data, does anyone know if it's just a matter of keeping the same UA profile identifier in place on the page? Or do I have to change anything on the actual profile in GA as well to say "start pulling data from .com now"?

How to link Analytics to Webmaster Tools at the profile level?
What do you do when you have a few profiles under one property in analytics (for subdomains etc) but you want to link each one of them to webmaster tools? Far as I know, you can only link them at the property level. Thanks! -Dan

How to locate a back link
GWT says that a large popular site with DA 70 has a link to one of our recently published pages. Is it possible to find the location of that link using GWT? I don't think the SEOmoz tools can find it, perhaps because our page is too new. Best,

Phantom urls causing 404
I have a very strange problem. When I run SEOmoz diagnostics on my site, it reveals urls that I never created. It seems to combine two slugs into a new url. For example, I have created the pages http://www.naplesrealestatestars.com/abaco-bay-condos-naples/ and http://www.naplesrealestatestars.com/beachwalk-naples-florida/ and now the url http://www.naplesrealestatestars.com/abaco-bay-condos-naples/beachwalk-naples-florida/ exists in addition to the two I created. There are over 100 of these phantom urls and they all show a 404 error when clicked on or crawled by SEOmoz. Any body know how to correct this?
